A Head Full of Ghosts
A Head Full of Ghosts: A Novel | Paul Tremblay
A chilling domestic drama that blends psychological suspense with a touch of modern horror from a new, brilliantly imaginative masterThe lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents' despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie's bizarre outbursts and subsequent descent into madness. As their home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts' plight for a reality television show. With John, Marjorie's father, out of work for more than a year and medical bills looming, the family reluctantly agrees to be filmednever imagining that The Possession would become an instant hit. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend.Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie's younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long-ago events from her childhoodshe was just eight years oldpainful memories and long-buried secrets that clash with the television broadcast and the Internet blogs begin to surface. A mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising disturbing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.A Head Full of Ghosts is a terrifying tale told with inventive literary flair and unrelenting suspense that craftily, cannily, and inexorably builds to a truly shocking ending.

So, is Marjorie possessed or is she suffering from mental illness? It doesn't seem like the author ever really decided, which makes the story a little wishy-washy, but overall I liked this one. It's spooky and captures well the vulnerability of childhood, especially the precarious period on the cusp of adulthood when adults are afraid of us.

Pic: While listening to this book, I spotted this SoCal tree trying out "autumn in New England" cosplay.

Reagan-reads I felt the same but it has grown on me since. I liked the unknown. I felt the same with Cabin at the End of the World. 3d
ImperfectCJ @Reagan-reads What's funny is I felt like reading this one again as soon as I finished it. I might need to get it as a book-book instead of audio. And now I have to get Cabin at the End of the World... 3d

I saw some positive reviews about this book so I grabbed it during and Audible sale. The narrator did a great job and the story was suspenseful. Something supernatural, mental illness or just a teenager acting out...?

this is one of those books that is good in itself but could be great with a cleaner execution 📚 I appreciate that a good part of this book is a commentary on mental illness treatment and financial issues in obtaining it. the blog posts are awkward to read (and sort of unnecessary?) but I think Tremblay captures the mundane parts of daily life from a child's POV pretty well. also, I don't mind the ending but I see why people dislike it.

A horror thriller that makes you think. . .

*When does normal teenage girl behavior stop and mental illness begin?
*Could there ever be evidence for the supernatural?
*How can a regular family survive mental illness intact not to mention afford quality medical care?

Troubling imperfect book that tackles some underlying big issues. This one will haunt me.

Creepy, fascinating, haunting, page-turner.

Unique and creative storytelling which is difficult to do with horror genre. The television show script developed within the plot was surprisingly enthralling. The novel has the perfect mixture of horror, details, and emotional connection between the characters. Through the story I was left guessing who and what might be real, a ghost, or just plum crazy. It all comes together in the stunning ending.

Marjorie stands over Merry‘s bed, hovering over her sister, which clearly recalls the found footage is-it-a-haunted-house-or-demon-possession movie? Paranormal Activity. Both camera angles and lighting are similar. Marjorie is dressed just like Katie, wearing boxers and a tight T-shirt. The Possession spices up the simple #dread of hovering over a sleeping loved one with Marjorie pinching her little sister‘s nose shut. #QuotsyOct19 #AllHallowsRead

some coworkers highly recommended Tremblay's "Cabin at the End of the World." I loved it. I read this one next though, and wow. All my coworkers liked Cabin better, but this is my favorite of the two.
I'm not usually a fan of open endings, but Tremblay pulls it off in a way that's all so purposeful and perfect for the plotline.

It wasn't perfect of course, but I think it was one of the best horror/suspense books I have read in a long time.

So I absolutely hated how the blog posts were written, but other than that, I liked this book. When I started it, I planned to only read a couple chapters and then do something else, but I got so engrossed I ended up reading 1/3 of it instead. It wasn‘t particularly scary, but I did find it unsettling at times and also rather sad.

#LilithJuly I read the tagged book earlier this year and it was the perfect blend of creepy and clever.
