The Blackbird Season
The Blackbird Season: A Novel | Kate Moretti
Known for novels featuring great pacing and true surprises (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) and nerve-shattering suspense (Heather Gudenkauf, New York Time bestselling author), New York Times bestselling author Kate Morettis latest is the story of a scandal-torn Pennsylvania town and the aftermath of a troubled girl gone missing. Where did they come from? Why did they fall? The question would be asked a thousand times Until, of course, more important question arose, at which time everyone promptly forgot that a thousand birds fell on the town of Mount Oanoke at all. In a quiet Pennsylvania town, a thousand dead starlings fall onto a high school baseball field, unleashing a horrifying and unexpected chain of events that will rock the close-knit community. Beloved baseball coach and teacher Nate Winters and his wife, Alicia, are well respected throughout town. That is, until one of the many reporters investigating the bizarre bird phenomenon catches Nate embracing a wayward student, Lucia Hamm, in front of a sleazy motel. Lucia soon buoys the scandal by claiming that she and Nate are engaged in an affair, throwing the town into an uproarand leaving Alicia to wonder if her husband has a second life. And when Lucia suddenly disappears, the police only to have one suspect: Nate. Nates coworker and sole supporter, Bridget Harris, Lucias creative writing teacher, is determined to prove his innocence. She has Lucias class journal, and while some of the entries appear particularly damning to Nates case, others just dont add up. Bridget knows the key to Nates exoneration and the truth of Lucias disappearance lie within the walls of the school and in the pages of that journal. Told from the alternating points of view of Alicia, Nate, Lucia, and Bridget, The Blackbird Season is a haunting, psychologically nuanced suspense, filled with Kate Morettis signature chillingly satisfying (Publishers Weekly) twists and turns.

I was thinking about a lot of the books I have read in the last few years and it occurred to me that there seems to be a new trend in storytelling. Is it just me or does it seem that a lot of writers create characters that are unlikeable? I have always loved the feeling of falling in love with characters or identifying with them and caring about what happens to them. Closing the book and being sad because I will miss them. Continued in comments..

Megabooks Yes, it does seem like there are more unlikable characters. 5y
DeeLew But lately I have read several books where I either really disliked the characters or I was indifferent to what happened to them (as is the case in the tagged book). Is this a thing? Creating unlikeable characters with no few, if any redeeming qualities? Or have I become jaded? 🤔 5y
DeeLew @Megabooks I thought it was just me. Lol 5y

This book is just okay so far. It is definitely a page turner but the characters are mostly unlikeable. I‘m hoping it gets better. It gets mixed reviews so we will see. In the meantime I am enjoying a beautiful first day of my staycation reading outside. ☀️🌸🍹🌳🌸📚

Nate Winters is a teacher and he is accused of having an affair with a student, Lucia Hamm. When Lucia goes missing, all eyes are on Nate as the suspect. Did he have a hand in her disappearance or is he being set up?

I enjoyed this book. I found it on the library shelf and immediately picked it up. I kept wanting more and more. It was very good!

A page-turning mystery set in a small town in Pennsylvania, this is a solid whodunnit with a cast of engaging characters. Moretti gives an insightful glance into decaying small town life and the long-reaching repercussions when most of the town's inhabitants lose their livelihood.

It's #caturday so I'm hanging with the kids. It's still winter in Ohio so we're also under a blanket.

This book did not turn into the magical realism or fantasy driven thriller I wanted it to. It was ok but not worth the time I spent on it.

Slow burn mystery about Lucia, a high school girl who goes missing, and whether or not her teacher Nate Winters had anything to do with it. Did not expect the ending.

Gissy I want that! Let In case my match from #secretsantagoespostal is reading or stalking ☺️ 7y

Dysfunctional characters who make lots of poor decisions combined with a very unsettling atmosphere made for a creepy page-turner of a read.

If you enjoy digging into the lives of folks and their emotions along with a lot of questionable choices, THE BLACKBIRD SEASON should be a good read for you.

Let me know what you think of this book if you have read it.

This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher and Net Galley in return for an honest review.

This book isn't so much about the issue of blackbirds falling from the sky as it is the disappearance of high school student Lucia and whether her teacher Nate Winters had anything to do with it. Suspenseful from the start; never lets up ✔️ I didn't know who did it and why until the end ✔️ The characters' relationships are excellently awkward ✔️Nate's frustrated, weary wife's POVs were my favorite ✔️ Story is not linear-the timeline was confusing.

I'm having to adjust my expectations with this one: I expected something a little bit spooky because of the birds falling from the sky (birds can be so creepy!). I'm think I'm far enough into this that I should feel creeped out if this is a creepy book. There is suspense here, but it just isn't what I was expecting. I'm pushing forward, but I'm reading it differently now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

• So, I start back at uni next week which means one week left of playing and cuddling the days away none-stop with my little princess. The only downside to studying 🙁So I'm going to take an hiatus from blogging and bookstagram during this week so I can make the most of it. I'll still be reading, but all reviews and such will not be posted until I return in a weeks time. 🍂#crimefiction #crimethriller #book #booklover #bookblogger #bibliophile

Reading now. :) My first book by Kate Moretti. I think I am in for a treat. :) I am only 4% in, and it is good. Have you read this book or any of her books?

Jess7 I read this one. It was a fast paced psychological thriller but the ending was so far-fetched to me that I couldn't rate it above a 3-3.5. That being said I would read another of her books so let me know how The BlackBird Season is 7y

Loved the complicated dynamics between the two sets of characters & how we were never sure who to trust. The POV switched btw several characters, but even though you‘re in these different characters‘ heads, you still get the sense that you might only be hearing the stories they tell themselves. Add in some strange falling birds, a creepy abandoned paper mill, & an alleged witch, and you‘ve got an engrossing mystery that I couldn‘t put down.

Cinfhen Nice review 8y
