This was a brilliant tale. It's Gothic with some Neil Gaiman and a little Labyrinth mixed in.
Olivia has been growing up in an orphanage until she receives a letter from her uncle, who wants her to return to the family home, Gallant.

May was a big reading month. I read all but one of the novellas/books of The Murderbot Diaries (the last one is still on my holds list). I read both May spins and a past one. There‘s only one bingo, but I‘m really proud of this month.

I read faster than I wrote reviews. Apologies in advance for the slew of reviews I‘ll be posting.

I liked how cozy this was to read, and I liked characters. Mostly. Some of them are annoying but that's also humane.

This was really light read, I enjoyed this more than previous ones. Usually there is so many unnecessary pages but his was short - so even though there wasn't that much happening in this one either it was so much more bearable.

I love antiheros and this book's antohero MC didn't make an exception. I also liked monastery as setting.

I loved atmosphere, secrets and politics but this book dragged so so badly! Blurp of this book is enough to tell you what happened in this book. This was clearly the first book in the series that's only purpose was to build everything ready for the next installment.

Really fun read, plot wasn't the best part of the book but you forgive quite much if you love the characters and the world.

This book had so much action! Chapters were short and often ended with a cliffhanger. Still this managed to dragg a bit because there were some unnecessary scenes or too long minor scenes.

The Summer Tree | Guy Gavriel Kay
post image

It‘s the final week of our #WyrdAndWonder read-along of The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay, with questions set by Mayri of BookForager!

(Please, no spoilers for future books - and beware, every question is a spoiler for book one at this point!)

imyril 1. Paul is now the Lord of the Summer Tree. What do you think this means/ will mean?

2. Jennifer asks herself “what was her sin, what had she done“ to deserve the TERRIBLE punishment she receives at the hands of Maugrim and his creatures. What are your thoughts and feelings on Jennifer's plight, and how have you made sense of it within the scope of the scope of the story so far?
2y
imyril 3. What did you make of the events in the throne room, from the assassination attempt to the showdown for the crown?

4. There's been a surfeit of signs, a plethora of portents in this week's reading. Now is the time to air your opinions on such things as flying unicorns, getting lost in the woods, the Cave of the Sleepers, magical Horns and unearthed Cauldrons.
2y
imyril 5. The Dwarves did it, in the darkness, with the Cauldron of Khath Meigol! What do you make of this last-minute revelation? And care to make any predictions on future developments?

6. Finally, reaction shots on Maugrim the Unraveller - go!

PageShifter I have not even started -.- But well. There is still days left. I am also interested to read the rest of the series. When BR for them is going to happen? 2y
imyril @PageShifter polling for interest but probably rolling straight into the sequel next month :) 2y
PageShifter Wow, that was great news! 2y
imyril @PageShifter slight shift: July - we have a couple people who haven‘t started / finished book one yet and want time to catch up :) 2y

Andy Serkis is a brilliant narrator and now on to the LOTR trilogy he narrated 🦅

Liatrek I‘m listening to the Fellowship now and he is so great! 2y
Cinfhen Awesome 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 cool choice 2y
imyril I've been sorely tempted to pick up his narrations, but I grew up listening to the BBC radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings - which even Peter Jackson couldn't drum out of me, the two version of “fly you fools“ compete in my head - so I've resisted so far by telling myself I'm going to replace my ancient unplayable cassettes 😂 ...but the Serkis version is unabridged, so sorely, sorely tempted! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I admire any narrator willing to confidently tackle Tolkien's penchant for complicated names! 😂 2y

So admittedly I didn't need another copy of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone but this illustrated one was too gorgeous to pass up. And it's always fun for a reread 🦉

#WyrdAndWonder day 22: bite size delight
(expect catch up posts for the days I‘ve missed)

Today I‘m featuring Zen Cho‘s gorgeous novella of monks, outlaws and magic - I loved The Order of The Pure Moon Reflected In Water 💕

I‘ll be celebrating another Zen Cho novella on the blog in today‘s Fantastic Five and over on Twitter I‘m giving away a copy of Black Water Sister! (UK only, sorry)
