Day 29 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - my last Henry for a while as we are at the end of the tall shelf & heading back to roughly alphabetical order next time!! I've mentioned before that we used to go to the library every week when I was growing up (Wagnall's Memorial, which looks like a castle). The children's library wasn't huge & even then I was a fast reader, so I checked out & reread favorites regularly & Cinnabar was ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) one of them & maybe the reason that I love foxes?? Anyway, set in Virginia after George Washington's presidency, foxhunting was still a sport & Cinnabar actually enjoys the challenge of trying to trick the hunters (including Washington himself!). Most of this story is about one particularly eventful hunt with several close calls along the way.

As I got older, many of the books that I loved growing up made their way to the discard ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) bin at Wagnall's & I actually own several books that are the exact copies that I read when I was young, including this one, so the library's loss was my gain!!

As an aside, isn't it funny that they used to print special library editions, but don't any more? Instead of jacket covers, they were hardcovers with the jacket illustration actually printed on the front like this one. No library editions any more, which makes me a little sad!!

Crazeedi That is so cool that you have the special books you read when you were young❤ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - Part of me is sad because it seems like these books should never have gotten “too old“ to be in the library but... I do love having them!!! One even still has the “check out card“ in the back, where kids used to sign their name back in the day & it has my mom's best friend's signature on it from when she was in probably 4th grade & checked it out! 4y
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks that's very cool! Yes I remember signing name to cards when checking out books. I loved working in my library in elementary and high school 4y

Born to Trot | Marguerite Henry

Day 27 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - this wasn't one of my favorites growing up as I remember finding the book-within-a-book to be a bit confusing. However, I did soak in a lot of info about harness racing that still pops into my brain at random times (like being aggravated when a picture shows a trotter & a pacer in the same race haha). It's been a very long time since I read this one - another book overdue for a revisit!

Day 25 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - fellow Littens will understand that my favorite vacation souvenir is a book! I love buying books when I am on a trip, as the book becomes connected with those happy memories every time I read it. This one was purchased on a family trip to Vermont back in 1997, and while it isn't my favorite of Henry's books, it's still a fun little story about a girl & her mule. As with Misty's Twilight, ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) part of the problem with this story is that Henry is covering several years' worth of time in only about 100 pages, which means that character development is almost nonexistent and the plot is a bit thin - a likable story, but not one that I would choose if I was introducing someone to Henry's work. 4y

White Stallion of Lipizza | Marguerite Henry
post image
Pickpick

I have a very soft spot for Marguerite Henry, who was one of my very favorite authors when I was a little girl. In retrospect, I've realized that a huge part of this was due to the amazing illustrations of Wesley Dennis, who illustrated almost all of her books. This story is about a young boy who lives in Vienna and loves the Lipizza stallions. He overcomes the odds to become a rider at the school. A charming story with fabulous illustrations.⬇️

TheAromaofBooks I did get the opportunity to see the Lipizza stallions perform when they came through Columbus when I was in high school. They are truly stunning and well worth the cost of admission. If I ever make my way to Vienna, it would be pretty fantastic to see them on their home turf!

I chose this book for #childhoodfavorite because I remember being enchanted with it when I read it in elementary school. As an adult- not so much although it has its moments. I will send it to my nephew who is now close to the age I was when I first read it and find out his opinion. #booked2018

Tomigirl44 I read a lot of her books as a kid but hadn‘t heard of this one; I appreciate your review 6y
