It's not a bad book for what it is, but this should never have made the #Booker longlist. The world is going nuts and there are tons of books out there telling relevant stories about our times, with urgent narrative voices and interesting aesthetic concepts - and the Booker judges nominate escapist entertainment with kitsch elements instead of #TimWinton or #TommyOrange. This. Book. Wow. Tommy Orange crafted a compelling group of characters whose lives intersect in ways both large and small. I was entranced, both by moments of growth and joy and by the feeling that the narrative was heading in a direction that could not be reversed. Lovely and haunting and thought provoking.
