A Lowcountry Heart
A Lowcountry Heart: Reflections on a Writing Life | Pat Conroy
Final words and heartfelt remembrances from bestselling author Pat Conroy take center stage in this winning nonfiction collection, supplemented by touching pieces from Conroys many friends. This new volume of Pat Conroys nonfiction brings together some of the most charming interviews, magazine articles, speeches, and letters from his long literary career, many of them addressed directly to his readers with his habitual greeting, Hey, out there. Ranging across diverse subjects, such as favorite recent reads, the challenge of staying motivated to exercise, and processing the loss of dear friends, Conroys eminently memorable pieces offer a unique window into the life of a true titan of Southern writing. With a beautiful introduction from his widow, novelist Cassandra King, A Lowcountry Heart also honors Conroys legacy and the innumerable lives he touched. Finally, the collection turns to remembrances of The Great Conroy, as he is lovingly titled by friends, and concludes with a eulogy. The inarguable power of Conroys work resonates throughout A Lowcountry Heart, and his influence promises to endure. This moving tribute is sure to be a cherished keepsake for any true Conroy fan and remain a lasting monument to one of the best-loved masters of contemporary American letters. From the Hardcover edition.

I don‘t know when reading books became the most essential thing about me but it happened over the years and I found myself the most willing servant of what I considered a rich habit.

Just started this on the way to work. Even if your not a fan or a writer, listen to the beautiful tribute by his wife and fellow author Cassandra King in the forward. Beautiful words.

Although only ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5, I am giving it a Pick...because Pat Conroy...because he so very special...and his story is still not completely told...what book in his remembrance could ever say it all...some parts of this were eloquent, poignant and heartbreaking...but too many parts were blah...”My Reading Life” by him is a must read and now I have to read “The Death of Santini” which he calls his memoir...This is his grave in Beaufort, SC

Laylafinn I lived in Beaufort South Carolina for several years! I absolutely loved it! Such a beautiful place 7y

This is the perfect next read. Pat Conroy was also a friend, a favorite author who spoke my language, and his book “My Reading Life” is so far my favorite about the life of a serious reader. Plus, both he and Andy Miller stress that “War and Peace” is the book of books and a must read. I am not sure about that time commitment right now...We shall see...

I've been a lover of Pat Conroy ever since I first listened to him read his book My Reading Life...which I've since listened to twice more. I am so glad these "letters" of his were pulled together for those of us left wanting more Pat Conroy.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Wow! Did not know about this book! Gone too soon! 😔 (edited) 7y
Pam.Kokomo @Joyfulmimi Yes! My husband fell hard for him this year. It's been gratifying for someone else to love him as much as I do! 7y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I am in your club. He is also one of my favorites. The book I am reading now, Immortal Diamond, just referenced a Flannery O'Connor story. Now she is on my list. So many books, not enough time. @Pam.Kokomo (edited) 7y

Blueberry This is on my tbr list. I saw Pat Conroy speaking about writing this book on TV. I like his South of Broad best I think. 7y
chapter_fifty2017 I would love to have seen him speaking , i have heard interviews, he seemed to have come through so much of his own family pain but the first one i read of his was Prince of Tides its impression on me was so deeply resonant that i cant forget it although i did love South of Broad too and actually want to read the Great Santini sometime soon , i really felt a loss when he died😔thanks for that blueberry Good name 😁 7y

#bookishpetpeeves based on my current listen.....when the audiobook has only one narrator and he doesn't identify the author of the section. Was that a Pat Conroy written blog post or notes from his friends?!?!? Urgh! #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

Mehso-so

My parents bought me this posthumously published collection of Conroy's blog posts and speeches because I fell for his work by filching their books when I was younger. Interesting to see that his books are the embodiment of the man himself, all superlatives and the overuse of the word "love." But a full book? More than I needed.

I‘ve written more about my parents than any writer in the history of the world, and I still return to their mysterious effigies as I try to figure out what it all means—some kind of annunciation or maybe even a summing-up. They still exert immense control over me even though they‘ve been dead for so long. But I can conjure up their images without exerting a thimbleful of effort.
