My Sister's Bones
My Sister's Bones | Nuala Ellwood
'COMPELLING AND INTRIGUING, RIGHT FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE' Sharon Bolton, Sunday Times bestselling author of Like This, For Ever Kate Rafter is a high-flying war reporter. She's the strong one. The one who escaped their father. Her younger sister Sally didn't. Instead, she drinks. But when their mother dies, Kate is forced to return to the old family home. And on her very first night she is woken by a scream. At first Kate tells herself it's just a nightmare. But then terrifying things start to happen, things she can't explain... What secret is lurking in her mother's garden? And what if the real danger is where you least expect it? 'A stunning book. I was drawn in by Nuala Ellwood's hypnotic, haunting and elegant prose. Compelling, unsettling and powerful this is a book that will stay with me for a long time' C. L. Taylor 'Loved I Let You Go and Behind Closed Doors? My Sister's Bones is guaranteed to be this year's most twisty and twisted read - you'll never see what's coming!' Ava Marsh, author of UNTOUCHABLE 'Gripping and beautifully written, My Sister's Bones is a tense, atmospheric, deliciously dark story' Amanda Jennings, author of IN HER WAKE 'An accomplished and page-turning thriller. It twists and turns in so many directions it's impossible to guess where it's going next' - Nicholas Searle, author of THE GOOD LIAR

A very good psychological thriller. I was very shocked at the ending, it was very intense and some what chilling.

Made me realise I'm very lucky to have such a fantastic relationship with my sister, she's like a best friend 👭

Ummm, no.

Took this thriller away with me as I hoped it‘d be a good holiday read. My friend had recommended it (sorry @Jeg 😗).

Is it just that my standards are too high these days? Is it that life‘s too short & I don‘t want to waste it on less than excellent books? 🤔

I have just spent a wonderful 5 days away with girlfriends and we talked about having diverse reactions to books. So many variables involved...

#booksnob

Jeg I can‘t remember it! 😊 6y
MrsMalaprop @jeg 😆. I guess you won‘t mind if I donate it to a Little Free Library then? I can give it back to you if you prefer. 6y
Jeg I don‘t think I wanted it back. In fact I‘m sure I didn‘t. 😊 . 6y

#LitsyAtoZ Letter E - i think im about 8 books in on my crime themed a-z and this was ok as a war reporter returns from Syria to deal with her mother's death, an alcoholic sister, and the ghost of an abusive father in herne bay- ptsd makes her doubt her own sanity as it reaches a climax. A few quibbles, an easy read but no lasting impression.

Finally managed to finish a book. Phew! I was kind of shocked this one was published main stream. It was littered with typos and the writing felt amateurish. The story was OK and a few things caught me by surprise but all in all I wasn‘t totally satisfied.

#MarchIntoOz #Scar I went with emotional scars. Kate Rafter is a respected journalist & war correspondent for the past fifteen years & an incident in Syria involving a young boy has left her with severe PSTD & emotional scars. Back home to settle her late mother's affairs, Kate sees a young boy in the garden next door. Is she suffering from hallucinations & flashbacks or is something else going on? A well-written twisty psychological thriller.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me reading as I wanted to find out what happened next. A few late nights getting it finished! The range of characters was interesting and there was a lot going on with each one. Despite this it was still very readable and not confusing at all. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This was a debut novel by Nuala Ellwood. It's a dark psychological thriller. Kate is a war journalist, back home after 15 years, because her mom has died. Sally, her younger sister, is an acholic. They both tell the story. It is compelling right from the start. It has quite a twist that will shock you. I was shocked by it. Enjoy.

Oh, this so totally made up for the mediocre mysteries I read last week. Dark, psychologically complex, with two unreliable narrators. The plot moves quickly but the secrets unfold slowly, and took me by complete surprise. I was going to put it down an hour ago and finish it in the morning, but one more chapter became the whole book 😱A must read if you like current events with a side of psychological thriller.

Compelling, suspenseful & one of the best psychological thrillers I've read in quite a while. Great pacing, skillful writing, twists & turns that kept me guessing & an unreliable female narrator that though flawed & suffering from PSTD (from her career as a war reporter covering the violence in Syria & a violent childhood), manages to be sympathetic & easy to root for. Paired w/ Syrian Muhammara (spicy red 🌶 dip) for my book tour review, link👇🏻

tournevis Mouhamara!!! I love love love it! 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I really want to read this but I get nervous of reading characters portrayed with PTSD. I have Anxiety & PTSD from military service. In most books I find they portray characters "crazy" with it. And out of control, which gets me upset, because that is not the case. What are your thoughts on the character that has PTSD? Real portrayal? Looks like a good book ❤️ 7y
DebinHawaii @tournevis It is really good. 👍😋 7y
DebinHawaii @ForeverNerdy I cannot claim to be an expert. I wouldn't say she was continually out of control from it but there were moments-but nothing felt unrealistic to me. You may want to check out the author's website. Her father is a journalist & his & other war reporter's experiences with PSTD inspired her to research it & make it a central part of the book. She has some posts about her research. Here's the link: https://nmellwood.wordpress.com 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh thank you! I'm going to head over to her site. I really want to read this! I feel like mental health issues in books if researched are really good & raise awareness, understanding, etc... But when done badly can hinder how people look at others especially with PTSD. Thank you so much! 😊 7y
DebinHawaii @ForeverNerdy I think it's hard for me to judge completely as it isn't a trigger for me. This character had an abusive childhood in addition to her experiences in Syria & there are some extenuating circumstances that add to things that is woven into the plot. Also it is a psychological thriller so there is some drama in the plot but in my opinion it didn't feel exploitive with the PSTD. I hope you enjoy it. 💜 7y
DebinHawaii @ForeverNerdy And thank you for your service and the sacrifices you made. Hugs 💜💜💜 7y

#24in48 #readathon Got in the 6 hours I wanted tonight & since it's close to 2AM, I'm headed to bed. 😴I'll be reviewing this book for a blog book tour next week but it's testament to how twisty & absorbing I found it that it kept me awake on Friday night after a long week.😱Also accomplished in my 6 hours: finished last chapter of Deathly Hollows for #hpchapteraday & chapter 4 of The Hobbit for #LOTRchapteraday & a few chapters of Rabbit Cake.👍
