This review is for the third Hex Files book. Loved this one! The relationship dynamics between Dani, Matthew, and Gray avoid love triangle cliches. The mystery is very strong, taking us into the world of the elves and giving us a better understanding of the hex files. Fun book that sets up the future of the series and made me want to read more!

This review is for the second Hex Files book. The mystery was fine, but I didn't love the direction the love story seemed to be going and was afraid the series was going to get stuck in the Stephanie Plum trap (i.e. an endless love triangle with no character growth for anyone). Luckily, the third book avoids that so I do recommend this as the series improves. But the character choices and tropes in this sequel makes it a bit of a slog.

Fascinating sad memoir. I wouldn't recommend it if you have unhealed trauma in your past. This is a remarkable story of survival and escape from a mormon fundamentalist sect in Mexico. The epilogue ends on a hopeful note, but most of the story depicts in haunting images/scenes the ways in which faith, love, abuse, and family loyalty can be entwined. Definitely not a light read, but worth the time if you're in a solid emotional place.

I wanted to like this book as I liked the idea of it- a mystery unfolding now that is linked to the end of the idealism of the 60s. There was nothing wrong with the mystery (although everything was a little too easy), but the real problem was that I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I kept hoping I'd care, but the female protagonist was very flat for me. I liked a couple side characters more, but they were really minor characters.

Enjoyable sequel. Definitely need to read the first one to understand this one. Delves deeper into the mystery of Jacob's mother and the world of the "special projects." The mystery aspect was less compelling this time, but I enjoyed the time spent with the characters and the use of setting and Jewish traditions.

A retired witch detective gets pulled back in for one last case when the mayor of NYC's hidden magic district is found murdered along with a goblin girl. Really enjoyed that this book held back. The characters clearly have a past history affecting their choices but it's not spelled out. See what I did there? Liked the world building. Looking forward to the next one. #WinterGames #SlayBells #ImpulseRead @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Do you want to burn down the patriarchy? Did you ever watch Stepford Wives and think "this is good, but it could use more blood and magic?" Yep, me too. And apparently Ben Blacker as well. All 6 volumes of the acclaimed satirical miniseries are collected in this one volume. Fun read but I do wish there had been more character development. #WinterGames #SlayBells #TBRRead 15 pts @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Very loose biography (ex. the author invents "likely" dialogue) that follows the murderer and victim through time. Less time is spent with the victim's story (her friends and family didn't support the writing of the book), which does/could tilt sympathy toward the murderer. Still found it fascinating! Loved the timeline convergence and description of NYC in the 70s. #WinterGames #SlayBells #HolidayRead @MidnightBookGirl @Clwojick @StayCurious

Cute cozy mystery but not memorable. I read it two weeks ago and already forgot the plot. Oh wait, I remember now. Dead body in a peppermint candy fountain. Still liked the characters but thought the lack of communication between the sheriff and holly (is that her name?) was nonsensical and just thrown in for conflict. Real adults talk. Loved the Santa subplot. #WinterGames #SlayBells #HolidayRead 20 pts @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Victorian ghost story told to girls by their maid. The story is intentionally unresolved to mimic a true story where one never really knows what is real and what imagined. Holiday Tradition- I wait until now to add wise men to my manger scene. My parents bought it in the 70s and it shows. The paint job is truly terrible. Also, Mary's hands fell off and I broke a wise man so I added Lao Tzu. Why not? I added the shepherd and the angel with the greek "Glory to God in the Highest" in my seminary days. Then I lost Jesus. And replaced Him with a flower. #WinterGames #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick

Enjoyable sequel about the debs living with the consequences from book one and continuing to investigate the pregnancy pact. There's a secret society subplot that was fun but totally silly. The scandals get a little ridiculous in terms of family trees and secret babies. More soap opera than high society. Surprised Nick's brother didn't wake up. Conclusion of the Man-eaters graphic novel series (issues 9-12). As with the previous volumes, the final issue doesn't tell a story but is instead a collection of ads, news, and art from the world. An interesting book with multiple timelines that explores a cold case murder that took place 3 days before Christmas in NYC in the 80s. One of the timelines is a novel excerpt from one of the other characters who is a suspect. Definitely wasn't what I expected, hence the so-so. Had I been in the right mood for a postmodern thoughtful mystery, it would have been great. #WinterGames #HolidayRead #SlayBells @MidnightBookGirl @StayCurious @Clwojick
