#pemberlittens #chapter16NS Dr. Davidson arrives and examines Mrs. Hale. When he finishes, her tells Margaret Mrs. Hales doesn‘t want him to share her personal health concerns with her daughter. But he does anyway ( no HIPAA at this time 😂) He tells Margaret she is dying but Gaskell does not reveal what disease she has (unless I missed it somewhere). Margaret vows to nurse her mother.

jenniferw88 You didn't miss it... I checked my book's notes and it doesn't even say it there. 2y
AllDebooks Nope, doesn't mention the suspected illness. I was a perturbed about the lack of ethics, does it not count because they're both women? 🙄 2y

Julsmarshall Definitely a sad chapter but starting to see a few layers to our characters 😊 2y
nanuska_153 @MicrobeMom @jenniferw88 I think it's just that the author couldn't bother looking into it and picking an illness, because it says that the doctor "spoke two short sentences in a low voice" but we don't know what he tells her 2y
MicrobeMom @jenniferw88 thanks for the confirmation! It was a rough day and I read this chapter quick! 2y
MicrobeMom @AllDebooks I have no doubt if it had been Mr. Hale the doctor would not have shared his diagnosis! 2y
MicrobeMom @nanuska_153 I think Gaskell wanted us to be guessing. I feel she did this on purpose so we would come to our own conclusion. We really do know little of what actually ails her. 2y
MicrobeMom @Julsmarshall I agree Mrs. Hale seems much strong than she is and we learn some more about Dixon. 2y
CrowCAH I really wished it came out what she had. Kinda drove me nuts. 2y
batsy I was curious about why the nature of the illness wasn't revealed, either. Was thinking maybe we find out later? 2y
eeclayton @CrowCAH I agree. Tell us or don't tell us, but don't tease us with whispering characters in the scene. 2y
nanuska_153 @MicrobeMom we just know it's painful and not contagious, maybe back then it was obvious 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
