Clare-DragonflyEmily persists in thinking the Count is an honest, nice guy who really cares about her well-being as he repeatedly shoves his obsessed buddy in her face 🙄2d
AllDebooksOh, we are so close to the end. The book, sanity, who knows? 🥳 I'm struck by the difference in writing style between this and Frankenstein, considering there are just over 20 years between publications. Mary Shelley was still in her teens when she wrote it.2d
eeclaytonNot to defend the Count, but I have the impression that he's been friends with Du Pont for much longer than with Emily, so it kinda makes sense to me that he wants to promote his happiness. Which of course doesn't make him any less annoying from E's point of view.2d
TheAromaofBooks@eeclayton - I also think the Count sees sweet, lonely Emily at a time when being a single woman was actually somewhat unsafe & knows that his young friend is an upstanding guy who loves her and would take good care of her (vs taking advantage of her and stealing all her money). Like it's annoying to E because she doesn't want to marry him, but lots of people married for convenience, so unless the Count forces the issue, I can't fault him too much2d
