A Tale of Two Cities | Charles Dickens

Two of my favorite #male authors—Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare! Both very prolific and hugely talented, they each made an indelible mark on English literature!

vivastory Amazing! When I was at the book store last week, I nearly grabbed the sequel to The Three Musketeers 6y
Trashcanman @tournevis could mess that book up. 6y
tournevis @Trashcanman I have all of them already, just not this big. 6y
tournevis You could buy it for the collage potential. 6y
Kalalalatja What a beast 😄 6y
batsy Oh my, too bad that you and I can't read French. It's gorgeous! 😆 6y
readordierachel @writerlibrarian Whoa, really! Cool! In French? 6y
readordierachel @vivastory Nice! There must be Dumas in the air. I still need to read Three Musketeers. 6y
readordierachel @tournevis It would make some interesting art for sure. 6y
vivastory It's over the top & a bit silly, but I loved it 6y
readordierachel @batsy Isn't it just. And surprisingly light, haha. And yes, how great would it be to read French! 6y
readordierachel @vivastory Nothing wrong with that, in the the right mood. I read Count of Monte Cristo in high school and really loved it. I remember it being high on melodrama. 6y
vivastory I'm a bit of a sucker for melodrama. I'm loving Wuthering Heights, easily one of the most melodramatic books I've ever read. I'm hoping to read Count of Monte Cristo next year 6y
readordierachel @vivastory Oh yes, that is some prime melodrama! 6y
writerlibrarian @ReadOrDieRachel Yep 😁 I even took a picture of it and posted it last spring I think. 6y
readordierachel @writerlibrarian Too funny! We're on the same wavelength. 6y

I‘ve been enjoying all the different Little Men covers for today‘s prompt so I‘ll chime in with my edition!

saresmoore This cover is lovely, but is stressing me out! I think I‘m at the point of kid overload... 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Bahaha! I‘ll make you your own special cover. All the children will be gone and only that red book will be left for you on the blissfully quiet and empty stairs. 😆 6y
rubyslippersreads Pretty cover! But are those kids on the landing gambling? 😂 6y

Daisey I‘ve also enjoyed seeing the different editions today; maybe I should find the copy from my grandma to share as well. 6y
emilyhaldi How cute is that!!💙 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I think they‘re shooting craps. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Daisey Yes, do! (edited) 6y
batsy Cute cover! An abundance of children 😆 6y
DebinHawaii Great cover! 💙 6y
Daisey I went to find my copy and got distracted reading about the publisher. It‘s always annoyed me that there is no date printed in it. Apparently this is because it was a Chicago company that printed a lot of inexpensive unauthorized copies of children‘s books in the early to mid 1900s. 6y

Here is my next challenge book - letter F- ready to go.
There are so many complex familial relationships but this one perhaps is the biggest 'male' issue. I wonder which of mother/son or father/son takes up more print.
Anyway I'm looking forward to starting it soon.

So many of the characters in this are painfully #male, but I love how George Eliot uses their absurdity to illuminate a feminist perspective. I‘m still savoring this lovely volume, but I‘m about ready to punch some of these narcissistic dudes in their faces!

#MayLovesClassics

Mitch It‘s a beautiful edition though ! 🤣🤣🤣 6y
Itchyfeetreader Beautiful cover 6y
saresmoore @Mitch @Itchyfeetreader It really is a nice edition; makes for an enjoyable reading experience in spite of unlikeable characters! 6y

A Confederacy of Dunces | John Kennedy Toole
post image

Contrary to Miss Trixie's assertion, the central character of Toole's brilliant novel is not named Gloria, & is a #male I finally read this book a couple of months ago & it's a new favorite. Ignatius is ridiculous, pompous & oddly endearing.

The Last Man | Mary Shelley
post image

I've been so bad at challenges recently so I'm trying to get back into the habit with a postapocalyptic late 21st future as imagined by Mary Shelley in 1826. Remarkable as an early example of a genre that I usually see as modern and fascinating portraits of the important #male figures in Mary's life; her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. I prefer this to Frankenstein! #maylovesclassics @Sarah83 @Bambolina_81

Heideschrampf Awesome! Especially in combination with the hyper romantisist cover 😍 is it a folio society edition? (edited) 6y
Moray_Reads @Heideschrampf of course 😍 It's extremely Romantic which is a pretty powerful contest with the extremely bleak plot. Bleak but beautiful. I loved it 6y
Sarah83 Awwww.. What a gorgeous pic. 😍 6y

Kalalalatja I didn‘t know this book was a thing, but now I need it in my life! 😍 6y
ladym30 Stunning cover! 6y
jillrhudy I‘m ashamed to say I‘ve never heard of it! 6y
Moray_Reads @Kalalalatja @jillrhudy apparently it was slated at the time of publication and has largely fallen off the radar but I think it's stunning 6y
HardcoverHearts 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻Folio Society books! 6y
jillrhudy I can never think of Mary any more without thinking of Kate Beaton‘s “Hark! A Vagrant” comic strip about her. Be advised this is quite naughty and rude, as, I‘m sure, the men in her circle were. http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=56 6y
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy oh these are great! I haven't seen them before 6y
saresmoore I don‘t know how I‘ve never read this! I should‘ve known better than to scroll through your feed. Your posts are whittling away my resolve. 6y
