August Is a Wicked Month
August Is a Wicked Month: A Novel | Edna O'Brien
17 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
Eschewing her stale life in London, one woman embarks on a journey of independence and sexual liberation on the French Riviera Separated from her husband, and with her young son away on a camping trip, Ellen decides to flee her lonely London home, naively pursuing a jaunt into iniquity along Frances Mediterranean coast. But will she find the escape she longs for, or the entrapment she so deeply fears? In August Is a Wicked Month, Edna OBriens lyric, languid prose creates a character at once ordinary and mythic, struggling to forge her own path not as a wife, mother, mistress, or loverbut as simply, assuredly herself.

Mehso-so

In an attempt to ford the loneliness of wanting an otherwise occupied lover and missing her young son away on a camping trip, divorcee Ellen embarks on a retreat to coastal France in search of sun, sex and other forms of self-obliterating hedonism in the high heat of late summer. As many “wicked” books often end, tragedy strikes.

Pickpick

London woman, estranged from her husband, has a meaningless vacation affair on the French Riviera. A prescient 1965 exploration of the darker aspects of the sexual revolution and its new oppressions: mandatory promiscuity and a stress on slimness that causes neurotic calorie-counting. Artificiality, decadence, bodily effluvia, and consumerism pervades. countering male-authored portraits of the 1960s as liberation

Been a little MIA here for the last week or so. My boy caught covid for the second time but he‘s recovered already just in time for school starting next week. Gonna try for 6 for this 9 day challenge since I was able to complete 5 for the July challenge. #AwesomeAugust

After my 🩰 on Thurs I always walk the hr home to try & work the soreness out of my muscles. I get home about 9:30 pm depending on how long my teacher holds me back to work on my exam routines. I always (even when it is raining) go via the book swap. It‘s a long day considering my alarm goes off at 4:45 am but l❤️ it. These are some of the treasures I scored last week. They‘ll take pride of place on my bookshelf and not be living in the basement.

EvieBee The Winds of Heaven in the original penguin paperback! 😍😍 2y

Why on earth did I buy this book? It‘s kind of sad and pathetic and boring, which given the subject: sex and the south of France, is shockingly hard to make so uninteresting.

Not a lot of finished books this month, many thanks to IRL issues. But, I finished four books from my #MakeMeReadIt stack...thank you for hosting that, @TheReadingMermaid !

This also marks the end of #13books13weeks ...though I did read 13 books, they were not the books I designated for the reading. I finished 2 from that list. Thanks for hosting, @TheHeartlandBookFairy !

The weird dialogue ruined what could have been an epically sad story. It was so disruptive and random at times (people just making weird statements out fo nowhere) that it took focus away from the story, and I couldn‘t see the point of it. Perhaps people conversed like that in the 60‘s? (Rich people at least) Still, not bad at all.

wanderlustforwords I was just going to ask you how it was. I‘ve wondered about her many times. Now I will hold off on trying her for now. 6y

The season for reading outside has just started. All the dialogue and interactions between characters in this book are super weird and random.
