The magic of finding a home Mandy, a ten-year-old orphan, dreams of a place to call her own. Escaping over the orphanage wall to explore the outside world, Mandy discovers a tiny deserted cottage in the woods. All through the spring, summer, and fall, Mandy works to make it truly hers. Sometimes she "borrows" things she needs from the orphanage. Sometimes, to guard her secret, she even lies. Then, one stormy night at the cottage, Mandy gets sick, and no one knows how to find herexcept a special friend she didn't know she had.

She‘s Mary Poppins, Maria von Trapp, Queen Clarisse of Genovia, Lady Whisteldown… and a beloved author! 👑 She‘s Julie Andrews (Edwards), and on the new episode of my podcast, Erin La Rosa joins me for a full fangirl session about this icon and her first published work, MANDY. We talk about the book‘s emotional complexity, orphan stories, frenemies, and more. 🌸🌻 listen at the link in my bio!

This was so cute! All of the classic British children's novel style, plus the fun of hearing Julie Andrews' voice in my head as I read it. #childrensliterature

Mandy is one of my very favorite cozy, nostalgic reads! The title character is a lonely young orphan who discovers a #cottage in the woods and makes it a place of her own, fixing up the interior and #planting a beautiful garden. After being rescued during a frightening storm, Mandy finds her family at last. I never get tired of this sweet story. #WindsOfMarch #LitsySpringBreak

Mandy unfolds over the course of a year, but the first part of the story is #SetDuringSpring. An orphan longing for a home of her own, Mandy discovers a little cottage and decides to make it her own secret place. #Conflict soon arises- she has to lie to keep it secret, and soon she is forbidden from going out- but in the end, Mandy finds what she's been searching for. #magnificentmarch #MarchMadness

I finally read Mandy and it was just as delightful as everyone told me it would be. (Also if it took place today, when Mandy found the room made of seashells, she would charge people admission to take photos in it for their Instagram accounts.)❤️📚❤️

As I was unpacking boxes of old books I came across this absolute gem from my childhood. This book was magical for me. I still love books about secret gardens and hidden cottages. 🏡. I guess I just graduated from Julie Andrews to Kate Morton.

Mandy tidied the weeds and pulled out some of the summer flowers. It saddened her to do so. She was parting with beloved friends.

So fun when you discover your favorite book from childhood is also the favorite of other Littens. After comment conversation, @megt and I definitely agree it‘s lucky our copies survived our many childhood readings!

(And, yes, the author is THAT Julie Andrews🤓)

When I #NeedHappilyEverAfter I tend to turn back to the books of my childhood. I might not reread them, but simply seeing them on the shelf or flipping through a few pages reminds me of the joy they brought me before. Mandy was one of my absolute favorites. One of the few books I finished only to turn back to page 1 and start reading all over again.

Missed a couple of days of the #augustphotochallenge while I focused on preparing for school. Now I'm back just in time for #day28. When I need #feelgoodbooks, I usually turn to old favorites. This was one of my most-read books as a child. I dreamed of a secret hideaway like hers, with reading nooks all over the house and garden, a place all to myself. I still get all daydream-y about a house like that.

Laalaleighh Oh. My. God. This book and Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles also by Julie Andrews were my obsessions when I was little and you are the very first person I have ever known that has even heard of even one of them!!!!! 😊😊😊😊 😊 8y
ReadingEnvy Oh yeah I loved books about secret woods and gardens as a girl (I grew up in the woods!) 8y

ValerieAndBooks I loved this book as a kid! I must reread again but will need to find a copy. 8y
AmyS @Laalaleighh Really? I've heard of both books but only read Mandy. I remember how excited I was when I found out Maria from The Sound of Music wrote it! 😊 8y
AmyS @ReadingEnvy I grew up in the suburbs and am very much a city dweller now but also loved books about secret gardens and hideaways. Something about escaping to a quiet, green reading space always appealed to me. 8y

I still have my favorite childhood book, originally published in 1971. You may know this author better as Julie Andrews of Sound of Music & Mary Poppins fame. Mandy is a lonely little girl who climbs over the wall of her orphanage and finds an abandoned cottage. She decides to fix it up and lovely things come into her life as a result. Magical! #funphotofriday

Going old school with my #recommendsday pick! Written by Julie Edwards (AKA Julie Andrews, AKA Mary Poppins!), Mandy was one of my favorite books in elementary school. The finer details of the story are lost to me now, but I'll never forget the sense of wonder it filled me with all those years ago.
