The Likeness: A Novel | Tana French
The haunting follow up to the Edgar Award-winning debut In the WoodsTana French astonished critics and readers alike with her mesmerizing debut novel, In the Woods. Now both French and Detective Cassie Maddox return to unravel a case even more sinister and enigmatic than the first. Six months after the events of In the Woods, an urgent telephone call beckons Cassie to a grisly crime scene. The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl, but, more importantly, who is this girl? A disturbing tale of shifting identities, The Likeness firmly establishes Tana French as an important voice in suspense fiction. And look for French's other mysteries In the Woods, Faithful Place,Broken Harbor, andThe Secret Place for more of the Dublin Murder Squad.Tana French's newest novel,The Secret Place, will be published by Viking on September 2nd, 2014.

Mehso-so

I like French‘s writing but this one seemed too long and drawn out. I listened on audio, and I loved the accents, but it seemed to just go on and on. Interesting plot idea but a little far fetched as well, which made me not buy in 100% like I‘d hoped. Still, it‘s a pretty good story.

Cathythoughts She does go on and on 😬... but I love her books anyway ❤️ 2w

Not as good as the first one - dragged in the middle, however, her descriptive writing continues to be a her strength - started out strong but the story needed to progress a bit quicker to maintain the reader‘s interest

Lunch break reading! I read the first Dublin Murder Squad book last month and loved it. I'd planned to save this one for over Christmas break but then I watched the first episode of the new TV show and realized it was going to include the second book as well, so I treated myself to it now. Don't want to make my husband wait a whole month to keep watching the show!

A long book about an undercover female cop who resembles a stabbing victim. She goes under cover to try to ascertain who killed the murdered girl. The book is set in Ireland. The main protagonist is likeable and the situation she finds herself in is bizarre. Having said that I did enjoy it although at times it felt a little too strange.

Once i had accepted the premise of this the 2nd murder squad story i was totally absorbed in great characters and plotting (although i did feel it owed a lot to the secret history). Tana french has created a great series which i look fwd to continuing and hope that the characters link up at some point as there are vague references back to rob from 'in the woods' but it is very much a unique book.

Itchyfeetreader Yup this one on paper is really out there and yet still kind of captivating! 6mo
Ncostell I felt the main premise was rather far fetched but once I decided to just go with it I ended up enjoying this book. 6mo

This was a re-read; I first read this several years ago. One of my favorites. The premise is deeply absurd; a detective goes undercover as a murdered woman, which she is able to do because she is her exact doppelgänger. But French takes this ridiculous thread and weaves it into a beautiful, rich tapestry that is somehow believable and wholly lovely. Utterly captivating.

Book #7 in the Modern Mrs Darcy Must read mystery list! This is apart of the Dublin Murder Squad Series with detective Cassie Maddaux. In this book Cassie is investigating a murder or a girl who looks exactly like she does and even more creepy uses an alias that Cassie used in a previous case. Her boss talks her into solving the case my impersonating the victim. Ahhh! This thriller will keep you guessing until the end!

This was my second Tana French book and I was not disappointed. This felt like more than just a mystery because the characters were so developed and the writing was so good. It had some hints of The Secret History by Donna Tartt for me with the tight knit group of friends who are intellectuals and exclusively close. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

My last prompt for winter #Booked2019 - #femaledetective. French's in depth characterization is superb! It makes you forget how improbable the entire premise of the book is. I mean someone who looks exactly like you ends up dead and nobody can tell the difference when you showed up? Seems unlikely, but she pulls it off. I think it's a solid second book although some might be put off with the pace.

DNF. I don‘t usually give up on a book but this was way too detailed. The main character was not likable. 199 pages in and it didn‘t feel like it was going anywhere. I only read this because my library was doing a date with a book for valentines. The book was wrapped in valentines paper so all I knew about it, was that it was an adult thriller.

Finished this my 2nd Tana French book for the #femaledetective prompt for #booked2019!

