Recommended reading this Memorial Day.

Susanita My office did an event about LGBT rights in the military, back when it was still okay to talk of such things. She was the main speaker and gave an interesting presentation. 4d

Published in 1980, only four years after Belenko's escape from Russia (and well before the fall of the Berlin Wall), this book was quite fascinating. Belenko actually had more or less the ideal situation in Russia as the MiG-25 pilots were highly valued and treated well (by Soviet standards). Reading about his slow recognition of the cognitive dissonance between what he was being taught about his country vs the west and what he could actually ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) observe with his own eyes was intriguing. Thoroughly enjoyable and a reminder of what life in the Soviet was actually like.

TieDyeDude I used to read a lot about the Cold War, though admittedly most of my reading had a Western bias. This sounds like it would be a really interesting book! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @TieDyeDude - It's a really quick read (under 300pgs), which is nice but also means that sometimes I wished I could get more details. When I was checking to see what happened to Belenko after 1980, I was surprised to find that he just passed away two years ago! 1w

Not my favorite Conroy. The descriptions of Charleston were long-winded and boring; and quite frankly, annoying. But the story, oh man, what a story! It was compelling, ugly, thought provoking, gripping, and worth reading.

julieclair I‘m adding this to my stack, and will skim past the Charleston descriptions. 😉 1mo
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair That's exactly how to read it 😁 Outside of that it was so good! 1mo

Completely fascinating book about Area 51, which the US has never acknowledged, and the nuclear and airplane research and testing that have occurred there. This gives insight into where UFO conspiracy theories may have originated. I do take it with a grain of salt, though, given that some of the information isn‘t truly verifiable.

tpixie I enjoyed this also. 2mo

Reasons given for the acceptable practice of initiating new men into the military using homosexual sex acts. I‘m really going to need them to show their work on that second one. The other two make no sense either, but that one is extra special.

No weekend break in the new regime! They‘ve fallen in love with the trick of posting big news on a Friday night. This week it was the firing of three top officers at the Pentagon. After previously firing the Coast Guard commandant. I wonder why??

As a #longtimefed I sometimes had the opportunity to see high-level officials in person. I also saw four POTUS speak, from much farther away than I was for GEN Powell. Clinton was the best speaker.

Aims42 Ugh. I miss the days of waking up and not instantly thinking, “Welp, let‘s check the news to see what he dismantled while I was sleeping” 😒 3mo

The_Penniless_Author Saturday too. Nothing improves morale like a random email demanding we justify our jobs in five bullet points or risk being fired: https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/22/politics/elon-musk-employees-emails/index.html 3mo
Susanita @The_Penniless_Author Right? I‘ve seen some brilliant responses on Bluesky though. Also, “requesting to understand” means what? 3mo
Amiable @Aims42 SAME. I haven‘t had a full night‘s sleep since Nov. 5. 😖 @Susanita Sending virtual hugs. I know they don‘t change the situation, but it‘s all I‘ve got right now. 3mo
Susanita @Amiable Hugs are always welcome. 3mo
