«Було так легко зникнути, так легко заперечити все, так легко — у димі й тумані великого міста — приховати що завгодно.»

“It was so easy to disappear, so easy to deny knowledge, so easy in the smoke and fog of a great city to mask everything.”
— Erik Larson, The Devil in the White City

I know I am like 10+ years behind on this, but it lived up to the hype.

Texreader I agree. An excellent book 7mo
dabbe You're in good company; I just read it a couple of years ago, and it had been on my shelf for YEARS. A riveting read! 🤩😂🤗 7mo

This book is really two separate novels about the same time period in the same city. This is the only connection between the architects of The 1893 World‘s Fair and the serial killer H.H. Holmes. The book is well researched. The chapters on Holmes were intriguing. The chapters on The World‘s Fair were tedious but informative. I started out reading linearly, but eventually read it as two books. Anyone interested in Chicago history will love it.

I thought this book was fascinating. It tells the true story of the creation of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago as well as the story of the serial killer H H Holmes and how he used the Fair to attract more victims.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 8mo
Lcsmcat When my book club read this I was fascinated by how we divided into those who liked the crime part best and those who liked the fair. No one liked both parts equally. 8mo
julieclair I really enjoyed this one when I read it several years ago. And @Lcsmcat I was definitely in the pro-fair group. 🎡 8mo

I found this easier to follow on 🎧audio than physical. Information dense but very interesting. Pictures would have made a wonderful edition📸

I look forward to following this up with a few others from this time period🤓📚

CoverToCoverGirl I have that one on one of my shelves somewhere. I really like his writing. He is an amazing non-fiction writer IMO. I really loved 10mo
DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl I‘ll have to look into more of his books🤓 Thanks! 10mo

Interesting contrast between the story of a successful world fair and the life of the first serial killer of America.

I am so happy to say I finally finished this one! It's been on my TBR since who knows when 🤣

Larson wrote a very detailed, and I do mean very, account of the Chicago's World Fair, the atmosphere and history of the time, as well as the serial killer hiding within.
Larson is a great researcher, this I'm sure of, and gave me so much new information specific to the fair but all in all, while I had a few disconnects.
