Changed perspective makes all the difference. I‘ve felt sorry for Penelope ever since I read a kids version of Odysseus‘ homecoming as a child. She seemed like a statue—all goodness and no definition. Atwood‘s retelling gives Penelope all the complex contours of a developed character. Book two of the #ReadingWomenChallenge

Really excellent overview on the history of historiography on the British Empire. I may be behind in writing, but I'm glad I took the time to read this.

I'd heard so much about this book that I almost reluctantly read it out of peer pressure. Let me tell you, I am now on the praise wagon. It truly is stunning. Beautifully told. And worth being pressured into reading.

Childhood is magic. There was nothing I wanted more as a child than to sleep under the stars and build fires at my little camp. I love reading Ransome because he reminds me of the two childhoods I had: the real one of adventures and exploration and the imagined one in which I went beyond the confines of my 13 mi^2 island. Both were magical.
