Ruddy Gore: A Phryne Fisher Mystery | Kerry Greenwood

I fell asleep with 50 pages to go in this last night, so I didn‘t quite make my goal of two books for #slumpathon, but I did finish it today.

This is not my favorite book of the series so far. Phryne investigates two murders that occur during a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan‘s Ruddigore. Much of the play was explained in the story and made the plot felt overly complicated.

The Assassin's Song | M.G. Vassanji

Late last check-in for #slumpathon - I didn‘t get the tagged book finished but I did end up listening to The Great Gatsby and I also made some good progress on the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, in addition to finishing How To Give Up Plastic. Overall, I‘m feeling pretty good about how things went, I really immersed myself in books and ignored the news, which I desperately needed.

What I liked about this was that all the characters are so emotive. Jaigirdar writes relationship dynamics extremely well, so you don‘t end up only caring what will happen between 1 or 2 people but about lots of relationships, not all of which even involve the main characters.
This book handles a lot of heavy topics. I think the way they‘re woven into the plot is overt & heavy handed-they basically are the plot. But once she‘s jumped into them⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame Jaigirdar actually makes her points really subtlety, & I was very impressed at how impactful this has the potential to be.

This was my last read for #slumpathon I had such a great reading weekend! I can‘t thank you enough @Hestapleton for pushing me to jump back into some of my harder books, which, once I‘d actually done, left me feeling free to grab some really fun stuff like this as well. 4y

Reading Goals: Extended Readers for Basic Reading | Glenn McCracken, Charles Child Walcutt

3 books in 4 days- and I worked yesterday! I‘m pretty happy with this- especially since I‘ve been a news junkie for past few months- this #slumpathon really helped me read more and stress less thanks @Hestapleton ! This has been a great reading week. Now back to school.

The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West | David McCullough

Since I allowed this book three slots on my #BookSpinBingo board, I thought I would pause at the end of part 1 to share some fun facts so far - the Northwest Ordinance is an amazing document that set the stage for all of the US's post-colonial expansion west. At a time that slavery was legal in all 13 states, the Ordinance expressly banned it, while emphasizing the importance of education & freedom of religion. There was also a section promising⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) goodwill & a willingness to work with the native tribes of the region, although that didn't go so well. 😕 Legend says that the first tree cut down by the settlers at Marietta was a Buckeye & the trees in the region were so huge that it wasn't unusual for 5 or 6 men to be chopping down the SAME TREE AT THE SAME TIME. There is a record of one stump (a sycamore) that measured TWENTY-ONE FEET IN DIAMETER!

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) settlement were fascinated by the ancient earthworks they discovered in the region & went out of their way to make sure that they were preserved. The surveying methods for the Ohio territory set the state for surveying the entire rest of the country - prior to this, townships & county lines were marked any old which away, but in Ohio they established straight lines & consistent sizes for township blocks & how many townships in a ⬇ 4y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) county. I've always loved this - if you look at the counties in, say, Virginia or Massachusetts they're all squiggly lines, but if you look at Ohio (or anywhere west, really) you'll see straight edges and square corners.

Bigcountry15 I enjoyed The Pioneers as well. It gets more interesting as Mr. McCullough introduces us to some interesting characters and reveals the villainy of an early American statesman. Enjoy! 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Bigcountry15 - I really like how much of the story is being told using letters & diaries from the actual settlers themselves, although it also means that parts of the book don't flow very smoothly as he hops around from one person to another lol I live less than 2hrs away from Marietta, so I'm enjoying reading about places I've visited & seen in person. 4y

Bigcountry15 @TheAromaofBooks Personal letters and documents seem to be McCullough's primary sources for most of his work. I think it helps the history come alive. 4y

The Queen of Crime never fails me.

Deborah Green isn't a name I've been familiar with but it always amazes me to read about a woman who murders her children. Obviously suffering from mental illness but I do believe that Green knew exactly what she was doing and why. In Rule's book you get a terrifying account of Green's mental decline and how (I believe) this could have been avoided and her children spared.
