This is the sunrise over the Montenegro from my cabin this morning. #LiveOnABoat

Lincoln in the bardo is killing me. Started it the night before the #manbooker2017 announcement, but I'm not loving it. I know, I know, definitely it's me not the book. I rarely enjoy the Booker winners. Bring back Hilary Mantel!!!!

#ReadingOnRoam

TrishB Gorgeous view 💜 I didn't enjoy the book either! 7y
AceOnRoam Thanks @Trishb at least I have the magnificent view. I keep trying to see what I'm missing in this read. Only have a quarter left to go, thank goodness for that. 7y
BarbaraBB What a great view! Did you stay in Kotor? 7y
See All 13 Comments
AceOnRoam We are going towards there today @BarbaraBB We have spent 5 glorious peaceful nights here on Jaz Beach. 7y
BarbaraBB I am so jealous of you! We have sailed in that region as well. I liked Kotor a lot. Albania next or on to Greece? 7y
AceOnRoam We haven't decided. We are staying here for 3 more weeks. The customs officials were surprised, they said you can walk the coast in a week!!😃😃 7y
AceOnRoam We will head towards southern Turkey eventually @Barbarabb it's getting colder and colder here... 7y
BarbaraBB Yes, winter is definitely on its way. Turkey will be fine though I think. And after that? Suez? Or back across the Mediterranean? 7y
AceOnRoam We will head to Cuba, Mexico and the Panama Canal towards Australia. We miss the southern hemisphere a lot. Suez? Never. Way too dangerous, not worth the risk. 7y
BarbaraBB I thought so! Well, you have a great trip ahead of you. As I said, I envy you. Keep us posted! 7y
AceOnRoam Will do @Barbarabb thanks again for your interest. I hope you get to go sailing again soon! 7y
Ms_T Spectacular view! 7y
AceOnRoam Thanks @Ms_T we have moved onto lunch, I will post in a minute! 7y

Congratulations to George Saunders for the Man Booker Prize! I read this book this summer and recommended it to everyone. Actually, listened to it with a full cast of 166 people. #manbooker2017

Indexasaurus I liked this one a lot, too. Between this one and Kazuo Ishiguro winning the Nobel, I'm happy with this years award winners for a change! 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess @Indexasaurus Me too! 👍🏻😉💕📚 (edited) 7y
Wife I bailed on the audiobook, maybe I need to try it in print?🤔 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess @Wife maybe, I don‘t know. I hope that you enjoy it. 7y

The #manbooker2017 WINNER! 😱
___
I really loved Autumn, but haven‘t read this yet! My advice? If you‘re a heavy library user get this quick before the waiting time triples. 😝
___
Are you surprised? I honestly, am shocked. Especially since all of the negative backlash #manbooker has had recently for having American authors on the list in the first place.

Marchpane Yay!! 👏👏 I would have picked Autumn over this one but they were both 5 stars for me. Hope you enjoy it! 7y
mrozzz SHOCKED 7y
bookloo That‘s still high praise! Thanks, @Marchpane! ☺️ 7y

bookloo @mrozzz I feel you Mel. 😰 7y
Redheadrambles Happy little squeals of joy over here, especially since I got the book signed at the Auckland writers festival earlier in the year but also I could have backed an Autumn win 7y
JamieArc Is it terrible that I didn't want 4 3 2 1 to win because I didn't want to read it??? Excited to read this winner! 7y
bookloo @Redheadrambles That‘s so cool!! Was he nice? 😮 7y
bookloo @JamieArc Haha! Not at all, I personally think the premise is interesting but ooo the size. 😮 7y
Redheadrambles @bookloo Oh yeah I thought he was so charming ! Also super erudite and funny. 7y
bookloo @Redheadrambles Sold. He sounds wonderful, I have to bump this up quickly! 😍 7y

Congratulations George Saunders ! I could not be more pleased about this result . #Manbooker2017
it‘s one of the best books I have read this year 😀🤚👍🏻

Theresa I'm so thrilled that this is the book that won!! 7y
Redheadrambles @Theresa So am I ! This rarely happens with the winner, that I unreservedly love it but this year they got it spot on 👍🏻 7y
Marchpane A deserving winner. Expect more talk about 'should the US be included' 😂 7y
Redheadrambles @Marchpane yes indeed I am sure ! I am happy and surprised that they decided to judge on the books and not lean into a need to give it to a British writer as I really thought they might. Two Americans in a row is going to throw some people into a tailspin I think 😀 7y
ClairesReads Oh preach. I love this book so much 7y

