Each year I try to read a huge classic..a masterpiece! This year it‘s War and Peace, and I‘m only 200 pages in and reading about war which is not usually something I enjoy. But I love Tolstoys writing. I love learning about Russian history. I‘m alternating reading and sewing my latest project❤️

Resurrection | Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

Pickpick

Resurrection is Tolstoys final novel. It‘s a glimpse of Russian life…a dark and dreary look at the legal system, incarceration, the divide between rich and poor. This explains for me why the Russian revolution happened!!
I loved it..his writing will be with me for a while!
Something light…Piorot and some short stories by AMS!
And my son‘s beautiful wedding to his soul mate last weekend..and me dancing with mine 🤣

Life could be worse😇 I‘m currently on vacation in Budapest, chilling in the sun in a park and reading a bit on my Kindle App. Can highly recommend this way to spend your sunday🤩

I‘m also positively surprised by my current Read- I‘m gaining a lot of interesting insights in Tolstoi‘s mind and thoughts about society from this read.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sounds awesome!! 📚 🌞 1y
Tamra Nothing better than relaxing on vacation. 😊 1y

Tolstoy: A Russian Life | Rosamund Bartlett
post image
Pickpick

I decided to make this a pick because of the sheer volume of research Bartlett put into this book. It‘s kind of mind blowing and super impressive. I recently bought a gorgeous edition of War and Peace, but I thought I should learn about Tolstoy‘s life before I dived in. That was a mistake…the more I read about him, the more I found myself disliking him. While I understand the profound impact he had on Russian culture and language ⬇️

RosePressedPages He was such an awful, narcissistic, selfish, and egotistical person. His treatment of his family and wife made my blood boil. He seemed to think whatever ideas or phases he was pursuing trumped his family in every way. I couldn‘t find a single review on Goodreads where anyone felt the same way. Everyone seemed to find his genius writing skills as an excuse for his poor character. While his eventual philosophies with serfdom, christianity ⬇️ (edited) 2y
RosePressedPages and private property were admirable, he was firmly a misogynist. I just can‘t overlook his flaws and I think it might take me a while to decide to pick up War and Peace now. 2y
Deblovestoread War and Peace is one of my all time favorite books but I wonder if I would feel the same if I had known more about the author. He sounds like a complete Ass. 2y
RosePressedPages @Deblovestoread I should‘ve just read the book and remained completely oblivious…he makes me so angry but it sucks cause he‘s so important to Russian history at the same time 2y

Last minute joining the #whiskyandperseverance read along of War and Peace. Hopefully, I‘ll be caught up by the end of the week.

I‘ve always wanted to read this Russian classic, and a chapter a day is the perfect way. Plus I have a whiskey cast, so it‘s almost the law I join in!

Your favorite book beginning with A

Thanks for the tag @MrsMalaprop and @jenniferw88 🤍

It‘s hard to narrow it down to just one favorite book but in the end I decided that I can‘t ignore this classic which opened my eyes to a whole new world: that of the Russian novels.

Tagging my fellow #CampLitsy friends @Megabooks and @squirrelbrain

I know, some don‘t like to read chunksters but if you do, there is a lot to be found here.I read it recently,Tolstoy had a great insight into the human condition, the consequences that can spiral out from an extramarital affair is a main feature of the novel with 8 parts & more than a dozen major characters,I kept a list! In this time of social change, Tolstoy captures universal feelings /motivations.

Amiable I‘ve been wanting to read this one for ages but haven‘t tackled it yet. 2y
Leftcoastzen @Amiable I started by reading 3 chapters a day ,but the chapters were really short .So I started reading 25 to 30 pages a day. I read multiple books at a time so I felt I needed a system.😄 2y
Amiable @Leftcoastzen I also read multiple books at a time, so I understand and appreciate the need for a system! 😀 2y

The fascination Tolstoy has in describing all of his female characters with “beautiful faces and tiny mustaches” is kind of beyond me. Things no one tells you about War and Peace…. #tolstoy #warandpeace #classiclit #canonlit #catsandbooks #cats #catsoflitsy

RaeLovesToRead Awww kitty! 🥰🥰 I forgot about the mustaches! 😄🙈 2y
Aaronofthe Aside from the life changing ideas about how the world doesn't care about you and you're just a minuscule cog in an immense machine.. I mostly just remember a cop being tied to a bear and thrown in a river.. and a rather sweet marriage proposal.. but it's been a while since I read it.. I could perceive it differently now. 2y
