“I can‘t take another dead girl.”

Because of her mother‘s drug addiction, Sadie had to take charge of her little sister. She‘s done her best to protect Mattie and give her a normal childhood. When Mattie is murdered, Sadie sets out to find and punish the killer. The narration jumps back and forth between Sadie telling her own story and a podcaster investigating the case. This is perfect as an audiobook.

TW: sexual abuse / other harm to children

Wow this was an intense quick read! I thought it was pretty good. It‘s a YA thriller that came out about a year ago and had huge buzz then. @Bookishthoughts sent it to me in January and I finally got to it! Thanks Licia!

Well this was a sad, emotional read. Sadie is on the hunt for the man who killed her little sister. The story is told from Sadie‘s point of view, in the past, and a present day podcast. It was interesting going back and forth between a first person narrative and interviews; I hear if you listen the audiobook the podcast parts sound like an actual podcast.

Quite a few Littens had recommended listening to this one, and I have to completely agree. I feel like this book was made to be listened to. It was so engaging, but I‘m also completely addicted to podcasts so this was right up my alley. Sadie was such a unique character and I enjoyed her so much. This was one of my most fun, engaging reads of the year. I zoomed through it

Oooooofff. This was a tough one. Tough enough I had to augment my reading time on this super rainy day by baking/grilling English muffins. I understand why some who have read this were less than satisfied after finishing it. Simply put, it hurts to care for people who are suffering - real or not. And it really hurts when their story may not end as you‘d hoped. But that was why I give this book a pick. It was hard to read because it felt real.

CBee Perfect description of how I felt after reading this one! 2mo

Sadie is a self-reliant, strong young woman who never really got to be a kid. This novel deals with themes of violence, murder, abuse, addiction, pedophilia, grief and revenge. You get Sadie's story as it unfolds alternating with a podcast that deals with Sadie's sister's murder and Sadie's disappearance. A disturbing YA thriller.

This book effing broke me. I cried for every girl. (TW in spoiler tag.) The full-cast audio recording was brilliant, down to the MC‘s stutter. The ending is open, fair warning.

Sadie‘s sister has been murdered, and Sadie has left to avenge it. The book alternates between Sadie‘s narration and journey to find this man, and a Serial-like fictional podcast looking into Sadie‘s disappearance. Brilliant, but sad.

So you know what I said like an hour ago about thrillers, well, I didn‘t realize this was a mystery/thriller.

However! It follows a Serial-like podcast about a #missing girl and her dead sister. Loving the full-cast #audiobook! I‘m a sucker for those. 😉

My dad and I loved Serial when we were driving to/from Dallas for my last spinal fusion. It was my first foray into podcasts.

Tense is the main word that comes to mind for this one. I finished this last night and it's still lingering in my thoughts a day later. This is billed as YA but it felt more adult to me.
The format worked well (switching between Sadie's POV and crime podcast); each chapter left me wanting just a bit more. And the ending - I've seen a few complaints that it wasn't definitive enough but I found it very fitting

TrishB I thought the ending fitted, but would have liked it to be different if that makes sense! 2mo

Exceptionally well done, suspense although not entirely unpredictable. I read the audiobook with my daughter, 14, and got to experience some of the edge of the seat through her, which made it all the better. Hard to recommend in a general sense, as it has a dark theme. Mostly listening on our way back from Montréal, dropping off girls as we drove (safely, with their parents) then stayed up late to finish it last night.

Tense and gritty revenge plot thriller following Sadie as she hunts her sisters killer and West McCray as his podcast follows Sadie‘s trail. ‘In Mattie, Sadie found a sense of purpose, a place to put her love. But love is complicated, it‘s messy. It can inspire selflessness, selfishness, our greatest accomplishments and our hardest mistakes. It brings us together and it can just as easily drive us apart. I'm stopping both of these at the halfway point. Front Desk I really like but my digitally library loan expired and it disappeared, hopefully I can finish it later in the summer. Sadie, for all the amazing things I've heard, isn't quite what I was expecting. My favorite part is honestly the cover art. This is just going to a dark place I can't handle right now, and I'm not interested enough in the mystery or the writing to get me to keep reading.

A girl gone missing after her sister is found dead. Half the story is told from the POV of the missing girl. The other half is in the form of a podcast - at first I thought it gimmicky but its a v effective device that reveals more details to the reader. Would be a great audiobook! But as I read reviews my excitement waned, there were multiple that said it was underwhelming/disappointing. I almost DNFed this book, but I'm glad I didn't set it aside. and I felt goes in a direction where most YA books don't usually follow.
