Pickpick

Raised in Asia, this form of upbringing is not alien to me... Though Amy Chua may have taken it up a notch.
Tagging this as #somethingaboutsurvival as this is how parents teach their children how to "survive" in Asia.

Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit Aww, thank you! 💗 5y
Bookzombie @Cinfhen It was kind of a surprise. I like Grann quite a bit and had already read The Lost City of Z and a collection of his articles, but I cried at the end of this one. Also, it‘s a short read. *Disclaimer: I cry easier than most. 5y
Cinfhen I heard it‘s VERY SHORT but I LOVE his writing!!!! And I‘m a HUGE crier 🙄 5y

The Innocent Man | John Grisham

Pickpick

Compulsively readable true crime about two murders in a small town and the miscarriages of justice that allowed for innocent men to be imprisoned, with one headed to death row. First half leading up to the trial was a bit slower; second half moved quickly, though it was a bit difficult to keep all the different players in the story straight. Overall, very much a pick.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds intriguing! 6y
Drocchio03 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was so good. I now have to binge watch the Netflix series! 6y
Kaye If you‘re interested, there was another book about a different murder that occurred in this same town around the same time. It‘s very good ! 6y

stacybmartin My lab does a lot of work with the Innocence Projects (particularly Ohio‘s) - it‘s very inspirational. You should check out 6y
Drocchio03 @Kaye Thanks for recommendation. Dreams is mentioned and Grisham covers (to a lesser extent) the kidnapping/murder on which it‘s focused. I plan to check it out! 6y
Drocchio03 @stacybmartin Thanks for the recommendation. Your work must be very interesting - and rewarding. 6y

Added another wonderful #nonfiction2019 book today. Dopesick. Read it. #somethingaboutsurvival

JamieArc It‘s being considered for our One Book One Community event where the author will come. I hope it‘s picked! 6y
Samplergal @JamieArc She must be a fascinating speaker. I hope she is available to come to your event. It was a great read. 6y
Amiable Ooh, this is a good option for the "something about survival" box. I've been pondering what to read for that one. Thanks for the suggestion! 6y

Samplergal @Amiable You‘re welcome. This is going to be difficult, imho. I don‘t read for challenges usually. I‘m trying to stretch a bit this year. I did so many political books last year, I think I‘m done! The news is bad enough. Lol. 6y
Amiable @Samplergal I know what you mean! For my "something with politics" I'm reading a bio of Harry Truman. Recent politics gives me a migraine! ? 6y
Samplergal @Amiable oh good idea. I think I have a bio on Kennedy here somewhere. 👍🏽 6y

What an amazing book! 4.5⭐️

I have been interested in the Donner Party ever since I read about them in the 3rd grade. This account mainly follows Sarah Graves and the difficult situations and choices she, her new husband, Jay, and other family members make. It took me over a week to read because some parts required “mulling time.” Overall, a fascinating, well researched piece of #narrativenonfiction.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh, sounds so good! I saw a documentary about it awhile back, I wish I could remember the name of it, but truly such a sad and terrible tragedy when you find out more about it. 6y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It is, and I think you‘d really enjoy it. He‘s very meticulous about getting his facts straight, yet keeps the narrative spirit well. 6y

Cinfhen I‘m reading this book later this year!! Can‘t wait. Great review 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Thanks! I hope you enjoy it! 6y
alisiakae My early morning fog brain misread Donner as Dahmer, and I kept thinking, you learned about Jeffrey Dahmer in 3rd grade? Oops! Then I kept reading and it clicked. 😮 (edited) 6y
Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft You know, I think the whole Dahmer thing happened when I was right about the third grade, so six of one, half dozen of the other! 🤭 6y

#NonFiction2019 I almost forgot about my non-fiction bingo card! Dead Wake is appropriate for a few of the squares(Somethjng With History, Something With Travel)but I‘ve gone with #SomethingAboutSurvival That anyone survived the sinking is miraculous, the chaos onboard, inexperienced crew, cold water & slow rescue all caused so many needless deaths, so the fact there was over 750 survivors is amazing. #WarIsHell

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like a great book! This challenge is adding so many more great books to my TBR list! 6y