Making a start on this today. Hubs has already read and recommended it.
The #ManBooker2017 winner is announced tomorrow and this on the shortlist. I‘ve read and liked two other shortlisted books, Autumn & Exit West.
Anyone read and recommend any others? #currentread

ClairesReads I've read those three too- my heart belongs with Lincoln and Autumn though😍 7y
Brona Lincoln all the way. 7y
tif This is in my TBR pile tooand keeps popping up all over the place wherever I go so I think I'm going to need to get to it shortly 7y

Sydsavvy I love this cover. This one is so unique and brilliantly done, I'll be sad if it doesn't win. I've never read a book like it. 7y
Tamra @Brona 👍🏾 7y
AceOnRoam I had 4321 out twice on loan, I'm in line again on the holds queue but not really looking forward to returning to it. I have the Audiobook for Lincoln in the Bardo. Should read it tomorrow in case it wins. The rest are not available at my library unfortunately. 7y
Brona I did indeed love this book - glad to see it win an award 🥇 but it wont suit everyone - http://bronasbooks.blogspot.com.au/2017/08/lincoln-in-bardo-by-george-saunders.h... 7y

Who's your pick for the #ManBooker2017 prize?

My cheat-sheet is here:
Man Booker Shortlist 2017 – Books On The Go
https://booksonthego.net/2017/10/16/man-booker-shortlist-2017/

Tamra Lincoln in the Bardo! But it's silly me suggesting because it's the only one I've read. 😁 7y
Abailliekaras @TheBookStacker interesting! I would not be surprised. I gave it a so-so but I keep thinking about it and its almost biblical tone; he is very clever & his writing feels effortless. @Tamra I‘ve only read two of the 6! But I still have strong opinions about them all. 😂 7y
See All 15 Comments
Cinfhen I bought Lincoln the week it came out and I STILL have NOT picked it up! Not sure why I'm not ready to tackle it...however it looks like this could be the one, or not! It's so hard to judge these awards!!! 7y
vivastory I think it'll be Lincoln in the Bardo 7y
vivastory I also think that Ali Smith might win 7y
MrsMalaprop Starting Lincoln today, so should be able get a few pages in before the winner is announced. Managed to read Autumn & Exit West. Really liked Autumn. 7y
TheBookStacker I hated Lincoln that‘s why I chose Exit West. I liked Autumn so so and I really was not into wolves and couldn‘t get ahold of elmet. So 4321 is the only I chose to not read. (edited) 7y
Abailliekaras @MrsMalaprop 👏🏼 enjoy it! @TheBookStacker good effort! Will be very interesting to see who wins. @vivastory I‘m excited to read Autumn. Her speech for the goldsmiths prize was fantastically good. 7y
Abailliekaras @Cinfhen it took me a few pages to adjust but then I just went with the flow and adored it. 7y
batsy I'm going to weigh in with the certainty of someone who has read none of the books 😂: Lincoln or Autumn. 7y
Abailliekaras @batsy (speaking as someone who has read only 2), I fully believe you can have strong opinions even without reading the books! 😂 I would love either of those to win. 7y
batsy @Abailliekaras Thank you, yes! I agree 😁 7y
Simona I'm sulking and pretending that I don't care ... because The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is not on the shortlist and Elmet is! 😏😤😖 7y
Abailliekaras @Simona I know! Controversial 😉 7y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this book. It was the right amount of weird for me, and I like the way the narrator tells multiple stories to avoid the story she doesn't want to tell. Do I see it winning #manbooker2017 eh probably not.

Short list has been announced. I've only read Saunders but Exit West is on hold at the library. What's your favorite? #manbooker2017 #tbr #overdrive