I loved reading this. I don‘t know what it is about Tana French‘s writing, but every time I read one of her books I‘m fully enthralled. The writing is just so grim and atmospheric, it‘s like watching an episode of True Detective! I think I enjoyed this one even more than In the Woods.

Cinfhen Love this photo!!! I think Tana French might be a hit or miss author because from what I‘ve seen on Litsy people either love her books or bail!! I‘m in the wanted to bail but needed to complete the prompt camp😂😂 12mo
Kamisha @Cinfhen I agree! I could definitely see how she would be hit or miss for people. The couple I‘ve read, when you find out the “whodunnit,” it never really gives you a sense of closure, which feels strange in a mystery. I think I like them more for the darkness of the characters! 😈 12mo

This is one skilful and eerie psychological thriller. Great characterisation and stylishly intelligent writing makes it a compelling read. It exudes ‘The Secret History‘ vibes...has quirky characters dealing with the desire to belong in a communal setting. I can see why some didn‘t like this 2nd instalment of the Dublin Murder Squad series..one needs to suspend disbelief in a few things in the story. 👇

erzascarletbookgasm Apart from that, its atmosphere, story and French‘s writing will draw you in and keep you glued to the book up to its final 694th page.

Can anyone tell me if this book can be read separately without reading book 1 first, or do they tie in together since they‘re in a series ? And also, is it good ? I haven‘t read anything by this author.
Looking at the Audible 2 for 1 sale and trying to decide whether to pick this.
Thanks

Amiable I love Tana French! I tried to read them in order--there isn't a specific storyline that runs throughout that makes it absolutely necessary to read in order, but each book does refer back to characters and/or events that happened previously. So it does enhance the reading experience, in my opinion. 13mo
Kaye Thanks @Amiable . I believe I‘ll get it then and pick up book one before starting this. Thanks for your help. ( love the accent in the audio sample ) 13mo
whippoorwill815 I second what @Amiable said. Kaye Thanks @whippoorwill815 I‘ll wait to listen to it then. I‘ll have to pick up the first one. They seemed to have lots of high ratings so I hope they‘re good. I don‘t read a lot of that type book, but once n awhile, it‘s good to try something new. That‘s how I found Bird Box. 😁😱😁 13mo
whippoorwill815 I read lots of detective stories and thought these were great 😊 In the Woods has a bit of a polarizing ending (I personally liked it but I am probably in the minority!). What an incredible book. The language is so rich and powerful, Cassie Maddox is such a compelling character and narrator, and the story is complex and twist, that I couldn‘t put it down. This was a fascinating second installment to this series. I liked the perspectives shift from book 1. Cassie really interested me in that 1st story & getting closer to her was great. The mystery was great in this one as well...not necessarily the who done it but the who was she was what captivated me. & that who was/is she is 2-fold, Cassie & Lexie. French does complex, interesting characters & stories so well; I can‘t wait for my hold on book 3!

For those interested, here's my ranking of the Dublin Murder Squad. And yes, The Likeness & Broken Harbor are tied as my #1. What are your favorites? I've heard people claim that you can read the series out of order. I don't fully agree with that. While each book features a different narrator & a new case, each volume makes references, albeit subtle, to prior entries & it is interesting to track the portrayal of secondary characters (ie Cooper).

ferskner I agree that I don't think it's quite right out of order, but that may be my OCD talking. 1y

vivastory @jillannjohn I think she might be my favorite living crime writer! I have pre-ordered a signed edition of her next one, I'm thrilled! 1y

Kalalalatja That is high praise! I have never read anything buy her, because crime isn‘t really my genre, but I might have to get over myself and check her out! 1y

Pickpick

This one was much better than In the Woods. It was a bit long but the storyline was interesting. Things really picked up towards the end and I couldn‘t put it down. There was a point where I started to dislike Cassie and swore off reading anymore books in the series but then I changed my mind. I ended up listening to part of this on audio and I loved the Irish accents. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I wasn‘t a huge fan of the first book in this series, In the Woods— mainly because Detective Ryan got on my nerves —but I‘m looking forward to trying another title in the series.
