This was going to be 5 ⭐️s with the unique lore and world building; the characters were so relatable and I was SO invested in them and their struggles. Then that ending comes and punches you right in the chest. I felt like the ending took away the whole point of the story. If there‘s ever a sequel, I will absolutely rush to snatch it up because I need closure. 😅🤣
In this fascinating noirish novel, Domingo, a young man who scavenges trash in the vampire-free zone of Mexico City, gets caught up in a deadly war between rival vampire families when he meets Atl, a young vampire on the run. Atl is the descendent of high priestesses who defended Aztec temples, her enemies a gang of vicious newcomers. Unique and intriguing world-building, vivid characters and a distinctive setting made this an exceptional read.
1. Not yet! I finally started putting decorations up yesterday.
2. Mexican vampire noir

I really enjoyed this one. It took a while for there to be any real action, and while that usually causes me to disengage with the story, I didn‘t have that happen with this one. The characters sucked me in, and I found them extremely likable even when they were being stupid. The dynamics between them were intense and the overall plot was exciting. The narrator did a fantastic job too. Another enjoyable read/listen from Silvia Moreno-Garcia!
I‘m taking a 4 hour road trip to my hometown tomorrow to help my sister with some personal matters… this listen is 8 hours long so it‘s just enough to keep me company during the whole commute. I‘ve read a couple of other books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and I loved them, so expectations are high 🤗
My tbr for March. 19-20, I'm leaving open for mood reads. I had 4 mood reads this month💗 I read a total of 9 books this month.

Tonight I opened my library book bundle bag and am thrilled to see Silvia Moreno-Garcia was included in the stack! I am so hyped for #deweysreadathon tomorrow y'all 😆
Finished this yesterday. I think I said this as soon as I started it, but this is my fave SMG. 🫦
Love SMG. This is my 5th read of hers. Very cool, gritty vampires in this one.
I finished this, but I haven't had a chance to get to the post office. I will this weekend! I think some of the author's ideas were really good, but they never became as fleshed out as I had hoped. I did enjoy reading it, and the cover is spot-on for the neon noir concept, which I enjoyed. Thanks for sharing, Kristin!
I really enjoyed this round and everyone's picks! Thanks @Johanna414 @kellyann28 @Readergrrl
Starting this one today! I still have to mail mine out, hopefully I'll get it in the mail on Friday. Dies the bookmark belong to anyone or does it stay with the book? @Johanna414 @Readergrrl @kellyann28 #lmpbc
This was a "middle of the road" read for me. Didn't hate it but didn't love it! I did like exploring the different vampire clans. I thought they were fun and interesting. I will get this mailed off next week! #LMPBC @Johanna414 @EclecticBookLover @Readergrrl
Got this in today! 🎉 #LMPBC @Readergrrl @Johanna414 @EclecticBookLover
This wasn't my favorite of Silvia Moreno-Garcia's books, but I did really like it. The whole neon-noir atmosphere was really cool! @kellyann28 I will try to get it in the mail tomorrow! #lmpbc @Readergrrl @EclecticBookLover
This cover had me from the beginning! 🔥🔥🔥 The story was like a 1940s Noir/BladeRunner/Sin City mashup that I‘ve come to love from Moreno-Garcia. I liked the spin on vampire/human drug lords and gang wars set in Mexico City combined with with star-crossed teen lovers. Entertaining!! I highly recommend listening on Audible. The narrator (Aida Reluzco) was splendid, capturing the nuances of Atl and Domingo‘s characters. Worth it!! 4/5⭐️
I really loved this new take on vampires. There are different types and they each have a different effect on humans, as well as each on other. Humans with bad blood can also infect some of them too. I did like the ending. I will definitely read more by this author. I will put a spoiler about the dog in a comment below to let you know if they live or not. (For those who need to know before reading.)
This one has a very interesting world concept — vampires of many species all inhabiting our world and relegated to certain areas. Fighting amongst themselves seems almost inevitable… the story was solid and engaging overall, but the pacing felt uneven and that made it hard for me to keep a sustained interest. Still a good read if you like the darker side of vampire fiction.
This one was a different vampire story. A mix of paranormal characters with humans and drug gangs. I liked the world because it was different with different vampire species It is dark and gory. The conclusion, I think was expected. Sometimes it was difficult to remember some names or words but there is a glossary at the end of the book. 3/3.5⭐️I like that cover😍
I‘m a sucker for urban fantasy & really enjoyed this different take on vampires. I loved how Moreno-Garcia plays with the common myths assigning different parts to different types of vampires in her world. I thought the idea that they evolved into different subspecies with various characteristics from various parts of the world was well thought out & executed. Aztecs + vampires 😍
I also enjoyed the noir feel and the various viewpoints …⬇️
I'm really enjoying this book. The writing is excellent. The vampires are plenty but there are different types which is a unique take. They are also born and not made. The Doberman belongs to a character and has a bioluminescent tattoo on its neck and face. Did I buy this because of the dog on the cover? I'll never tell. (Tea is Pukka: rose, chamomile & lavender.)
Okay, #GroupJ I‘ve finally made my decision. I‘m going with Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I really wanted to read the others too, but this one has some really cool features like an encyclopedia, author interview, and a cocktail recipe in the back that I want to try. Also, that cover!! 🔥🔥🔥 Wake, Siren would have been my pick, but I‘ve read that it is definitely not a romance.

