The haunting follow up to the Edgar Award-winning debut In the WoodsTana French astonished critics and readers alike with her mesmerizing debut novel, In the Woods. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl, but, more importantly, who is this girl? A disturbing tale of shifting identities, The Likeness firmly establishes Tana French as an important voice in suspense fiction. Actively trying to post in a more timely fashion what I‘m reading 🙈

I loved this book- I love tana french‘s writing- she really just places you right into the environment of a story, and it stays with me. I‘m so glad I haven‘t read through all of her dublin series so I still have them to look forward to. Am also very much looking forward to her newest release coming in March.

The best crime novel I‘ve read this year. The Likeness gives The Secret History vibes mixed with excellent, Irish procedural crime storytelling. Although the premise is a bit wild, once you suspend this disbelief you‘re in for a richly characterised, complexly plotted, well-paced, gritty novel. I loved and luxuriated in every minute of reading this. Can‘t wait to read the rest of the series.

batsy Ooh, that's an enticing review. I've had Tana French tbr for ever so long and maybe 2024 is the year I finally start with the series or one of the standalones! 3mo

The Likeness isn‘t a read-it-all-in-one-sitting grip-the-pages-til-your-knuckles-turn-white thriller. It‘s one to pick up when you‘re looking for a more complex story, one that weaves together police procedure and Gothic intrigue and psychological games. Even if the twists didn‘t surprise me, the whole of the novel sure did. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-likeness-tana-french/

CatMS I am a Tana French fan and have read everything of hers, "The Likeness" was my least favorite....but it is a good read. 10mo

The second book in the Dublin Murder Squad series. This book had a totally different feel for me than the first one. This one delves into the world of undercover officers, as Cassie assumes the identity of Lexie Madison, her look-a-like murder victim. I liked how Cassie began blurring the lines between herself and Lexie. I liked the atmosphere in the house the roommates owned. It provided an intriguing look at the insular life they led.

EvieBee I‘ve hesitated to read this series because my friends‘ favorites were always on into the series and not the first. Do I have to read in order? 2y
Ruthiella @EvieBee You don‘t have to read them in order. There is always one character from the previous book who becomes the main character in the next but plot-wise each book stands alone. 2y

First, this book was too long & takes forever to come to the point. However, I LOVED the Fabulous Four & wanted to live w them in intellectual splendor. The central problem of Cassie's old undercover identity popping up in a real (dead) person was interesting & creative. I loved seeing Frank in this as I had just read his story and it was good to see him purely through professional eyes. Bottom line: I really enjoyed the ride but the resolution ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ while clearly inevitable, made me sad. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘ve only read two other Tana French books, and was blown away by her character development and atmospheric settings. The writing is quite good here, too, if long-winded, BUT this story is dumb. Completely unbelievable and rather anticlimactic. Will it deter me from reading #DublinMurderSquad book 3? Absolutely not. I believe this is just a weak link in an otherwise sturdy chain.

jlhammar This wasn't my favorite either. I liked book 3 more and book 4 most of all. Hope those will be more to your liking! The Dublin Murders tv series did a pretty good job with it though. Combines books 1 & 2. Worth a watch. 2y
britt_brooke @jlhammar I liked the first book a lot and definitely plan to read the others, so I‘m happy to hear they‘re strong - thank you! I‘ll have to check out the show sometime, too. 2y
Cinfhen I read the first book and was not a fan. More Me than anything else 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Ruthiella The implausibility of the story was an issue for me too and the mystery could have been solved with, dare I say it, police work? 😂 Instead of theatrics. But I did like Cassie as a character. 2y

I loved this book - 2nd in the Dublin Mystery series by Tana French. Now important proviso - I don‘t read thrillers because I don‘t like a fast paced, adrenaline filled read - so these are slowly evolving character study types of mysteries - with lots of ambience. Might be a bit slow for some mystery fans. Weird coincidence is I just read a Barbara Vine mystery with a similar set-up - 2 girls & 3 guys, living in an old manor one had inherited. ⬇️

Centique Some summer flowers for you in the North. Sunflowers gifted by a friend and the red flower is from a Rata tree. A native tree - I‘m learning to tell them apart from our more famous Pohutakawa. 🌺🌸🌼🌻 3y
Soubhiville Those red flowers are so unique looking. Do they have a fragrance? Very cool. 3y
Centique @Soubhiville I didn‘t notice a fragrance - I‘ll have to go back and check! 3y

TrishB I think you just summed up why I don‘t like these! I like the full on action thrillers and I think I‘ve read 3 of these now and have to admit they are not for me. 3y
Centique @TrishB yes exactly! They‘re almost the opposite of what you‘d expect in the genre. Do you like the Robert Galbraith ones? The first two were slow and calm enough for me but the third one was much more of a thriller. 3y
Ruthiella I am almost positive that Tana French was influenced by The Secret History. This book in particular but also In the Woods gave me that Donna Tartt vibe. I agree that A Fatal Inversion is similar in its set up and atmosphere. 😀 (edited) 3y
TrishB @Ruthiella and I don‘t like Donna Tartt so that explains that too! 3y
TrishB @Centique I‘ve stopped reading JK 😞 I disagree with her stance so I‘m having a break from her. 3y
Ruthiella @TrishB Then you should probably avoid Barbara Vine too! 😂 3y
Centique @TrishB yeah I would for that reason as well - but I‘d decided RG wasn‘t doing it for me purely on a mystery level before that. 3y
TrishB @Ruthiella I‘ll remember that if ever tempted!! 3y
Centique @Ruthiella yes I love Barbara Vine and that first Donna Tart too - they‘re almost their own genre aren‘t they? I loved parts of The Goldfinch, but gawd that middle section seemed to take me weeks, I almost gave up 😝 3y
TrishB 👍🏻 understand. They are massive books if not enjoying too. 3y
Christy2318 I like this series a lot. This was my least favorite of the bunch but it was still good. 3y
Lucy_Anywhere I like this series for exactly that reason - slow build-up that deepens the mystery 3y
Centique @Christy2318 thank you - that makes me excited to read the rest of them! 3y

In the second of the Dublin murder series Cassie Maddox goes under cover to discover a murderer when her doppelganger is found dead.

I loved the premise of this one and it was well written but far too long. This felt like a bit of a slog at times (and that might have something to do with my current frame of mind) and I think that this affected suspense.

I did this as an audiobook and the Irish accent of the narrator was fabulous.

This is the second in the Dublin Murder Squad series not that you need to read that one first. I enjoy French‘s writing style the storyline was very intriguing, as a mystery/thriller, should be. The characters reminded me of the young people from Normal People but just a little older. But... this was a whopping 600+ pages and IMO needed a brutal edit. I want my mysteries to be sharp and snappy, this was not that.

Book 89 I like Tana French's original, surprising mysteries. Her settings are well-written and important to the plot, though not as much in The Likeness. The story is about a cop, who looks remarkably similar to a murder victim, going undercover to solve the case. This book is long, over 800 pages, and really could have been told in half that page count. However, I was compelled to read. 3.5 stars
