4/5
Interesting first book in a mystery series set in Ghana where modernity clashes with tradition and superstitions. In this first book, we get to know detective inspector Darko Dawson: his family, his past, his good and bad qualities. I'm quite curious about reading the next book in the series (on hold at my library).

I enjoyed very much this first book in the Inspector Darko Dawson series set in Ghana. I really liked the main character and the setting. This is a series I'll definitely be continuing.

I‘m looking forward to reading other books by this talented author, particularly if they feature Inspector Darko Dawson. Set in Ghana, the Inspector is sent to investigate the murder of a young medical student and volunteer AIDS worker in the home village of his Aunt. We are are also introduced to the explorative practice of fetish priests taking Trokosi “wives.” Dawson knows there is evil here, but even he will be surprised at the final twists.

I enjoyed this: a murder mystery that is part of a series by a Ghanaian American author. It combines the whodunnit style centred on a less than perfect detective with explorations of traditional Ghanaian religious beliefs and practices, looking at how they support or challenge people, and tensions with Western medicine and culture.

#readaroundtheworld #ghana This police murder mystery provided me with a rich cultural background to Ghana. I learned about both urban and rural living there including the push and pull of traditional beliefs again modern western ones. The mystery was okay although many of the characters were a bit flat. However I loved all the names such as: Jesus Is Lord Chop House or My Savior Barber Shop, or In God We Trust Motors…

rockpools You‘re quick this month! I was considering reading a Kwei Quartey but our library system‘s down (still) so I can‘t even check what‘s out there ☹️ 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ While like other reviewers mentioned it followed a pattern but it was hard not to like Darko. Some of the information I almost felt expected to know and some of the characters I felt weren‘t necessary like his wife, son, and mother-in-law. I would #recommend it if you have an open mind. Also the title is a bit misleading. #litsy #mystery

I know next to nothing about Ghana and I learned a great deal. I really felt that I was in a different country and culture. This aspect of the story was excellent. However, it's a standard police procedural once you strip away the setting. I didn't find the mysteries compelling as I never felt anything for the victims. I also couldn't get invested in Darko's struggles to solve the mysteries nor in his family life. Maybe the book was too short?

If Ketanu had been an impressionist painting, it would have been dots and daubs of tan and brown. Buildings were cream colour or darker, and the rusted tin roofs exactly matched the ground. Tro-tros and taxis plied the streets, and shops and trading kiosks lined the roadside with entertaining appellations like Nothing but Prayer Electrical Goods and God Is Great Hair Clinic. 🇬🇭❤️💛💚 #Ghana

November reading summary, I had a pretty good month. Highlights from the month would be Wife of the Gods and Girl Waits with Gun. I bailed on one (North American Lake Monsters) but that had more to do with my mood than with the book itself, I think!

An excellent mystery, set in Ghana. I picked this one up as part of an effort to read author's from more countries and books set in more countries. The audio narrator was a bit annoying because he was inconsistent in pronunciation of some of the place names, but otherwise good.

When I read, I like to look at maps to help visualize the setting. I think this is the first book I've read set in (a somewhat fictionalized) Ghana so I had a lot to learn. This is also the first mystery I'd ever read (!) so I was having fun with the progression of clues, characters and twists...but then the main detective's violent outbursts turned me off and made me less immersed in the whole story. 😠

Looking for a good mystery this holiday weekend? Inspector Darko Dawson is sent from Accra, Ghana to another village because he speaks the local language. Inspector Dawson has to reign in his temper because the local villagers still believe in the old ways. The author is a physician who writes in the morning before seeing patients. Cool, right....write?
