The Elegance of the Hedgehog
The Elegance of the Hedgehog | Muriel Barbery
Renee is the concierge of a grand Parisian apartment building, home to members of the great and the good. Over the years she has maintained her carefully constructed persona as someone reliable but totally uncultivated, in keeping, she feels, with society's expectations of what a concierge should be. But beneath this facade lies the real Renee: passionate about culture and the arts, and more knowledgeable in many ways than her employers with their outwardly successful but emotionally void lives. Down in her lodge, apart from weekly visits by her one friend Manuela, Renee lives resigned to her lonely lot with only her cat for company. Meanwhile, several floors up, twelve-year-old Paloma Josse is determined to avoid the pampered and vacuous future laid out for her, and decides to end her life on her thirteenth birthday. But unknown to them both, the sudden death of one of their privileged neighbours will dramatically alter their lives forever. By turn moving and hilarious, this unusual novel became the top-selling book in France in 2007 with sales of over 900,000 copies to-date.

It‘s hard for me to contextualize this book without a better understanding of French culture.

The book is built on the class tensions in an upper crust Paris apartment building. The narration alternates between an autodidact concierge and a precocious 12-year-old.

The concierge hides her intelligence until a new Japanese tenant finds her out and brings it to light.

If this sounds interesting, no spoilers 🤐 4⭐️

Paloma, a twelve-year-old genius is a talented and startlingly lucid child who has decided to end her life on the sixteenth of June, her thirteenth birthday. Until then she will continue behaving as everyone expects her to behave: a mediocre pre-teen high on adolescent subculture, a good but not an outstanding student, an obedient if obstinate daughter.

Chrissyreadit @wanderinglynn @jenniferw88 I‘m still unofficially doing it too- and tagging my #bfc BFF‘s anyway. I love the positive focus so much! This is the kind of novel that you either love or find completely irritating. I loved it. I loved the whole class portrait of the rich French upper class. Renée is a "concierge" for this upper class building with 6 or 8 appartments. She hides her culture, her intelligence, her thirst for knowledge behind her door, her television. She gives the tennants what they want, what they need to see in order for their lives to go on.

writerlibrarian Paloma is the 12 years old girl that is too intelligent, too knowing for her own good and plans to end it all on her 13th birthday because she doesn't find anything worth living for. Both Renée's and Paloma's lives are on a collision course and what happens when a charming Japanese man becomes a tennant is both wonderful and heart breaking. (edited) 4mo
writerlibrarian Barbery follows through her original intent and the reader ends up with some tears and a smile after finishing the novel. 4mo

Texreader The book sounds good, but also sounds like it could be a slow tedious read—which I cannot do. Is it? 4mo

Just finished my 1st book for WIT month. This was a remarkable story & the audio was sublime. I don‘t often get on with child voice actors, as the precociousness can be a bit much. But this was just the right level of haughtiness in both character‘s voices. If you like really brilliant, difficult women who go deep into observations of the world/ their lives- this may be a book for you. I love the mix of intellectual discourse & heart!

I think Renee the concierge might be considered a #mardybum ...and she definitely sometimes ‘had a face on her!‘
“On the outside she is covered in quills, a real fortress, but my gut feeling is that on the inside, she has the same simple refinement as the hedgehog: a deceptively indolent little creature, fiercely solitary--and terrible elegant. ”

I think Helen is to blame for the tagged one!

squirrelbrain Always #blamethesquirrel when it comes to hedgehog books! 🐿 🦔 🐿🦔 I may go for a walk to my charity shops this afternoon, if I can dodge the showers.... 8mo

squirrelbrain @BooknerdsLife @TrishB well I went to the charity shops (there‘s two within 15 minutes walk) but they didn‘t have anything exciting - just got one book for my Mum. (Like I needed any more books anyway!🤪) 8mo

Thank you, Helen! @squirrelbrain

It's arrived safely. I'm thinking about making it my reading material for when I'm on my "hedgehog mat" (acupuncture mat).

#LitsyReadingRetreat still busting my TBR ?

squirrelbrain Yay! Glad it arrived. I shall think of you, elegantly arranged on your hedgehog mat...! 9mo
julesG @squirrelbrain 😂😂😂 I'll reserve a few choice words for when I lie down. Just for you. 😁😉 9mo
julesG @squirrelbrain Enjoy your camping trip and soak up some sun. 9mo

What a beautiful book, although very sad. I‘m trying not to cry in Gladstone‘s Library.... but I‘m sure fellow Littens would understand!

The book has an unusual structure, with the MC‘s viewpoint interspersed with diary entries from another character, which is really effective.

I‘ve been so lucky with the books I chose to read during this #readingretreat - I‘ve loved all 3. ❤️

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 9mo
Lcsmcat I loved this book! And that‘s a beautiful cover, and one I hadn‘t seen before. 9mo
