Panpan

This started as an interesting story of an angry man living through his brother‘s slow death from AIDS. The writing and tone is a bit manic and in your face, but once I adjusted to it, it worked. But what ruined it for me is the main character is deeply misogynistic without examination of this and it gets so thick by the end it was just bad.

Bailedbailed

It started out great, but by page 121 my desire to read was almost non-existent. #HailTheBail 🙌🏼

Aims42 This was one that I did finish but I should‘ve just bailed. Not my cup of tea 👎 3w
TheBookgeekFrau @Aims42 I'm glad I'm not alone in this! 😅 I just don't get all the love this book got 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego This was boring AF, but I think that was intentional to make the ending more impactful. It all kind of pops off at the end. But I didn't really find it worthwhile. And if I remember correctly, the epilogue pissed me off. 3w
TheBookgeekFrau @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego So boring!! What good is an impactful ending if you put your readers to sleep before they get there? 🤣 I couldn't even care about the characters who seemed like dust sheets draped over the furniture 3w
Aims42 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego UGH! The epilogue almost made me throw the book across the room! I remember thinking, “I finished it for this?!?!?” And being super mad too 🤣 3w
Aims42 @TheBookgeekFrau Definitely not alone 🩷 3w

#FoodandLit A little behind this month! I found a Bolivian restaurant about 40 min from me. I ordered beef saltenas, pupusas revuelitas and pork chicharron con yuca b/c they ate a lot of pork and yuca in the jungle. The book was good. Looking back it was a sad book after all the jungle adventures but I enjoyed it and was glad to see the main character‘s growth. Bolivia

+ Interesting how Napoleon's rise affected outcomes in the liberation of SA. England supported Bolivar to get rid of Spain's cruel colonialism until they needed Spain to get rid of Nap.
+Bol wanted freedom and equality for all, which is why his government could not mirror US
+He formed and named Bolivia
-Harvey was clearly biased. At least 3 x he called Bol a prima donna
-Why did I choose a bio from a Welsh dude instead of a bio written from a SA?

Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro was the illegitimate son of a very poor woman who became the ruler of #Peru by conquering the Incas. The Incas put up a good fight, and won many battles. But their territory continued to shrink as the Incas sought a place to live in the mountains. This book tells their story from the Spanish arrival and the death of the last Inca emperor. The book feels comprehensive but interesting. My only complaint ⬇️

Texreader is the author editorializing too much: he states as fact the Incas were benevolent rulers and theirs was a utopia. I think that goes too far. Just because the Spanish were so wrong in everything they did in colonizing the Americas, that doesn‘t mean the opposite (in essence a perfect society) is true of the colonized peoples. Setting that aside, it‘s an excellent history of the end of the Incas and Peru sounds so beautiful and bountiful. ⬇️ 2mo

#mentalhealthMonday

Everyday after dinner I study Spanish on Duolingo (451-day streak) for about 30 minutes, then I color while I listen to my audiobook (current audiobook is tagged). Then I‘ll switch to my ebook or my IRL book in bed before I go to sleep. I find having this routine helps me relax.

Kerrbearlib Love Duolingo! Thanks for sharing. 2mo

@Catsandbooks

Catsandbooks Amazing! 🇵🇪 3mo
Butterfinger He used the same fact in the book I read. I can't imagine 50 different taters. 3mo
Teresereading We Tasmanians are very specific about our potato breeds, but 5000 is extreme 😉 3mo
Texreader @Teresereading Yea...I can't even imagine! But now I'm curious about Tasmanian potatoes! 2mo
Texreader @Butterfinger It's a lot of taters! (Says Sam to Frodo!) 2mo
