Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson | Jeff Guinn
The New York Times bestselling, authoritative account of the life of Charles Manson, filled with surprising new information and previously unpublished photographs: A riveting, almost Dickensian narrativefour stars (People).More than forty years ago Charles Manson and his mostly female commune killed nine people, among them the pregnant actress Sharon Tate. It was the culmination of a criminal career that author Jeff Guinn traces back to Mansons childhood. Guinn interviewed Mansons sister and cousin, neither of whom had ever previously cooperated with an author. Childhood friends, cellmates, and even some members of the Manson family have provided new information about Mansons life. Guinn has made discoveries about the night of the Tate murders, answering unresolved questions, such as why one person near the scene of the crime was spared. Manson puts the killer in the context of the turbulent late sixties, an era of race riots and street protests when authority in all its forms was under siege. Guinn shows us how Manson created and refined his message to fit the times, persuading confused young women (and a few men) that he had the solutions to their problems. At the same time he used them to pursue his long-standing musical ambitions. His frustrated ambitions, combined with his bizarre race-war obsession, would have lethal consequences. Guinns book is a tour de force of a biographyManson stands as a definitive work: important for students of criminology, human behavior, popular culture, music, psychopathology, and sociopathologyand compulsively readable (Ann Rule, The New York Times Book Review).

#JealousGuy | I got distracted and forgot to post yesterday‘s prompt. 😕 Here‘s another fantastic Jeff Guinn biography.

#PsychoKiller
I couldn‘t finish this book. Don‘t get me wrong - this is a well written book - but Manson‘s life is disturbing,
devastating, super sad and well this book is absolute despair. I had to stop reading every so often and look up pictures of puppies and bunnies. Maybe if I‘m in a different headspace I may try to finish... but my heart can‘t take this right now.
#31daysofnonfiction

Cinfhen Our bookclub read this account. Maybe it will be easier to digest as it‘s more of a police procedural and trial book but still focuses on the Manson case. It was really well done 5y
Cinfhen And great choice👍🏻 5y
britt_brooke I love Jeff Guinn‘s writing, but the details of the Manson murders are difficult to get through. 5y
Christinak @britt_brooke I didn‘t get to the murders it‘s his general life that is so sad 5y

Pick Pick Pick! So fascinating to read about Manson‘s life and how/why things turned out the way they did..

The part about Sharon Tate was truely heartbreaking 😓

“Charlie was booked as “MANSON, CHARLES M., AKA JESUS CHRIST, GOD.”

Another fabulous book from Jeff Guinn! So detailed, yet very readable. The Family is fascinating, but damn, it was all truly insane and absolutely gruesome. If you devoured Helter Skelter, definitely read this one, too, if you haven‘t already. The audio is very well done.

AmyG I liked this book alot. If you are interested in Manson and the murders....this is a must read. (edited) 6y
monkeygirlsmama I read Helter Skelter ages ago. Will have to stack this one. 6y
Califlamingo Definitely going to read (or listen) to this one. I'm almost done with the Bonnie and Clyde book so this may be next. 6y

britt_brooke @AmyG Agree! Have you read any others? I recently picked up Dianne Lake‘s book, but haven‘t read it yet. Think I might read it next: 6y
britt_brooke @monkeygirlsmama 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
britt_brooke @Califlamingo I listened to Bonnie & Clyde earlier this month. So good! Have you read The Road to Jonestown? It was the first Guinn book I read. Absolutely gripping. 6y
Califlamingo @britt_brooke I haven't read that but will put it on my list. I may have found a new favorite author! 6y
britt_brooke @Califlamingo Same here! His books are so good. He has a way of presenting intricate details, but in an entertaining way. Not at all boring. He has one about the OK Corral, but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m not as interested in the topic, but I‘m sure I‘ll get to it eventually. (edited) 6y
Califlamingo @britt_brooke another for my list! I love that period and have visited the OK Corral. I like that he gives the facts in his story but also makes it almost as if you know the subjects. 6y
APLitlife Loved Helter Skelter!! 6y
britt_brooke @Califlamingo Oh, interesting! I know very little about it. 6y
britt_brooke @APLitlife Me too. Totally captivating! 6y
AmyG @britt_brooke I haven‘t read anything else thay I remember. I want to read A Member of the Family, too. 6y
Frecks-Booklover4life After reading your review I used my audible credit to get this one! I trust you @britt_brooke , we seem to have the same taste! I‘ll start it soon! This guy has always been intriguing to me. 6y
britt_brooke @AmyG I started it a few minutes ago. The writing is very mediocre, but I think it‘s going to be an interesting read. 👍🏻 6y
britt_brooke @Frecks-Booklover4life Aw, thank you for trusting me! ☺️ Hope you enjoy! 6y

Also, no watches, calendars, eyeglasses ... but PLENTY of LSD, sex, and brainwashing.

CampbellTaraL @britt_brooke Calling him "Charlie" weirds me out as much as the twisted restriction list. 6y
LazyDays Just seems like a wild story someone made up. That's what so impactful about Manson. You cant help but wonder how could that have happened. 6y
britt_brooke @taraWritesSci Doesn‘t it?! The author says up front that he refers to him as Charlie throughout the book because that‘s what he went by during that time period. Still feels weird. 6y

Reviewsbylola This sounds about right. The last thing you want the people you‘re controlling to do would be to read books. 😂 But seriously, they had to have been SO BORED on that ranch!! 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Can‘t have people thinking for themselves, that‘s for sure! 🙃🤯 I can‘t really wrap my head around any of it, tbh, but this book is fantastic so far. Envelops you differently that Helter Skelter (which I loved). 6y

I‘ve been wanting to read this since finishing Guinn‘s Jim Jones book. Today seems like a good time to start, in light of Manson‘s passing a few hours ago. I very much doubt anyone will miss him. (On a related note: definitely listen to the You Must Remember This podcast series on Manson and Hollywood. Karina Longworth is amazing.)

#librarylove #somethingforsept I am so lucky to live in a city with one of the best libraries in the entire world (it really is!). The Harold Washington Library is a freaking wonderland that I plan entire days around. I used to be lucky enough to live 2 blocks away from it, but now I have to count on an uber trip home so I don't have to haul 15+ books on the el. So much love for this big, beautiful building.

Zelma Agreed! I loved ducking in there when I lived in Chicago. 8y

Hooked from the prologue. Dennis Wilson and his famous buddies bring a young Charles Manson to the Whiskey-a-Go-Go. Manson breaks away from the stars and cuts a rug on his own.

With so many false tales and exaggerated stories about Manson out there, it's refreshing to read one that is so meticulously researched. Guinn does a great job of telling the story with historical perspective, really allowing you to see how this happened.
