Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: What do you like and not like about social reading, such as #readathons, #buddyreads, and book clubs? #BookTalk

DeeLew For me, they don‘t work well because they usually take place over the weekend and I work every other weekend. The weekends that I am off are the only days that my partner and I have time to hang out. My reading time is sporadic throughout the week so readathons aren‘t really convenient. 😢 1mo
Slajaunie I have not done social readings since college. 1mo
LibrarianRyan I don‘t like how many people don‘t finish the book in book clubs. 1mo
See All 13 Comments
ljuliel I think for me, I don‘t like the pressure when reading. I know no one will yell at me for not reading enough hours, but I put the pressure on myself. Any restrictions at all seem to make reading stressful. It‘d be fun if I could get over that issue.....( plus keep my wrinkly behind awake so I remember to turn off the timer) . I now probably have 39 hours because the timer‘s still on, but I only read for 6 of them. 🙄 1mo
SomedayAlmost I rarely read nonfiction, so groups that select those books often tend to bore me. I enjoy fiction book clubs, but tend to be the person recommending the darkest reads. I was in a “wine club with some reading” for a while and that was honest. And fun. (edited) 1mo
Lcsmcat I like buddy reads or read alongs for tackling books that I might not get to if I left it up to “someday.” And I like the deep discussions and alternative viewpoints I get. Other readers always see things differently. Sometimes I change how I see something, and sometimes I don‘t, but I still have a richer reading experience from discussing it with other serious readers. 1mo
BethM I love readathons bc it makes me feel like part of something bigger. I love buddy reads bc they‘ve encouraged me to read books I otherwise wouldn‘t have found and/or motivated me to finish chunksters. Plus if it‘s not my type of book there‘s no pressure to join. I tend to dislike IRL book clubs bc mine tends toward myster/thriller and mainstream fiction- none of which I generally enjoy. And my tastes are too “eclectic” for them. (edited) 1mo
Bklover I love them! I love the friendship and camaraderie and having someone to talk to about the book. Having said that I always fall behind and I‘m terrible at achieving goals. But......it gives me something to strive for! 😉 1mo
cherinium I have never done a readathon. They've never been at convenient times, but I also don't think I'd enjoy being glued to social media for the posts and games. Buddy reads are ok, but my reading pace doesn't usually match up with others. I've also never done IRL book club, because....interaction with people! (Although, I guess Bible studies would count, and I've done plenty of those!) 1mo
Angeles I don‘t mind book clubs because I like discussing books but I don‘t get readathons or book challenges. They seem a case of quantity over quality. Also I read for pleasure, there is enough challenge in my life that I don‘t need to go searching for it 1mo
rubyslippersreads What @Lcsmcat said about buddy reads, what @ljuliel said about readathons, and what @Bklover said about both. 😊 1mo
rwmg I love my real life book club. We take it in turns to choose books and I get to read excellent books I probably would never have looked at by myself. It's also a good way of keeping in touch with people who have moved away and who Skype in.

I enjoy the readathons because I don't take them too seriously. It's an excuse to spend as much of the weekend reading as possible but if it doesn't work out, [shrug].

Just signed up for #nfnov - a #nonfictionnovember challenge hosted by @rsteve388 and @Clwojick - see Cassandra‘s page for the sign-up link.

Hoping to get through one or more of these! (So will probably read something totally different 😁)

Soubhiville “So I will probably read something different 🤣”. I hope you choose something you really enjoy. 2mo
RachelO @Soubhiville That‘s pretty much how it works 🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂 Thank you! 😘 2mo
Chrissyreadit I love it! Can‘t wait to see your choice! 2mo