PandaPanda I've only read Exit West but I absolutely loved it. 7y
Howseldomtheydo @PandaPanda Good to hear! 7y
NerdyRev I liked all of them, except Auster's book. I think Exit West will take it, but my secret hope is Lincoln in the Bardo. The sleeper is Autumn. It is fantastic and very few have read it. 7y
See All 18 Comments
Mamashep I've only read Bardo but can't wait to read Exit West. Is it bad that I, once again, haven't even heard of a couple of the books?😬 7y
Howseldomtheydo @NerdyRev Auster's premise sounds interesting but at 866 pages I think I will pass. 7y
Howseldomtheydo @Mamashep I hadn't heard of them all either. Think I will add Autumn to my TBR. 7y
HippieChickHomeschool I've read History of Wolves and I don't know why it's getting so much attention. It was just okay to me. I've heard nothing but raves about Exit West and Autumn. I really want to get to Autumn while it's actually Autumn! 7y
BookBrat I'd give Lincoln a slight edge over Exit, but those are the only two I've read. 7y
cajunsyd I haven't read any yet but I have Exit West and 4321 on my list already. Adding Autumn now! 7y
bedandabook I've only read Exit West, but absolutely loved it. I thought it a wonderful tale, superbly told. Autumn has been on my TBR pile for months now and I've just bought 4321. The others I hope to get round to. 7y
BarbaraBB My favourite of the shortlist is Exit West. Unfortunately my favourite of the longlist, Home Fire, didn't make it to the shortlist. 7y
HeatherBookNerd I've only read Lincoln in the Bardo but I absolutely adored it. One of my favorites this year. Exit West is what I've got coming up next. 7y
charl08 Love Autumn, hope it wins. Lincoln was good too though. Wasn't sold on History of Wolves - great for a first book but not Booker class. 7y
minkyb @BarbaraBB So glad to see your comment about Home Fire. I was disappointed it did not make the short list. 7y
BarbaraBB @minkyb It is such a good book! That ending... 7y
JenicaDawn I really loved Exit West! 7y
Howseldomtheydo @BarbaraBB @minkyb I will have to check out (edited) 7y

The Man Booker shortlist has just been announced. Shocker: The Underground Railroad isn't on it!

Do you have a favourite to win? #ManBooker #ManBooker2017

Sue Shockingly I haven't read any of these, but my vote is for anything that isn't 4 3 2 1 7y
LeeRHarry I haven't read any either, being on the Booker list puts me off a bit as I rarely have any luck with these books 😏 7y
batsy Haven't read any and the only one I'm interested in is Ali Smith. It's like they decided they could only have one brown author on the shortlist 🙄 Having read the Roy and almost done with Shamsie, and maybe I have to read Hamid to see if it's the better book. 7y
See All 21 Comments
Marchpane Not a Paul Auster fan @Sue? 😂 I've read the Saunders (loved it) and the Fridlund (meh), the Smith and Hamid are on my TBR @LeeRHarry they can be disappointing, who knows what these judges go for? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
LeeRHarry @Marchpane who knows indeed! 😏 7y
Marchpane @batsy it's true the shortlist is considerably less diverse than the longlist 😟 I've heard nothing but raves for Autumn, must get to that one soon. 7y
Sue @Marchpane 😂Every review/comment I've seen has the same two themes : a) too long and b) too wanky. I've not read him though so please tell me if I'm wrong! 7y
Marchpane @sue No, wanky is accurate 😂 I'm not about to read a book that length unless someone I trust tells me it's amazing. 7y
Sue @Marchpane You said it sista! 7y
Ms_T I have 4 3 2 1 on Audible but it's a massive 37 hours long and I'm finding that quite intimidating 😳 7y
AmyG I've read Exit West which was good, Lincoln which I loved and Wolves which was kind of meh. No way am I reading the Auster. The final list does not thrill me. I hope Sainders wins. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Exit is way overhyped (just my two cents) but happy to see Lincoln and Wolves made it! 7y
JenP I loved 4: 4321, autumn, Lincoln in the Bardo, and Exit west. I enjoyed history of wolves but didn't think it deserved to make it. Did not like Elmet. I'm rooting for Autumn which was perfection. But, I'd be happy for any of my top 4 7y
JenP @batsy you're right, bout a very diverse list 😟. 7y
JenP I'll speak up for 4321. It is a great book but yes, it's dense and requires a significant commitment. I thought it was brilliantly written and interesting reflection on fate. It could have been 200 pages shorter but it is really strong. It definitely deserves a spot on the list. 7y
MicheleinPhilly I'm so glad I stopped my whole "must read the entire short list" thing I did in my 20s. Meh. 7y
TrishB Only read Lincoln and didn't like it. 7y
bookloo Really disappointed in this year's list. I read Exit West and Autumn and found both to be incredibly boring. I'm absolutely shocked The Underground Railroad didn't make the shortlist, and I hope (although I know he probably won't) Paul Auster takes this one. 7y
Reviewsbylola Oh I know!! @MicheleinPhilly I used to want to read them all. Now I just don't care. 😂 7y
TheBookStacker I was surprised I honestly thought Whitehead would win. 7y
Redheadrambles Well I am not unhappy with the three I have read being there - Autumn, Lincoln, and Exit West although I too would have preferred The Underground Railroad. I wonder if it suffered from already being highly lauded elsewhere? I still maintain this will not go to Saunders but a "British" writer just because otherwise there will be howls of "the Americans are taking over" ? but I will be more than happy and delighted to be wrong about that. 7y
