I need more historical graphic novels like this in my life. I loved getting to know Soupy and, like her, getting a glimpse into hobo life during the Great Depression. The story and whimsical art transports readers whether it's to the side of the tracks getting ready to jump into a boxcar or deep in the woods eating Mulligan Stew at hobo camp. This is a great read.

It's #caturday so I'm hanging with the kids. It's still winter in Ohio so we're also under a blanket.

This book did not turn into the magical realism or fantasy driven thriller I wanted it to. It was ok but not worth the time I spent on it.

I tried to start this and could not concentrate on it enough. I'm not sure if that's telling or if I just am way too exhausted to start anything new this week.

Is this worth picking up again or am I better off waiting?

This was wonderful. If you're a fan of female friendships, realistically written women, historical fiction, and magic you'll enjoy McKay's latest. While the story does not rely too heavily on historical accuracy late nineteenth century NYC does offer an intriguing backdrop for this story to unfold in. I'm curious to see if McKay writes a sequel since more than a few threads of this witch's ladder have yet to be tied up.

This adaptation could not compare to it's source material but it was nice to get to see some of the characters. I wish more care and time had been taken with the traveling and returning scenes to really demonstrate the action.

I'm glad that I listened to this rather than read it as a print book. There were sections that probably could have been consolidated or synthesized for clarity and conciseness but overall, despite its length, this story lives up to the hype. There is no denying the power of this story and the power of the women who lived it.

I really wanted to listen to this one since Sidibe is the narrator but it popped up on my library's recent releases shelf last time I was in so I had to snag it in hardcover instead. Sidibe had me laughing out loud so much I had to stifle myself to avoid waking up my partner. This memoir is a great companion to other great memoirs of the body like Hunger and Shrill, but with a more sarcastic, DGAF tone.

I'm currently listening to Sue Klebold's memoir, in the wake of another one of what are at this point almost weekly mass shootings in the U.S. Klebold's account is honest and raw, and still has the power to make an incredible impact 18 years after the Columbine shooting. She writes with unflinching sincerity that demonstrates not just how much she's processed in that time period but also how much we can learn through empathy and compassion.

I'm having more fun on this Friday night than should even be legal. There's nothing quite like reading #geography #spaceandplace #theory surrounded by three cats to make you feel like an old lady. #academic

I want to like this and think I really would have at 15 but now I just want to throttle everyone in this book. Someone call CPS, tell Park to stop telling girls to smile more, and take everyone to a parenting class.

There is also some really weird racial stuff going on here that comes across incredibly gross in the #audiobook. I'm listening on my #overdrive app and hoping the second half includes some karma and realizations for people.

This book is so spooky in such a subtle way.

It's also completely gorgeous. I'm intrigued by the half illustration, half diary delivery and trying not to overthink it in case I ruin it for myself.

This Pulitzer Prize winner was one of the best plays I've read in a while. I especially appreciated the confluence of space, between the online and the physical spaces characters inhabit.

My current commute #audiobook is one I missed in elementary school somehow.

I know, people who haven't read this yet, it's tempting. Trust me, it's not worth it.

I don't have the outrage that others seem to about "Atticus being ruined." I'm disappointed about the disservice this does to Lee. It's not good. It's not "a first draft" as those who underestimate how many drafts writing a book takes said, but it is clearly not meant for widespread readership.

Reese Witherspoon's narration couldn't even save this for me.

I've been slacking on my Litsy. I finished this a couple weeks ago in a single day. Listening to Fisher in my car was mentally healing after the past couple tragedy filled months.

Strongly recommended for Star Wars people, those struggling with imposters syndrome, those needing multiple belly laughs, and anyone grieving who doesn't want a book about grief.

I was hooked on this in the first five minutes. Melanie's story is engrossing and tragic and (pure speculation because I'm not that far in yet) about to get freaking real.

Doing some rainy day listening to Girl in Pieces, a recommendation from my bff. So far I'm digging it but it is super heavy and deals deeply with suicide and self harm. It's a fitting read for the spring showers but I'm going to have to take an emotional break from it for the moment.

I made it three quarters of the way through this ebook and couldn't finish it. The writing was poetic and I even cared about the characters and plot but this dragged on much too long. If anything this felt like an editorial failure. I hate camping this a bail because I was so close to finishing, but it wasn't even working well enough as my before bed reading to finish.

I finally got to finish a novel audiobook after several weeks of nonfiction. It feels strange to call this satire "lighter" than what I've been reading lately, but there were several times I cracked up laughing in my car. SEVERAL. Bonus of the audiobook is listening to Liz from Gilmore Girls read to you and getting to hear actual singing during the Christmas concert scene.

I started this audiobook yesterday while cleaning out my parents' old kitchen and boxing items to take to dad's new/old house. It felt like the perfect soundtrack to the Draino, dirt water tsunami that soaked my boots and pants after the pipes came disconnected and flooded the area rug. Pretty sure Jenny Lawson would be proud to help me cry laugh while boxing up two year old gas bills and mismatched dinnerware.

I finished Shrill yesterday on the drive between my dad's current house and the house we are trying to clear out so he can sell it. I'm not sure if it's coincidental that everything I'm listening to right now has reference to authors' parents' deaths, but I'm thinking I need something a bit lighter. Let's work on that feminist memoirs/essays. Less parent death.

This was equal parts beautiful tribute, caustic burn, and emotional explosion. This #audiobook made me sob ugly tears in my car at 7 a.m. This audiobook made me want to never take a cab in New York. This audiobook made me want to call everyone who has ever been my best friend and ask them about how their parents are doing. This audiobook made me want to eat raw oysters and speak to someone whose language I don't understand and hug firefighters.

"...who we are is where we are from...Our bodies, like compasses, still know the way" (208).

Miranda's book is funny AND sincere about #storytelling as pain and healing.

"I think that's the visceral response of the human body to inescapable pain: forget about it" (196). Miranda offers us an alternative: talk about it. Share those stories and laugh about them and cry about them and theorize them. As Thomas King says, we are all made of stories.

I wanted to get into this, but even Barrymore talking to me didn't get this book going for me. There isn't so much insight here as much as there's justification and explanation of childhood and adolescent stories from her life.

Bartoletti, in the conclusion of Hitler Youth, asks if a despot like Hitler could rise to power again on the backs of young people. She notes only the youth of today could answer that question and asks us to consider, "What are you willing to do to prevent that a shadow from falling over you and others?"

On people that write in library books: maybe fucking don't.

Switching from rhetorical theory to literary criticism has my brain doing flips. I can appreciate the idea of meta responses here though (e.g. feeling guilty about feeling jealous).

My current commute #audiobook is Henry Louis Gates' In Search of Our Roots. I always seem to course emotional books to listen to on the drive.

So far, I think Tom Joyner's segment and Maya Angelo's have been my favorites. I like this audiobook because it's broken into smaller digestible sections that work well for my drive. I can get through a segment a day at least.

I'm reading Coleman's novel on this snowy afternoon. Coleman's own stay at a mental institution after giving birth to her son in 1924 inspired the story.

Sometimes I add books to my wish list in Overdrive and forget why. This has been a nice surprise. Listening to the quiet bravery of Antonina and Jan is inspiring but this story never makes light of their situation or idealizes their actions in the Polish resistance.
