The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making | Catherynne M. Valente
"One of the most extraordinary works of fantasy, for adults or children, published so far this century."Time magazine, on the Fairyland seriesTwelve-year-old September lives in Omaha, and used to have an ordinary life, until her father went to war and her mother went to work. One day, September is met at her kitchen window by a Green Wind (taking the form of a gentleman in a green jacket), who invites her on an adventure, implying that her help is needed in Fairyland. The new Marquess is unpredictable and fickle, and also not much older than September. Only September can retrieve a talisman the Marquess wants from the enchanted woods, and if she doesn't . . . then the Marquess will make life impossible for the inhabitants of Fairyland. September is already making new friends, including a book-loving Wyvern and a mysterious boy named Saturday. With exquisite illustrations by acclaimed artist Ana Juan, Fairyland lives up to the sensation it created when author Catherynne M. Valente first posted it online. For readers of all ages who love the charm of Alice in Wonderland and the soul of The Golden Compass, here is a reading experience unto itself: unforgettable, and so very beautiful. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making is a Publishers Weekly Best Children's Fiction title for 2011.

A story worth savoring! September is an enjoyable fairy favorite and Ell the Wyverary plays his sidekick role with gusto! Beyond quotable, super huggable, and just an all around feel good read. Shout out to the illustrator too! Mad talent ticked within these pages!

Liked it, didn‘t love it. Definitely not just a children‘s fairy tale story- there are some graphic deaths in this book! I enjoyed the references to other tales, and the creativity in the world-building of this. The narration was unique and contributed well to the storytelling aspect of this. Overall, a 4 ⭐️ read.

Also, I ended up owning 2 copies of this book. Would anyone like to trade for something off my TBR? ☺️

Playing with my new French Press this morning! As a coffee lover, I was tempted by the simplicity of the device and it‘s promise of the best tasting cup o‘ joe I‘d ever have. I finally caved in and got one. 🙈

Joining me this AM is September. I‘ve had so much fun tagging along on her adventure! I want my very own Wyverary like A-through-L. 🎃🐉

callielafleur The place I'm staying at has a French press, which I also used for the first time this AM! How did your coffee turn out? 5mo
laur89 @callielafleur Delicious and strong! It‘s also a lot more fun to make my coffee in this as opposed to my Keurig. How was your brewing experience? ☕️🖤 (edited) 5mo

Anyone know the difference between these editions? So far, all I can tell is that the right one has an author interview and some bonus material, yet less pages than the left one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, does anyone want to #swap for the extra copy? 💌

Day one of #CharactersLikeAlice

For #Alice I have to go with September from Valente‘s Fairyland series. She is Alice and Dorothy and more, all in one. She rides the Green Wind to Fairyland where things are strange indeed, and becomes, almost inadvertently, an expert in dealing with bloodthirsty monarchs.

LibrarianRyan Yeah. I really tried to get into this book but I couldn‘t. I‘ll try again later. But I like your choice. 10mo
Leniverse @LibrarianRyan The prose is a bit extravagantly quirky, perhaps. 😂 It‘s funny, my son and I love it, but my daughter, who is a more likely target audience, isn‘t too keen. 10mo
LibrarianRyan @Leniverse I‘ve read a few other books by the same author and you are right. I think it‘s the prose. I find it weird or annoying in every book if hers. I still like them but its not a fast read. 10mo

As usual, I can‘t pick just one.😬

Favorites: classics (both the darker and happily ever after versions) like Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Retellings: Novik‘s Uprooted and Spinning Silver, The Bear and the Nightingale by Arden, and the ACOTAR series by Maas.

Most wished for: tagged book, The Princess Bride, or The Silver Dark Sea by Susan Fletcher.❤️

Have you ever read a book in passing—a book that you thought was a one-off only to find out years later that it was part of a series and now you scramble to find each one and devour it?

That was me with Fairyland. Revisiting it with September has been a slow burn because life gets in the way, but now it‘s on to the next Adventure (yes, capital A!)—because the Ravished leave, yes, but they always return in the spring.

The story came a across as a mix between Patricia C. Wrede and Neil Gaiman. I generally liked it, and it was a fairly quick read. The main character grew throughout the story, and the secondary characters were great. However, I personally didn‘t like the narration style or how often the fourth wall was broken.
