#unpopularopinion For me, this was unnecessarily convoluted and tedious. I liked the concept and the alternate histories, but the story often dragged and I detested Kite. I don‘t feel like he was ever redeemed and I hated his mood swings. It probably would have been easier to follow all the time jumps in print, but the pacing was so slow, filled with extraneous detail, I know I would have bailed before the 1/4 mark. #moremehthanyay

Considering I bailed on 5 books this week, I‘m surprised I finished anything, but I did. I loved the latest issue of Saga, but while I enjoyed the others, I didn‘t love them. I consider both lukewarm picks. Onto my work book club selection today, since we meet on Thursday. I‘m hoping this one doesn‘t let me down. #moremehthanyay #bookreport

Cinfhen Love the graphics/ very cheerful 😃 Hurray for finishing 3 books and allowing yourself to bail on the others. I know you don‘t like to bail but you know what I say….#AllHailTheBail 🥰 2y

I was sadly disappointed in this. It had some creepy moments, most of it fell flat. I appreciate the fact that the cat didn‘t die. I did like he characters for the most part, even though some of Cara‘s decision making was laughably bad. #moremehthanyay #borrownotbuy (Also, the digital version has been on my NetGalley queue for more than a year, so Yay! for clearing some of that backlog!)

Another pretty good book week. One bail, three finished books (one read in it‘s entirety), and a lot of progress in Mrs. Mohr. I‘m also going to start Dim Sum of all Fears on audio tonight.
Miami Noir: the Classics and The Spy and the Traitor were both excellent. Pirates was #moremehthanyay. Mrs. Mohr Goes Missing is delightful so far. 💖

Had a pretty good week, all things considered, and I probably won‘t finish anything else today, so here‘s my #bookreport for the week:
Bailed on Girls Burn Brighter—too dark
Still in progress: The Luminous Dead—starting to feel repetitive. I need SOMETHING to happen!
Finished:
The Three Musketeers (4 ⭐️)
The Windfall (#moremehthanyay)
A History of Magic (3 ⭐️)
The Marriage Clock (3 1/2 ⭐️)

Cinfhen Oh wow!!! You had a great reading week❣️How did your MRI go?? I hope, no migraines this week 🙏🏼 5y
DGRachel @Cinfhen I will get the results of the MRI the week after next, I think, or maybe it‘s the week after that. I‘m sure it will only show more migraine related scarring, so I‘m not really worried, just frustrated about the expense. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But thanks for asking! 😘 5y
TrishB Girls Burn Brighter was dark - I just had to finish though. 5y
DGRachel @TrishB I‘m just not in a mental place where I can handle the events that were happening in the book. Maybe I didn‘t reach a point where I had to know how it ended. I just reached a point where I couldn‘t take reading about any more abuse. 😔 5y
TrishB Yes, sometimes you‘re not in the right place for it and there is no point in continuing. 5y

#MoreMehThanYay

I really liked how the book deals with race, privileges, and prejudices. However, all of those good things got a bit lost in the parts told by Boy, because the writing style got too incoherent, jumpy and pretentious. The part told by Bird was great, imo, but it was too short compared to the rest.

erzascarletbookgasm What a great cover, though 6y
rockpools Gorgeous picture! I‘ve found I want to enjoy her books more than I actually do - will probably try again one day, but 😕 6y
IndoorDame Agree! I started this last month and I really love the premise, the social commentary, and Boy‘s voice, but I kept getting lost in it and putting it down. Not sure if I‘ll actually finish... 6y
cariashley I felt very much the same about this one and have been hesitant to try another by her. I have Gingerbread, from a recent bookstore subscription release. 6y

Circe | Madeline Miller

Mehso-so

#UnpopularOpinion time - I didn‘t like Song for Achilles at all. And this ended #MoreMehThanYay for me. I was kinda bored most of the way through, and while I liked Circe as a character, the rest of the book didn‘t do much for me. The pacing felt weird, and it felt like Miller was trying to cram to much into the book. Not for me...

#MarchMadnessChallenge

Soubhiville I‘m with you. In fact, I was bored enough to bail. 6y
alisiakae It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things! 😄 6y
alisiakae Also, even though I loved Circe, I agree that it felt like she did cram a lot into the story. 6y

TrishB I‘ve yet to start either of them! I will try eventually. 6y
saresmoore Well said! 6y
hlgreenfield That's a shame to hear. I was looking forward to both books! 6y
CoverToCoverGirl I loved Song of Achilles but I bailed on Circe! 6y
Cathythoughts I swayed towards popular opinion with Song Of Achilles ( there were some good moments & quotes ) ... but looking back now ... it was ok. I have no interest in Circe ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 6y
Kalalalatja @TrishB @hlgreenfield I know I‘m in the minority, her books just don‘t do it for me 🤷‍♀️ @Soubhiville @CoverToCoverGirl I was reading it for a challenge, which is a good thing since I might have bailed on it otherwise. It got better the further along I got, but never great. @Cathythoughts I thought for a long time, it might have been because I read the Danish translation that I didn‘t like Song of Achilles. But apparantly not 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft that‘s true! I love seeing all the different opinions 😄 6y
yourfavouritemixtape I felt exactly the same and was a bit confused because I heard so much praise around. 6y
