Hey Littens!

6 sci-fi short stories just dropped on Amazon, called The Far Reaches collection ($0.99 each!). This is a collab of some powerhouse authors in current sci-if; including Nnedi Okorafor, Rebecca Roanhorse, and James S.A. Corey, to name my favourite few 😍🪐🦾

Is there a way to add books for tagging, if they aren‘t in the database yet? 🙏

#scifi #shortstories #fiction #okorafor #nnediokorafor #roanhorse #rebeccaroanhorse #litsyhelp

bthegood yes you can add books to database - search for the book, under nothing found there will be a place to click which allows you to add a book (this is on the computer, not sure if it's available on the app) - 👍 1y

There There: A novel | Tommy Orange
post image

This novel is one of the great loves of my life. It reads straight through, with lots of characters, and my new favourite activity is to reread chapters at random. The chapters work as their own short stories and part of a whole all at once.

Plus, I MET THE AUTHOR THIS YEAR AND HE WAS SOOOOO COOOOOOOL 😍🥰🥰🥰 10/10 would hang out for a long chat, and he gave superb book and podcast recommendations ❤️

Heart Berries: A Memoir | Terese Mailhot

“Crafting the truth to be as bare as it feels was important…. Memoir, for me, functions as something vulnerable in a sea of posturing.”

Her skill is incredible, I‘m floored. Reading the afterward is at least as good as the rest of the memoir. The volume appears short, at 142 pages, and it took weeks to read. Her questions open a lot of doors, and none are easily answered.

Who else has read anything by this delightful author???

I picked the most worn paperback I could find at the library, and it was just published in 2015?? I‘ll never be the same! Character relationship-centric writing across galaxies and many forms of sentience. I cannot WAIT to read the next one 😍🎯🦾

(And hello again after a school-induced interlude!! Nice to see everyone and all their thoughts and reads 🤗)

TieDyeDude I have only read her novella To Be Taught, if Fortunate, but it was excellent and I definitely plan on reading more! 2y
MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward @TieDyeDude ooooooo I just picked that one up! So excited!! “To Be Taught” was the only one of her titles available at the library without a hilariously long hold line 😂 Bring onnnnnn the space age 🦾 2y

MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward @DisneyFan I was completely unable to finish this within a weekend! There was so much to reflect on, I had to take time to just absorb between chapters, sometimes between sentences. Such an amazing book, now I understand why (and am 5x happier) this had such a long waitlist at the library. (I purchased a copy after waiting 6months on the “hold” list- couldn‘t wait any more hahaha) 2y

For an outstanding series, this one still sits apart from the rest. So many significant plot lines, a character set that grows and changes with eachother in complex (and sometimes terrifying) ways, and COOL SPACE SCIENCE.

The show on Amazon follows up to book 6, but there‘s a whole ‘nother trilogy after that 😉

Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person to be a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, fought for the rights of girls to pursue education in Pakistan. She continues to advocate for change in the treatment of women, refugees and marginalized persons throughout the world.
This book is by the father of this amazing woman, as he reflects on the time raising her and her brothers. I‘ve never cried so hard in a prologue.

This is an amazing set of essays, and a very unique perspective of journeys. Rethinking care, how we interact and the way we stigmatize mental care and living with mental illness is brought out in all its dirty linens to sit on the examination table.
Love this. I only wish there were more of these essays to read.

“How much mental illness is acceptable,
And how much is going to be too much?”

So dark. And rich. And vulnerable. Usually, a library audiobook is returned immediately, so others can enjoy it. This time, I‘ll be quietly, numbly thinking about everything I just listened to for the next 6 hours before I have to listen to it all again.

Not… not for the lighthearted. Happy reading.

“Here‘s why I‘m afraid of life after death;

This set of essays is definitely for the shadows of the darker side of humor. Trigger warning doesn‘t even begin to cover it, and the sass has me laughing in ways I never thought I could. The stories are very different, but this reminds me of reading Running With Scissors the first time.

This is clever, hilarious and resounding.

Doughty picks apart what has culturally become a very taboo subject in the US- death and how we deal with the dead. She opens many closed doors, and makes jokes about all of our mortality; especially the fact that so many of us never truly contemplate it.

Love this. Hard conversations only, please.

This story of subterfuge and political prison during WW2 is a perspective that borders on witty and charming. Not at all what I expect when reading about accounts of that war. These womens‘ clever, bawdy, deeply ironic humor had me dark-laughing time and again.

This was an excellent set of short stories. Each one was its own variety of thought-provoking.

A couple great quotes:
"One of my earliest memories is a feeling of incredulity at how many people there are in the world."
"The number of people with the levels of passion it takes to become a ghost are decreasing every year."

Enoki, the short told from the point of view of a once-worshipped tree, was an easy favorite

There are a few books that I keep having to replace on my bookshelf. I can't stop sharing them!

My personal copy is always battered, creased and sometimes slightly boughed.
The book, the thoughts of the author, become a place of comfort, even in the moments where the characters aren't particularly comfortable.

This is one of those books. A summary does it no justice.