Clwojick SOooo relatable. I never stick to a set schedule or stack. 2mo
squirrelbrain I also have H is for Hawk and going to sign up for #nfnov, if you fancy a buddy read.... 2mo
RachelO @squirrelbrain I would love to! But in all honesty I‘m a calamitous buddy-reader (and bookclub reader and challenge reader) at the moment - I‘m just not getting through things in the right order 😕, then it gets stressful and I read even less, and it gets more stressful 🙄🙄🙄. Sorry! Hopefully I‘ll get on top of things for new year and be up for All The Things all over again! Thanks for the suggestion though 😘😘😘 2mo
squirrelbrain Don‘t worry @RachelO - I don‘t want to be the cause of any more stress! 😬 Anyway, I‘m rubbish at #buddyreads too - I speedread and then I‘ve forgotten it all when it‘s time to discuss! 😁 2mo
ljuliel I was just reading through some of the posts for the nonfiction month coming up, and was glad to see I‘m not alone when it comes to buddy reads, read alongs readathons , challenges, etc. It‘s weird, but they actually cause me to read less. I think it‘s because I have a hard time putting my reading on a timetable. It stresses me out to stay on task. I‘m not sure why. 🧐 1mo
RachelO @ljuliel Exactly that! That rebellious streak! As soon as I *have* to do anything, it becomes less appealing, much more difficult and ooh look at all the other things. Ridiculous, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Hope you‘ve found some good ideas for #nfnov 1mo
ljuliel Thanks. It‘s funny 😂 but I haven‘t even looked up an actual list of books yet. I can‘t even do that ahead of time. I read a lot of NF anyhow so it‘ll be easy to choose but it also bugs me to have a particular stack staring me in the face. Weird I know ....... Good luck to you too. 👍🏼 1mo
RachelO @ljuliel Sooooo familiar 😂🤣😂 1mo

EadieB @MrT Yes! And more! 5mo
Tove_Reads Looks good! Don‘t forget Quentins. 5mo
gradcat @EadieB Are we Reading any more Cara Black books? I‘ve got about ten pages left on the first one, and I really enjoyed it! You‘ve sure got a big stack TBR there...loads of great ones! 📚👍😊 5mo
EadieB @gradcat We usually read the next book by an author around the same time in the month so probably the end of August for Cara Black but if you are a slow reader, you can start earlier. I have to order the next one from the library that‘s why it‘s not in this pile. @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 5mo
EadieB @Tove_Reads Thanks! Forgot what book was next. I‘ll have to order it from library. 5mo
gradcat @EadieB Thanks Eadie...that‘ll be perfect! I appreciate you helping me keep up—I feel like I‘m out of touch because I‘m missing things. ♥️ 5mo
Andrew65 @EadieB I can get hold of book 2 as an audiobook whilst we are away from home. @gradcat @Tove_Reads (edited) 5mo
EadieB @Andrew65 ok Sounds good! 5mo

The Aftermath | Rhidian Brook

Pickpick

#RhidianRead #buddyread
The author‘s inspiration for the novel is his grandfather who requisitioned a house for his family in 1946 Hamburg. In a unique move,he allowed the German owners‘ to remain & share the house. The novel‘s intrigue, it‘s vivid, sensory, details of ruins juxtaposed with splendor, it‘s tensions between the “occupiers”& those who lost, are palpable. The culture of the orphaned “children of rubble”is heartbreaking in it‘s detail.

Cathythoughts Great review & Love the cover ♥️ (edited) 9mo

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I don‘t mind switching up our months. Let‘s do it for Feb and hold Unmentionable till March! I need something meaty right now. Oops—I forgot we already pushed that off. I can do both the David Litt and Color in Feb also! (edited) 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @mreads I know! I love her, well really their, writing....I want to read the finale so bad, but yet I don‘t want it to be over! (edited) 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Ok, whatever works best. I was really surprised, when I put it on hold, I thought I‘ll be lucky if I get it before April, but a bunch of people on the hold list must have passed on it for now. 10mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Best kind of surprise!! 10mo
LeahBergen Cold Comfort Farm 👍🏻 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Very true, better early than very late. 10mo
Gezemice Well, I just read three from your list... since we are in two of the same reading clubs... and onto the fourth one (Well of Ascension). Cold Comfort Farm is also awesome! 10mo
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage You want to read Unmentionable? I really want to read it! Can I join? (edited) 10mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice Yes—That would be great!! 10mo
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage In March? I need to put in my hold... 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice yep March! And sure you can! If your library hold looks like it‘s going to take longer, just let us know and we‘ll switch it to April. 10mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Maybe as we pick each book for the next month we should post a general, we are reading “this” next month if anyone is interested in joining us? 10mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds fun—the more the merrier! 10mo
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks! It looks like it is already pending... even though it told me there were multiple holds. Well, not complaining! I am ready to go whenever! 10mo
