I am back!!! And recently finished what I‘m sure will be my favorite book of 2018. 😍

julesG Okay, I need to ask. Do you think the merman was real, or was her mind playing tricks on her? 6y
samesfoley @julesG That‘s such a hard question! I think he was real, mostly because I love pretending fantasy elements are real, but I think an extremely strong case can be made for him not being real. 6y
julesG I guess both works. I think he was real. Anyway, a very weird book. 😉 6y

I‘ve loved everything I‘ve read by Stiefvater, so I was really looking forward to this. The writing was magnificent, as usual, but I just didn‘t feel very invested in the story until the last third of the book. Definitely worth a shot, but not quite my thing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

GondorGirl I felt much the same way... It took awhile to get invested in the story, but once I did it was enjoyable. 7y
samesfoley @GondorGirl Yes, exactly! Definitely kind of a slow burner, plot-wise 7y

I went into this hoping it would be good, but not expecting a lot and it blew me away. This is one of those books that I couldn't even stop to take notes during because I was so enthralled. I had to put it down a few times just to breathe. I adored this story every step of the way, but the end wrecked me. I had predicted half of the twist, but didn't see the other half coming. I'm really intrigued to see how Lu continues this series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Priestdaddy: A Memoir | Patricia Lockwood
post image
Pickpick

I didn't know what to expect in picking up this book, but Patricia Lockwood's writing blew me away from the start. She manages to tackle a variety of difficult topics with grace and humor. As an aspiring writer, I found myself inspired by Lockwood, who carries a notebook with her everywhere she goes, jotting down the oddities that escape from her parents' mouths. Definitely a good read, I'm glad I got my hands on it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There's not much I can say about this that hasn't already been said. Leigh Bardugo builds an incredible world and introduces us to a (mostly) lovable cast of characters. I have not felt this immersed in a book in ages. I cannot wait to read the sequel and you better believe I'm adding the rest of Bardugo's books to my TBR. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Wild Girls | Pat Murphy

This is a beautifully written story about two middle school girls who develop a deep friendship with each other while learning lessons about life, interpersonal relationships, and writing. The characters are complex and relatable, the story is soft and heartwarming (although some deep issues are mentioned), and the lessons are applicable to everyone. I cannot recommend this book enough! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This just didn't push the right buttons for me. I think my problem with it was that the plot moved too quickly and I was just extremely confused. I would probably enjoy it a lot more as a reread, maybe I'l pick it up again around Halloween. I'll definitely keep my eye out for Volume 2. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall meh. There are some really compelling parts and the writing is good, but the casual homophobia was super off-putting and I'm sick to death of the catty teenage girl trope. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall somewhat interesting, but the subject of the book makes a lot of sexist comments and a handful of racist comments as well. It began to drag on after a bit and felt voyeuristic, using the real names of the deceased and revealing intimate information about them and their families. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

overlyattachedreader I found this book fascinating, but you're so right about its flaws. (The 300lb remark, implying the way a man died was strange because his girlfriend was so beautiful, etc.) I'm wondering how the final edition will look. 7y

Did the author say "hmm, do you think I can find the most sexist, fat-shamey, racist thing to include in this book?" and then proceed to do it?? This is horrifying and an unnecessary inclusion.

Reading this book mainly so I can see if it's as stalkery if it sounds so I can write a review about that and it starts out with jokes about fetal alcohol syndrome. :/ I'm gonna give it another chance but I may have to DNF.

This is the final book in the Queen of the Tearling trilogy and I really enjoyed it! I didn't like the first very much, but loved the second, and really liked the third! I thought the plot progression was interesting, although I got confused at times, and I love the characters. I thought it was really nice to see more of the background of the Tearling. I'd definitely recommend this trilogy to fans of fantasy stories.

The three star rating is based on my personal enjoyment of the read, not an objective scale. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who has read The Stranger by Camus. It provides a fascinating contrast and goes to show that there are many sides to every story. I struggled a bit with the meandering, rambling way it was written, but it served a purpose and it was well-done overall. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was my second read and I didn't like it nearly as much as I did the first time.

The main character, Talia, was kind of a Mary Sue the main romance felt forced and random; the pacing of the story itself was weird. On the plus side, the world-building was good, the concept was really interesting, and there were several women loving women!!! It wasn't completely without its merits, but just wasn't really an enjoyable read for me.

Here are my June 2017 books! My favorite of the month was Everything, Everything. I'll post my tentative July TBR later. You can find my full June wrap-up post and my review at http://samesfoley.wordpress.com (wrap-up post to be published at 11am EST, y'all are getting a sneak peak!!)

maximoffs Curious why you didn't like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! I haven't read it yet but you're the first person I've seen who wasn't a fan (edited) 7y
samesfoley @steverogers I wrote a lengthy review but the TL;DR is that the characters were boring to me, it began with 200 dry pages of exposition, every woman wanted to sleep with the main character (why), and I felt that sexual assault was used mostly for shock value. I almost DNFed it but was too far in to warrant giving up. 7y
actualdisneyprincess True story: I put down Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after about fifteen pages because I just didn't care. I figured there was something wrong with me since everyone kept saying "omg you have to read this!!!!" so I'm glad to know you felt the same way!! 7y

samesfoley @actualdisneyprincess I'm so glad you had the foresight so stop it so early!! I almost wish I hadn't read it all, but I'm also glad I know for sure that it's NOT for me. 7y
actualdisneyprincess @samesfoley usually I muddle through things even when I'm not feeling them (coughGoneGirlcough), but for whatever reason, I just couldn't do it with that one! Sometimes I think I might try again, but then I realize how many other things there are that I really want to read. 😂 7y
samesfoley @actualdisneyprincess You didn't like Gone Girl???? I haven't read it yet! 7y
actualdisneyprincess @samesfoley I H A T E D it. It took me two frickin' years to read it, and by that point, I felt like I had spent way too much time on it to give up, even though I loathed both characters SO MUCH and really didn't care what happened to either of them. 🙄 7y
samesfoley @actualdisneyprincess Omg that's good to know!! I've heard only positive things so far 7y
