The author‘s acknowledgment that this book is “a love letter to hometowns, and to the family, friends, and communities that raised us” sums it up. It‘s a beautiful tribute to the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. A relatable depiction of the changes and challenges faced by a 13 year old in middle school. A hopeful story that focuses on healing, dealing with changes, and importance of communication.

Chloe Kwon and Peter Li don‘t exactly get along well…even their parents are hostile to each other. The 2 families are barely making it financially at their respective shops at the town mall. Then they‘re notified that their shops have to leave; so Chloe and Peter work together to save the businesses…between a pick and a so-so

1. Yes, but that‘s mostly because I only have to shop for a few people. I still have to wrap everything, though. 😎
2. The main character in the tagged book helps out in her father‘s store, so there‘s some shopping involved. #two4tuesday

“Maya was young, but she was brave. She didn‘t back down.”

I would use this biography to tell the story of Maya Lin to older elementary students. This book may inspire and connect students with their own artistic abilities and dreams. It would also be an opportunity to expose them to the design history of the famous Vietnam veterans memorial in Washington DC.

This biography tells the story of Maya Lin from a third person point of view. It discusses her upbringing and important experiences and influences she has had to become the amazing architect and artists she is today. The book provides great detail and illustrations to enhance the smooth transitions and story telling approach to convey her life and accomplishments.

“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was the first of Maya''s many works of art and architecture-memorials, sculptures, structures and spaces, inside and out.“

This biography picture book would make a great read-aloud when talking about the Vietnam war and how we now have a memorial to honor all who lost their life. On some of the pages, there are little fun facts about Maya that would keep the readers engaged.

This biography is about a girl named Maya Lin whose family had left China in order to live the American Dream. Both of her parents were artists of sorts and Maya knew she too wanted to create something. In college, she entered a contest to create the Vietnam Memorial and she won. The author is someone who knew Maya personally from college so she was able to include firsthand experiences that Maya encountered while making the plans.
