Delightful! 5 years after the events of the 1st book, Patrick takes his niece and nephew, Maisie and Grant, on a trip abroad. The final destination is Italy, where their father is getting remarried, but the kids want Patrick to stop the wedding. On the trip, Patrick tries to teach the kids about love, much like he taught them about grief in the 1st book, in the hopes that they will accept this new life change.

Re-read this because a work friend is going to Norway next year and I remembered Bill Bryson going. Interesting to remember what traveling in Europe was like in the 90‘s.

TheBookHippie OMG and the 80s!!! It‘s so different now. 3d

The Storygraph has this AI-powered book preview (basically a prediction about whether a user will like a book or not) that I like to look at after I finish a book. This is from its prediction for how I'd feel about The Guncle Abroad. It seems like it's figured me out pretty well. It makes me wonder: How much can you tell about a person based only on their reading history? I feel like the answer is, "A lot," but I'm not sure about that.

This one is relatively fun, and it's kind of nice to have Patrick called out on some of his silliness, but I'm not sure I'm super interested in general in people for whom flying first class is the default and purchasing real estate in SoCal or NYC is no big deal. The characters spend their time displaying a lack of awareness about their own wealth, being wowed at others even richer than them, and delivering one liners and schmaltz. Fun but light.

This lady has no respect for my to-do list. Or the fact that my coffee mug is empty. At least my book is within reach (just out of frame).

A quick , fun read. What I LOVED was that Dan included pictures of the actual trip at the end of the book. His 13 year old self seemed like a such a sweet kid 💕

The fun sequel I‘ve been waiting for. GUP is back and I loved him just as much as before. His humor is on par and his witty rules of life are what I needed. “He was done being sad” 💜Book #33 in 2025

"If we don't remember all that we want to forget, we are exposed to the danger of forgetting to forget certain things."

This one starts so promising but then it feels all over the place in terms of writing and ideas. The narrator arrives at an old-style grand hotel that seems to have lost its past glory and the story moves back and forth between the time of his stay in the hotel, and his memories with his former lover Clio.
