The Robber Bride
The Robber Bride | Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is inspired by "The Robber Bridegroom," a wonderfully grisly tale from the Brothers Grimm in which an evil groom lures three maidens into his lair and devours them, one by one. But in her version, Atwood brilliantly recasts the monster as Zenia, a villainess of demonic proportions, and sets her loose in the lives of three friends, Tony, Charis, and Roz. All three "have lost men, spirit, money, and time to their old college acquaintance, Zenia. At various times, and in various emotional disguises, Zenia has insinuated her way into their lives and practically demolished them. To Tony, who almost lost her husband and jeopardized her academic career, Zenia is 'a lurking enemycommando.' To Roz, who did lose her husband and almost her magazine, Zenia is 'a cold and treacherous bitch.' To Charis, who lost a boyfriend, quarts of vegetable juice and some pet chickens, Zenia is a kind of zombie, maybe 'soulless'" (Lorrie Moore, New York Times BookReview). In love and war, illusion and deceit, Zenia's subterranean malevolence takes us deep into her enemies' pasts. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I love Margaret Atwood ❤ This is a retelling of the feminist variety. The main characters are so very well drawn that you feel like you know them or you want to. 4.5 ⭐s

Greatly enjoyed reading this! The book was a bit long; however, I never got bored. The writing is phenomenal. The writing makes it feel as if you are watching the story unfold right in front of you. I love the great uses of metaphors and similes. There are also many good points on feminism. I found the story to be unique and engaging. This was my 3rd Margaret Atwood book and I look forward to reading more of them!

Come-read-with-me @ilyssa.g Alias Grace was one of my favourites! 3y
ilyssa.g @Come-read-with-me I have to read that one soon! 3y

Margaret Atwood is a master story teller and this novel is no exception in her mastery. It is a twist on the Grimm's Fairytale The Robber Bridegroom. The story concerns four women. The women had troubled backgrounds and poor taste in men and that thread brought me down for much of the story. I did enjoy the last third of the book more than the beginning. While the ending does bring it all together, it was not what I was looking for or expected.

Finished this novel from Atwood‘s backlog few days ago. About how three friends lives are changed after an old college classmate steals each of their husbands/boyfriends away from them. Not one of Atwood‘s best, but an enjoyable read.

July is almost over, do you still have time to read your #AuthorAMonth Margaret Atwood book? So far @ValerieAndBooks is in the lead for # read with two this month. I‘m going to tag those who I‘ve recorded finished books for here in the tag field, and others who expressed interest but I haven‘t seen reviews for yet in the comments.

Reminder that there will be a prize box for whoever reads the most overall in mid December. 😊📚

My favorite Atwood so far! The manipulative Zenia wreaks havoc in the lives and relationships of three other women (they all knew each other initially in college). Zenia opens up their psychological wounds (some readers may have triggers) and adds more.

This story will stay with me for a long time.

Thanks @Soubhiville for the #authoramonth challenge which got this one out of my TBR. Now I may have a book hangover for a while!

Also #1001Books

Suet624 I've never asked about the 1001 books. Is that list from Peter Boxall's book? Can you provide me with a link? 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Suet624 Yes, Peter Boxall. I have the 2015 edition, a newer one came out in 2018. The lists change slightly with each edition. I use the app (I think it's for Apple only though) to keep track. I found this list that combines all the books from all the editions : https://www.listchallenges.com/1001-books-you-must-read-2018

I know I'll never get to them all but it's fun trying 😂
5y
Suet624 Thank you! I‘ll check it out. 5y
ValerieAndBooks Also @Suet624 there seems to be several other formats of the #1001Books list online if you google -- there is one on goodreads (which I'm not a member of), for example. 5y

It‘s a little bit of a slow starter, but stick with it and it will have you on tenterhooks, as Roz‘s mother would say. The women were all powerful, each in her own way. And likewise vulnerable. No really decent men. Boyce was witty at first but soon became an annoying caricature. But that was OK because this is a story of women, and their inner selves were more important than their outer relationships. Zenia was the mirror of those selves, ⬇️

Lcsmcat sometimes true and sometimes distorted. Atwood never disappoints. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (edited) 5y

I finally read this Atwood to fill a prompt ,so glad I did.Her characters,Rox,Charis ,& Tony women who met in college are very different but have stayed friends over the years.Atwood details their lives so deeply the reader feels they know them. The mercurial Zenia has betrayed them all at one time or another. It fills the fairy tale retelling for the #Booked2019 prompt.A wonderful read about friendship ,betrayal,w/ insights re:the human condition

I loved this book so much. It delivers tons of truth about being a girl, a woman, a daughter, a partner, a mother - all within an absorbing story/history of three friends (each of whom I adored) and their supervillain of a shared frenemy. Typically delicious Atwood writing, including plenty of dark humor. ❤️

Roz, Tony and Charis share their hatred, anger towards the fourth woman - Zenia. She is beautiful, charismatic, smart, ruthless, evil and she use them shamelessly. Very readable, well paced, intense story, good characterization with interesting narrative voices ... but I have some minor complaints about the way Atwood brings to the end some backstories.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Time to start reading what I‘ll be teaching.

Reading to teach, for me, is FAR different than reading for pleasure. While I do love teaching literature and books, I enjoy being able to “let go” and just read a book without analyzing it too much.
