While reading this book tonight with my stepdaughter, I couldn't help but react to this line. It struck a chord with me that I don't let many people in on. 😕

#nofemmeber #debbiedowner
I had absolutely no idea who this character is so had to check on line. So whilst i don't think sonja necessarily fits the bill as Sonja is a middle age woman suffering from anxiety who is learning to drive but i fought I'd just mention it as a book of translated fiction that i really enjoyed this year.

Billypar I really like the title! And the character sounds like an interesting one to spend a novel with. 6y

An adorable children‘s book about a fish who thinks he‘s destined to be a #debbiedowner but at the end gains a new perspective when another fish sees him in a new light. “I‘m a pout-pout fish with a pout-pout face so I spread the dreary-wearies all over the place.” #NoFemmeBer @Cinfhen @Billypar

#nofemmeber #debbiedowner

In the book I just finished there‘s a character that fits this prompt and she‘s in charge of team morale!

But let‘s also give a cheer for the #debbiedowner They have something to say that other people don‘t want to hear but they say it anyway. ✊✊

Billypar True- it's unwise to dismiss the downers! 👍😞 6y
batsy I'm always cheering for #TeamDowner 😉 6y
Centique @batsy I figured we had that in common! 🙃 6y

DAY 9: The writing in this debut is so gorgeous, but that one inexplicable, gruesome moment is so fucked up. It totally ruined the book for me.

#debbiedowner #nofemmeber

Cathythoughts On my TBR ... interesting, my curiosity is up... 😬.. I think (edited) 6y
britt_brooke @Cathythoughts I‘m always curious to see what people think of this one. The writing really is impressive. 6y
Tove_Reads I‘ve been meaning to read it soon! 6y

britt_brooke @Tove_Reads I‘d love to hear what you think when you do! 6y
BarbaraBB Which moment? I don‘t remember much of this book though I really liked it. 6y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB The part where the mom impulsively, but savagely kills her daughter. 6y
Joanne1 I felt entirely the same. That was so brutal and inexplicable that I just couldn‘t reconcile it. There was no sense made of it by the author and because of that the story was senseless, everything else was ruined and you‘re right the writing was beautiful. 6y
britt_brooke @Joanne1 Thank you for backing me up! 💚 Seems like a lot of folks really liked this one, but that incident was so brutal. It never made sense and didn‘t seem like something that would ever really happen. (edited) 6y
Billypar I didn't read the spoiler, but I hadn't heard about this in connection with the novel- I will have to bear in mind if I pick it up. 6y
HKGirl Oh man...this was on my to-read list because a friend highly recommended it, but seeing that's there's a "brutal and inexplicable" moment in it makes me rethink wanting to read it. I don't think I could handle whatever it is. 6y
BarbaraBB I kept wandering why that happened but I still enjoyed this book a lot! 6y
britt_brooke @HKGirl It‘s truly a well-written book, but that one instance really threw me off. Take that out and it‘s a five-star read. 6y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB I enjoyed everything else in the book, but that was just so weird and disgusting. I just couldn‘t imagine it really happening either. 6y
Cinfhen I actually enjoyed this book despite that horrible moment because the unraveling of the story and the prose was so gorgeous. Beautiful graphics 💚 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I look forward to seeing what she does in the future. Her writing really is beautiful. I just need a different story. 6y
Cinfhen Totally respect that, Britt! Hope you had a wonderful birthday 💋 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thank you! It‘s was a great day .... and extending it through the weekend. 💃🏼 6y
Reviewsbylola Hated this one. The writing style wasn‘t for me. 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Happy to know I‘m not the only one who didn‘t love this. I liked the writing style, but I really need a different story. 6y

Since I cannot think of a single book that qualifies for #DebbieDowner, you'll have to look at my butter chicken. A bit bland for my taste, but the kiddo was afraid of needing a gallon of milk if I made my regular Indian chicken dish.

#NoFemmeber @Billypar @Cinfhen
#YesFemmeberInNovember

Cinfhen So kiddo is a bit of a #DebbieDowner when it comes to Indian cuisine 😉😁 6y
julesG @Cinfhen Indeed! 👍👏 6y
rabbitprincess I'm having butter chicken for dinner right now! 😄😋 6y
Billypar I love Indian, but I've never attempted to cook it. I'm too worried it would be a huge downer to try the final product 😁 6y
julesG @Billypar It's not as daunting as I first thought it would be. I have a few recipes from a friend with Indian roots. I was able to watch her cook the dishes - I learn a lot from observation. 6y

Mehso-so

Talk about #debbiedowner. I am torn on this book, because the story itself was compelling but there were some fundamental flaws. The biggest one for me was the timeline. Smarsh tells the story of the women in her life—most were married multiple time. So it was difficult enough to follow in that regard but her timeline was non existent, which made it doubly difficult. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the flow of her story. #nofemmeber

Cinfhen Ugh, pet peeve - poor structure. I need things simple 😆 6y

MicheleinPhilly I was initially looking forward to this but then heard that she uses an imaginary daughter as a literary device. That put me off. 6y
See All 11 Comments
Reviewsbylola She does. Surprisingly, that part didn‘t bother me as much as I expected. She did not overdo it, so it didn‘t monopolize the text. @MicheleinPhilly 6y
merelybookish @MicheleinPhilly I agree with @Reviewsbylola about the daughter device. Initially I was uncertain about it, but by the end I thought it worked. 6y
MicheleinPhilly @Reviewsbylola @merelybookish Good to know. May still pick it up if I see it at the library. 6y
Billypar Yeah, I like a good solid structure. My current read doesn't have it, and I want to bail, but I'm still curious about what's going to happen. 6y
bermudaonion The fact that it was written to her unborn child that she never has was confusing to me at first. 6y
Megabooks Just seeing this. Heartland is up next for me, but seeing your review and the 20% rating makes me glad this is a library book! 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ll be curious to see what you think of it! I had a lot of mixed feelings. I was supposed to see the author speak last week but her flight was canceled due to weather. I think seeing her in person and hearing more about her perspective would have been cool. @Megabooks 6y
Megabooks I read two chapters and decided I wasn‘t in the mood for this kind of memoir. It‘s not a forever bail, I think, but it‘s due back on Overdrive soon, so I just returned it. I added to my remember to read list, so maybe in a couple of months. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

I feel like a #Debbiedowner but with govt focus on building a wall and corporate greed excessive and supported, ACES scores are ignored for prevention, inherited trauma is proven- yet we continue to both create trauma and limit support to the two cultures our country inflicted generational trauma on. “I need a hero! I‘m holding out for a hero til the end of the night” http://www.metrolyrics.com/i-need-a-hero-lyrics-bonnie-tyler.html #nofemmeber

Cinfhen Great song choice 😜I loved FootLoose 6y
Billypar I had a former boss who was a huge fan of van der Kolk - he's very influential right now in the New York mental health system (and I'm sure more widely). But, unfortunately, not at the federal level- very different priorities 😑 6y
Chrissyreadit @Billypar unfortunately it is not considered economically beneficial to support people in mental health. It is confusing because in the long term it probably would be. What kind of work do you do? 6y
See All 7 Comments
Billypar Quality assurance- very recently for a state mental health agency, but previously did the same for eight years in a child welfare agency. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Billypar fun. I worked for an agency called YAI for several years when I was much younger and still living with in NYC (edited) 6y
Billypar That's great- it's definitely important work! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Billypar I mentioned it because there was a high engagement with QA in NY but I‘ve not seen anything like that here in WV. It is very different. It could be because of size of organizations though. Or the way States are run. 6y
