Shrill
Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman | Lindy West
'Lindy West is an essential (and hilarious) voice for women. Her talent and bravery have made the Internet a place I actually want to be.' Lena Dunham'For me, Lindy West is part of the Lady Mount Rushmore that includes Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler.' Caitlin MoranGuardian columnist Lindy West wasn't always loud. It's difficult to believe she was once a nerdy, terror-stricken teen who wanted nothing more than to be invisible. Fortunately for women everywhere, along the road she found her voice - and how she found it! That cripplingly shy girl, who refused to make a sound, grew up to be one of the loudest, shrillest, most fearless feminazis on the internet, making a living speaking up for what's right instead of what's 'cool'.In Shrill, Lindy recounts how she went from being the butt of people's jokes, to telling her own brand of jokes - ones that come with a meaningful agenda and aren't at someone else's expense. She reveals the obstacles and misogyny she's had to overcome to make herself heard, in a society that doesn't believe women (especially fat women and feminists) can ever be funny. A catalyst for conversation, West also addresses some of the most burning issues of popular culture today, taking a frank and provocative look at social injustice, racism, fat-shaming, twitter-trolling and even rape culture, unpicking the bullshit and calling out unpalatable truths with conviction, intelligence and a large dose of her trademark black humour.

One of my favorite quotes from Lindy West. I am outdoorsy and fat and I think of this almost every time I complete a long hike or make it to a mountaintop. #weight #QuotsyJan20

5🌟West holds nothing back! She is raw and open about her body, from childhood into adulthood. She discusses her never ending battle with vicious and toxic internet Trolls. She talks about her love for stand up comedy. She opend up about the loss of her father, of traveling as a fat person, sexists bosses, internet writing, and addresses certain subjects like rape culture, fatphobia, abortions and misogyny with honesty and intelligence.

I found Shrill so entertaining, funny, comforting, and validating to read, it would be easy to dismiss its importance. Shrill is Lindy West‘s debut collection of autobiographical essays and the basis for the Hulu series starring Aidy Bryant. Just like its author, this book is loud in all the best ways, its ferocity and humor casting out trolls and carving out a space for women‘s voices and bodies at the volume of their choosing.

Hooked_on_books One of my favorites. I got to meet her and get my copy signed and I fangirled all over her. She‘s amazing in person. 2mo

Zoes_Human This makes me wonder if Lindy West is a social and outgoing person. I love being alone, and my spouse and I deeply value about one another that we can be alone together in the same space. The ability to be alone together is precious for folks like us. 2mo

#MOvember #expressyourself makes me think of the book, though I‘ve not read it. In this memoir/collection of essays with humour and fierce writing, Lindy West talks about issues facing our culture such as sexism, misogyny, fat acceptance, reproductive rights, and more.

There's so much to commend West on for just putting down on paper which might not gel with everyone. I can see a lot of people taking offense to somethings she says but at the end of the day these are opinions ans a lot that again I've dealt with and resonated with so thanks Lindy for having the guts to write it down.

Ok...so this was another extremely important book. So difficult to listen to (although it IS funny at times) but necessary. The last essay, about the troll who impersonated her dead dad, I'd heard before, and it was no less powerful the second time.

Now I need a really fictiony escapist novel to give myself a break from Important Books. 🙂

So.. I was stuck in a flood and took 4 hours to get home.

It was okay. Like I mentioned it was very much like Hunger and Not that Bad. I mean I get how women, other than “perfect” body size gets mistreated. It sucks. People suck.

I heard the audio so it was the author reading it. You could her her pain and frustration. It just is sad too many women have these stories.

This feels a lot like Hunger- Roxane Gay.

Not that I don‘t like it but it‘s seems like I‘ve already heard all this before.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve been wanting to read this one for a while—unfortunately, so did everyone else in my library system. But, I finally got it and it was worth the wait! I will say that it wasn‘t quite what I was expecting after watching the series. It‘s bolder in many ways, and definitely thought provoking. As an essay collection, it‘s good for those who may not have long stretches of time to devote to reading.

Can‘t recommend this enough. It was on my list before the Hulu show, but the show definitely prompted me to read it and didn‘t steer me astray. I could relate so much to many parts and Lindy West gives me some hope for our future 👏👏 We need more voices like hers!

I picked this book up because my sister told me to watch the show on Hulu, and it was floundering on my TBR. I was laughing from the opening lines, but that laughter quickly turned into a sort of wry acceptance that this is not funny ha-ha, but sometimes-humor-is-the-only-way-through funny. With her deep dive into fatness, I couldn‘t help but contrast it with Hunger by Roxane Gay, which is not funny-anything, but the themes are similar.

I really appreciate Lindy West‘s candor and ability to be so raw in her writing. At times, this book was funny and there were other points where it was honest and hard and very relatable. She talks about being a woman and image and fighting to break through in a career that is dominated by men. I found this to be very inspiring and well written. Definitely worth reading.

My sister was telling me about this new show on Hulu called Shrill and it sounded so familiar to me. Lo and behold, it‘s been floundering on my TBR for months. Not anymore! Also, I find it impossible to check out JUST one book from the library. Wasn‘t That a Time is an compelling-sounding book about Pete Seeger and The Weavers during the political hot mess of the 60s. I also put Time Bandit on hold, thanks to that tip from @bookishkris !

This is great & I‘m so glad I read it shortly after reading Good & Mad. These books have caused me to look not only at myself but at how I‘ve judged other women for being strong, mad, fat, shrill, & all the other labels that get thrown out there as unacceptable for a woman. Lindy does a great job of firing her reader up & giving no quarter while still remaining true & vulnerable. A great read!
