My Best Friend's Exorcism
My Best Friend's Exorcism: A Novel | Grady Hendrix
Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act . . . different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes theres only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

This might by my favorite Hendrix book now. And as of reading it, I‘ve officially read all of his novels.

He‘s not the most serious writer, but I really enjoy his wild ride of a story, the characters, and especially the female friendships in this one. Not to mention the plethora of 80‘s nostalgia! 📼🛼💋🦉

AmyG He has a wonderful imagination. I really enjoy his books. 2mo

15/22 This was free on audible so I gave it a go and I enjoyed it. Not my strongest pick, but the story kept moving and I did feel invested in the characters. It was dark and silly and there were definitely plot holes, overall it kept me entertained 3⭐️ #roadtripUSA2022 #southcarolina

guidosophia @AmandaBlaze i definitely need to read more! do you have any recommendations? 2mo
AmandaBlaze @guidosophia Hendrix‘s Final Girl Support Club and his Southern Book Club‘s Guide to Slaying Vampires are good. So is almost anything by Neil Gaiman. 2mo

New Favorite author! I ended 2021 with The Southern Book clubs guide to slaying vampires it was funny at times, scary and had some disgusting moments and some heart pounding moments but I loved every bit of it!

Nute I have purchased all of his books, but I have yet to read any of them. In the store I am gung-ho, but I never seem to reach for them once I get home. Maybe I‘m in need of guidance…which one do you recommend as the intro to his work? 4mo
Booksarelifeaddict @Nute I would start off with My Best friends exorcism it kinda sets the path for the others in my opinion but they are all stand alones 4mo

I have to give Hendrix credit: he can certainly write a weird, cliche-filled story that I can never put down. This is an amazing mash-up of horror, humour and the 80s.

Hendrix has the talent of making the reader completely horrified, but snorting with laughter at the same time. It makes one feel sort of deranged, which I‘m sure he‘d enjoy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Booksarelifeaddict I have to agree! I also loved The southern book clubs guide to slaying vampires! 4mo

🎧 There‘s a good chunk at the end but mostly a coming of age story with an exorcism?

Abby & Gretchen are BFFs, 1 from each side of the tracks. If you like the 80‘s you‘ll get plenty of nostalgia, even the chapter titles are 80‘s song titles. The last 30% is mostly supernatural horror then it returns to nostalgia.

It‘s about 2 friends, their 75 year friendship & their lives that were interrupted by possession. Quick read! Liked it!

This book was okay.. It was in the horror genre but it wasn't scary at all. The first 70% of this book read as a drama/mean girls type of book. And the part that was suppose to be scary, I didn't think it was scary at all. I guess I ended up not liking this book as much because I thought it was going to be way more scary. But it's like a teen 80s book. 2/5 stars

Does anyone know if this one is gory? I really like Hendrix's writing and want to try this one, but The Final Girl Support Group and the end of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires was a bit much for me.

This was all over Litsy last October, and I was obsessed with the cover art, so this year I finally read it for myself, and it pretty much lived up to the cover image. Reading this was like watching an 80s B-movie complete with illustrations of flyers and magazine adds sprinkled throughout to set the mood.

I graduated from high school in the 80‘s, so this book was right up my alley! I loved the inclusion of so much 80‘s culture, such as naming each chapter after a song and references to hairstyles and clothing. The whole possession thing did have some creepy moments, but the overall mood of the book was nostalgic and fun.

Wow! I couldn‘t put this book down! VERY suspenseful!! A teenage girl realizes that her best friend has been possessed and has the fight of her life to try to save her. Quite a rollercoaster ride! I was a teen in the 80‘s, too, so I loved all the retro details.

I‘ve read Horrorstor and loved it, and already have my copy of the Southern Book Club‘s Guide ready to go. This is a must-read author for me!

First book of the month finished last night 👊👊

This was fun to listen to. Loved the references and it was equally engaging and corny as hell. Some parts were unnecessary (Good Boy Max 😭) but for the most part it was hard to put down.

First book for #ListenLitten and also #BookspinBingo and #14Books14Weeks2021 and hits the Best Friends prompt for the themed reads! 8 listening hours so that's 28 points if my math is right? @aperfectmjk

Good Book. I‘ll give it 4 Stars. If you love/loved the 80s and love the movie “the exorcist”, then this is the right book for you! Summary of this book: 2 friends, growing up in the 80s until that one fateful day, one of them has a demon occupying her body. And everything goes south from there. Fast. The other friend tries to save her. But will she be able to save her?

Love Grady Hendrix! He did a surprisingly great job at describing what it‘s like being a teenage girl. Tons of nostalgia and a relatable best friend story! Everyone needs a friend that would see you through an exorcism.

I can't even begin to articulate the feels. It's visceral & raw, yet sometimes tenderly human & heartbreaking
Our heroine has to piece together increasingly disturbing events happening around her best friend as the community is slowly turned against her.
Not King & Hill's In the Tall Grass, but this ain't for the faint of heart either. The climax is a relentless gauntlet, but I promise it's worth it.

Overall Rating 4¼⭐ | Narration 😐 = Okay
That was some exorcism...did it stray into cheesiness, why yes, it did. It did indeed...but it was the ‘80s, and they were super-cheesy sometimes. Without outright giving away my age, I will say that this book captures that age quite well...I know because I lived through it. Although I was never into Phil Collins quite that much...I was more of Def Leppard kind of girl. Hair Bands were my jam. ⬇

AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH I personally would have invoked Joe Elliot and Jon Bon Jovi and maybe even a little Nikki Sixx...scratch that, Mick Mars would actually scare anything, human or demon, away. 1y

Fun fact: This is the first book I‘ve finished after moving to South Korea! I read this for the horror aspect and 80s nostalgia, but what stuck with me is how accurately Hendrix was able to capture female friendship. What was really scary is how well he portrayed the excruciating time that is being a teenage girl.

One word review - awesome

I loved everything about this book from the chapter titles to the last sentence.

Grady perfectly captures the unique uneasiness of being on the outside as a teenage girl faced with bitchiness on a daily basis.

I loved the 80s references and most of all I love the friendship.

1. I can't remember the last time I was really scared reading a book but this one was a little rough. Not a fan of possessions.
2. For 1, Demons and 2 the poor MC was so on her own. Her family was totally useless in helping her.
3. Woodie Harrelson should be in every one🤣
4. Vampires. I asked for no Vampires on the survey but I love them, the scary kind and am totally open to any non cheezy, hardcore vampire book😬
5. Pins, gnomes, snowglobes