I'm hoping to start this one before October ends. I'm trying to finish my ghost stories one 1st though.

Another book from my October TBR, this one is supposed to be a #dark vampire tale & I‘m hoping to get to it this month.

Totally different horror then I expected so far but great story... and it has vampires!
Took me a little while to get into this and I don‘t think it as good as some of the authors other books but this is still a real solid, dark and original thriller.
It‘s kind of ‘Narcos‘ plus vampires and I enjoyed it overall. The second half of the book is particularly good.
This book is amazing. And this author is becoming one of my favorite authors out there. What are your thoughts? https://linktr.ee/ddphughes #bipoc #vampires #fallreading
First off, this cover is really cool! The story is too but I have to confess I fell asleep a couple of times. I think it's an interesting take on #vampires and I always appreciate the #mexico #historicalfiction settings in Silvia's books, but idk, it was just ok. I really liked Domingo, he was so cute, but Atl was hard to love bc she didn't let ppl close to her. In a way she was very complex. And the ending made me a bit sad lol 3.5 ⭐ #fantasy
I started this one a few days ago but it didn't instantly catch my interest so i started other books. Now it's time to finish it #vampires #mexicocity #mexicanlore #augustARC @Clwojick
I love how Silvia Moreno-Garcia hops from genre to genre with every book rather than sticking to something safe or easy to sell. I liked the noir feel to this one and the idea of different species of vampires. Probably not my favorite of her books, but still a great read!
Turns out you don't get much reading done when there are kittens in the house... we are fostering these babies for a couple weeks and I can't get enough of them! I did spend some time listening to the tagged audiobook while snuggling them today 😻
Ran out of renewals - so a late night library return was in order…
Will have to remember to reserve it again in the future when there is room in my library holds queue…
This sounds so different from other vampire books, I have to give it a try!

#bookspin # doublespin and #bookspinbingo list for February!
I'm trying to actually finish some reading challenges this year, and many of the books on the list may apply to #pop22 #readharder22 or #booked22
Book 1 has been on my list since my in-person book club chose it for "up next..."Last October ? no one else managed to read it either, though, so I'm in good company! Lol
Nos. 2 and 3 are #roll100 and I actually remember buying them! Amazing.
If you enjoy vampires, noir, alternative realities, or just smart writing… this is for you. Silvia Moreno-Garcia‘s work is more well known now due to “Mexican Gothic” and I am really glad this was reprinted and I got my hands on it! #vampires #colonialism #folklore #noir #bookjournal
Ok seriously… every time I read a Silvia Moreno-Garcia novel for the first time it becomes my new favorite Silvia Moreno-Garcia novel. And that‘s ok!
Love this fresh take on vampire lore. Very gritty and gory, but lots of fun.

Thank you again so much! ❤️

Dark, bloody, and lit up like neon glinting off fangs, Certain Dark Things is a vampire novel unlike any I‘ve read before. I really enjoyed the world-building, the action-packed plot, and the main characters—garbage collecting street kid Domingo and beautiful and menacing vampire brat Atl, but I don‘t think noir—or even neo-noir or neon-noir as SMG calls it—is my genre! I appreciated but didn‘t love this, same way I felt about SMG‘s recent noir.
Could totally be my reading mood right now since I have really enjoyed the other 2 novels by Silvia but this was just meh to me
A fresh take on the vampire mythos. I really liked how the world knows about vampires, and in some ways coexists with them. This book focuses on Atl, who comes from an ancient line of Aztec vampires, and Nick, one of the Necros form of vampires. Nick wants to kill Atl. Add in a young human assistant, and a police detective determined to stop the vampires, and you get a great story. I loved the world building here, and the writing was intriguing.
I loved this book and I loved Domingo‘s character, but Silvia! What is with your endings, woman?!? So disappointed with the ending but the book is worth it. It has a very different spin on vampires.
I loved this book. It has really unique vampire families & its set in an alternative realitity of Mexico. Domingo is a garbage collector & Atl is a vampire on the run from another vampire gang, the one that killed her family 🖤
