Dreams of Gods & Monsters
Dreams of Gods & Monsters | Laini Taylor
What power can bruise the sky?Two worlds are poised on the brink of a vicious war. By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera's rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her. When the brutal angel emperor brings his army to the human world, Karou and Akiva are finally reunited--not in love, but in tentative alliance against their common enemy. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people. And, perhaps, for themselves. But with even bigger threats on the horizon, are Karou and Akiva strong enough to stand among the gods and monsters? The New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy comes to a stunning conclusion as--from the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond--humans, chimaera, and seraphim strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

#BookSpin

This one was excruciatingly slow. Most of the time it felt like nothing really happened, and that the story just stagnated.
Then there is a burst of world building that doesn't really make sense or a new character is introduced that feels so out of place, it seems like a new book.

👇🏻 Continue 👇🏻

Enchanted_Bibliophile
In the end I realised that every new character and world building is necessary to get to what felt like a whole new story.
To me this book felt more like the start of a new series than the end of one.
And I'm now more curious about the godstars and nithilam and what would happen next, than I am satisfied with this as an ending

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Oh man. I loved the first one, slogged through the second, and I‘ve been putting this one off.. 12mo
Enchanted_Bibliophile @BookHoarder32 Same! If it wasn't my April #BookSpin it would still be on my shelf. Not that this book was bad all through. It just felt like it was a different series with Karou & Akiva as part of it. I felt a bit cheated, because in the first book we get this promise of an angel and a monster... We have these kick-ass characters and then it just doesn't go where you think it should. But not necessarily in a good way 12mo
Amiable Great job!
12mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Ok! My main problem with the second one was they kept introducing new characters and Karou and Akiva weren‘t together much. I think they‘re finally back in the same vicinity now. At least from what I remember, book two ended with them and their groups in a cave… i know i‘ll get back to it someday. Earlier this year, I made it through her Strange the Dreamer duology. (edited) 12mo
Enchanted_Bibliophile @bookhoarder32 I LOVED Strange, devour those books in a hot minute. Anyway, Yes they are together in this book, but so few chapters were dedicated to them being together. You should definitely read this one, it's still a good story; maybe just not the one I was expecting. 12mo
Cheshirecat913 I totally felt the same way about the 3rd book too. I loved the first one and the series overall, but my overwhelming thought for the 3rd is that the new characters were unnecessary and didn't really fit. 12mo
Andrew65 Well done on finishing it 👏👏👏 12mo
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Cheshirecat913 Exactly! It's almost as if she was starting a new series. 12mo

This last novel in the trilogy took me a little longer to get into than the first two, but once I was in, I was hooked. I could not put these books down. They are incredible!

5-11 Sep 2021 (audiobook)
There were a number of threads to this book, which perhaps required a little more concentration than I was prepared to give. I found myself having to rewind a number of times to figure out what I missed. It was a satisfying ending and the series a welcome distraction. I enjoyed the mythological aspects and the world building. And the narrator‘s Czech accent. But ready to move on to something a bit weightier this week.

Bk3 of #FabulousFebruary & Bk10 of Feb is done! What an amazing trilogy this was. To put it in context, I just burned through 1,648pgs in 27.38hrs! I think I‘m in for a massive book hangover, luckily I have Strange The Dreamer on my TBR! But I really hope she writes more in this universe, the Stelians have a story waiting I think🤞 #LitsyAtoZ2021 #LetterT #PennyPerPage #656cents #SeriesRead2021 #StackingTheSeries #PickYourPoison #KnifeOnCover👇

Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with Laini Taylor? I did not enjoy her Strange the Dreamer series at all and this one was kind of "meh".

First Book: LOVE
Second Book: Yeah, ok. It's good but not great
Final Book: Is it over yet?

This could have wrapped everything up in a lot less pages and where the hell was my epic battle? Why add a new character? Why all the extra crap? Why?

At least it's pretty to look at

TheAromaofBooks Always SO annoying when a series peters out instead of having a grand finale! 3y
BillBlume Oh, I despised this book. One of my most scathing reviews ever on Goodreads. I loved the first book, and I even loved the second, but this third book... 🙄 3y

FantasyChick @TheAromaofBooks Yes! It is. Luckily it doesn't happen often but when I does.... 😔 3y
FantasyChick @BillBlume Oh good! It's not just me. I don't know about you but I just found it boring. I think SO much could have been done to make this an epic finale and she totally missed the mark here. 3y
FantasyChick @BillBlume I wholeheartedly agree with that rant! 100% 3y

Cheshirecat913 I highly enjoyed the series, but totally agree that the last book did not need the new extra characters and that the story went sideways. 3y

This trilogy was a trip! I flew through all three books in a few days, neglecting sleep to see what would happen next. The last book was more uneven than the first two, introducing new characters and dragging the action out a bit, but it all came together in the end. There are so many more stories that could be told from this trilogy, I would love to see Ms Taylor revisit it one day. But I'm excited to begin Strange the Dreamer next!

Cheshirecat913 I loved this series too! I thought the adding of the new character in the third book did kind of tilt the book off it's path and dragged it out. Still, love the world she created! 4y

I thought this was an amazing end to the trilogy. Karou and Akiva were finally together again trying to fight together to defeat the "leader" of all seraphim, Akiva's uncle, Jael. This book kept me thoroughly entertained and I would highly recommend it.

Laini Taylor‘s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series was fantastic, period.

I have HUGE problems with every Urban Fantasy I‘ve read, and Kevin Hearne‘s Iron Druid series is no exception.

Horrorstör is a book my aunt let me read one night, and it was funny and scary. The book is excellently written and I need to get a copy of my own. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys trope-y (and maybe even bad) horror movies

I own a copy of this series but have not gotten around to reading them yet. Are they as riveting as their covers?

BillBlume I loved the first book. The second book takes a radical shift in tone for me, but I think it worked. The third book: I think that book is a total train wreck. 5y

I'm not sure how I felt about this whole book. I don't think the ending was bad or anticlimactic, but it felt almost like the entire extra Stelian plotline was put in as a last minute rush. The last 200 pages felt like a drag to me, and that's a tad upsetting. I don't know why, but I felt as if the farther I progressed in this trilogy, the less I enjoyed the romance interaction. I absolutely loved the first book, but this one just didn't cut it...

A good ending to this trilogy all my questions were answered as it was the longest out of all the books it did take a bit to get started with the story picking up speed the second one started off with action right off but once the 3rd book did take off it was a good ride. I‘m happy that they kept the romance to a minimum it really gave the story more time to develop and left room for details .

I was mystified when the story jumped from the chimaera and the seraphim to Eliza, a new character. Didn‘t take long to fall in love with her, though.

That thing with Ziri. 💩😢 I had to pause for a good cry before I could go on. Zuzana and Mik were as entertaining as ever.

I don‘t even know what to say about Karou and Akiva w/o spoilers.

There were a few places that felt overly drawn out, but I enjoyed the story and felt all the feels.
