It was hard enough for Mr. Popper to support himself, Mrs. Popper, Bill and Janie Popper. The addition of twelve penguins to the family made it impossible to make both ends meet. Then Mr. Popper had a splendid idea — the talented penguins would be a sensation on the stage. And so they were...

A delightful change of pace. I do wish I had an edition with the original illustrations, but the story is the main focus of what turned out to be a chapter book and not a picture book! Though I think if this were written today, the penguins names might be different, overall the story has a timeless sweetness to it. The majority of the happenstances are harmlessly unrealistic but I am glad it ended with the acknowledgement that the penguins 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 would be happier in colder climes and not in show business. 3mo

I‘ve been reading a lot of somber things lately and I needed something jovial. I keep some kids books from my parents‘ collection on my shelf. I hadn‘t read this before so I thought it would be a light reprieve. Overall, this was quite silly. I enjoyed how none of the side characters seemed to know what a penguin was at first. The illustrations were very charming. But yeah- it was dated, silly, implausible, simple. A classic kids book I suppose.

Mr. Popper adopts a couple penguins and ends up with a whole troupe of performers. This is very cute, even if it had a few parts that were unbelievable moments for the characters. My 7yo had several uncontrollable fits of laughter, so we had fun taking turns reading it to each other.

Turns out almost all the dialogue in the musical production of this that I was just in was taken straight from the text, which wasn't trippy at all for me. Mrs. Popper supremacy forever! #childrenslit #classics

Mr. Popper‘s Penguins is fun-filled, creative, and allows the reader to imagine what life would be like caring for a penguin. I would love to hang out with Mr. Popper. He seems like a pretty cool dude. Penguins in the fridge = awesome!

I rather enjoyed this book... more from seeing it through my son's (6) eyes than for the content itself. My adult perspective stole the magic from it and instead had me critiquing a marriage where the wife is fine with the husband leaving spontaneously for a couple of years, and worried about providing for the family financially in other portions. Based on my kiddos experience bet I would have enjoyed it more in my younger days.

I hadn't read this children's classic in many a year. It's fun and cute but quite implausible. Still, I can see the penguin antics appealing to younger readers, even if the story honestly doesn't make a lot of sense haha

Also, I got this copy as a library discard back in 1999, where it had been on the shelves since its publication in 1938!

TheAromaofBooks @TheBookHippie @Leftcoastzen - There is definitely an age that LOVES the silliness. As an adult, it's sometimes harder to get past the practical aspects (you just jumped on a boat and headed to the Arctic?!) but I remember reading this with my younger siblings and thinking it was hilarious. The illustrations by Robert Lawson also add a great deal of charm. 4y

I overcame my lifelong fear of birds for this week‘s episode of my podcast! (Even though — let‘s be honest — penguins are a very cute exception to my fear.) On Episode 105, author Swati Teerdhala joins me for a conversation about Newbery Honor-winning Mr. Popper‘s Penguins! We talk about the main character‘s wanderlust, cancel culture, and so much more. Link to listen in bio! 🐧❄️

Day 20 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - I keep forgetting about this little project, so it's been a few days!! Today's book is a battered copy of a classic children's story. It's a bit absurd, but SO much fun, and it's the kind of absurdity that makes children go off into piles of giggles. Lawson's illustrations add so much to the tale as well. It's not my favorite ending to a book, but it works & it's all good fun.

Hestapleton I LOVED this book!! The movie adaptation with Jim Carrey is pretty cute too :) 4y

A tale of two cities, of mice and men, treasure island, the sound and the fury, crime and punishment, 1984, a farewell to arms, catcher in the rye, pride and prejudice, great expectations, as I lay dying. Not too sure about the rest. #canyounamethefamousbooks

This HF Young Reader's Choice Award and Newbery Honor Winner is a tale about a family man, Mr. Popper. One day, while the family is listening to the radio, they hear from a mysterious adventurer who promises them a surprise. Soon they receive a penguin and name him Captain Cook. Captain Cook's health begins to fail so they get him a companion, a female penguin named Greta. Not long after the couple has 10 baby penguins and a lot of mouths to feed.

Kyleigh_J This novel is truly an enjoyable read as the Poppers' situation is very unique and hilarious so it is perfect for an RA. There is 20 chapters in the book, so the teacher could read one a day or one half a day. Scholastic has great activities to go with this book, including a great KWL chart about penguins that should be done prior to reading.

Mr. Popper‘s Penguins by Richard Atwater was published in 1938. The book is about a man, Mr.Popper, who has a strong interest in penguins and their environments. When he one day receives a penguin in the mail, he finds that he needs to make some changes to give them the cold life they need! Before you know it, he had 10 penguins in his home and he had to care for them all. He trained them and used them in a popular show throughout the community!

I thought it was funny how a penguin showed up to Mr. Popper's house in a large box. He keeps the penguin in the icebox refrigerator and drills holes in it so the penguin can breathe. He takes the penguin on walks on a leash and even to the barbershop. The penguin, Greta, was sent to live with Mr. Popper and Captain Crook so the two penguins are not as lonely.

This modern fantasy book contains eccentric characters and preposterous situations that make a story thought to be believable, quite interesting. It contains characters that live normal lives but with an added twist of a family of penguins inside someone's house. Gives off the idea that creativity is possible, even in our own lives that we live. It also has a very exciting plot that gives a firm background and attention to detail.
