"My name is Liv (Not Olivia)... I'm not technically a girl.I'm Transgender. Which is a bit like being a transformer. Only not quite as cool because I probably won't get to save the world one day."Liv knows he was always meant to be a boy, but with his new school's terrible dress code, he can't even wear pants. Only skirts.Operation: Pants Project begins! The only way for Liv to get what he wants is to go after it himself. But to Liv, this isn't just a mission to change the policy--it's a mission to change his life. And that's a pretty big deal.

Did I enjoy reading this book? Yes, yes I did. And while yes, this is a book about the struggles of trans sixth grader, I also still expected it to be a novel of feminism and in a way it was, but the author attacked gender norms set for girls while encouraging the ones set for men. The MC just seemed to struggled off male stereotypes and issues way too easily (I just mean when the MC‘s guy friend mentioned how dumb it was that he couldn‘t wear a⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️skirt to school and the MC laughed it off). I mean I guess 4⭐️? 2y

I choose this book because it talks about Liv the main character who feels that he was born a girl but is born as a guy.
But the bigger problem is that he's forced to wear this skirt as his uniform in his new school, and he's very uncomfortable wearing a skirt. But Liv is on a mission, and with the help of another friend he can change the principal's mind and maybe the whole school.

This was a delightful book, the story was solid, and it was so easy to fall in love with the characters. Felt like occasionally the middle-graders sounded like older teens, but other than that, this was so good.

I think the author is cis, which I was super apprehensive about, but she's handled the story and the characters really well.

I loved this middle grade book about 12 yr old Liv, who knows he's a boy. His fight to change an outdated school uniform policy is written with sensitivity and hope. My review is now at my blog. https://trishtalkstexts.wordpress.com/2017/03/04/review-the-pants-project-by-cat... Out in the US on March 1st, and in Australian on March 7. Thanks to #netgalley and #sourcebooksjabberwocky for letting me preview it.#blogging #review

I ended up reading this straight through; couldn't put it down. Loved the characters, the rep (#trans MC, family with two moms, and secondary character with a disability), the story, and especially the hopefulness! There is no objectification via inspiration or tragedy. I know a few middle school age genderqueer/trans kids, and everything about this book mirrors their thinking and their moxie, as well as the challenges they face. 5🌟 #middlegrade

RadicalReader @lovelybookshelf not sure if I was going to like this book or not but still undecided if I liked the the book because of the mixed reviews 7y
lovelybookshelf @RadicalReader I come from the perspective of someone very close to a trans person (my spouse). I'm cis though, so I wanted to double check my "loved it!" feelings since afaik the author is also cis. I was heartened to find a very thoughtful, 5-star review from a gender fluid reader. I haven't yet read the reviews on Litsy, but they're pretty positive on Goodreads. ? 7y
RadicalReader @lovelybookshelf my friend is trans she is such a wonderful person so well spoken and can talk to her about anything and everything. What's cis? 7y

lovelybookshelf @RadicalReader Cis means you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth. 7y
RadicalReader @lovelybookshelf I thought transgender is when somebody doesn't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth?? 7y
lovelybookshelf @RadicalReader Correct. And cis is the opposite - it means you DO identify with that gender. 7y
RadicalReader @lovelybookshelf if you identify with the gender you were assigned at birth you wouldn't be a transgender person correct? Sorry best way to find the answers to questions is to ask. No stupid questions exist 7y
lovelybookshelf @RadicalReader That's correct, in that case, you would be cis. 7y
RadicalReader @lovelybookshelf thanks so much. What's your name you are so sweet and nice!!! 7y

Coming out next week: This middle school novel features a #transgender protagonist who is mortified by the strict uniform policy at his new school. Liv --not Olivia-- has known he is really a boy for several years and he is now determined to lobby for a more flexible and inclusive policy that doesn't require girls to wear skirts. The novel charts Liv's attempts at activism as well as the repercussions of being a transgender 11-year-old. #NetGalley

LibrarianRyan I want to read that book. It looks so fun. 7y

RadicalReader @WanderingBookaneer what's topolino and topalina have to do with the passage? 7y
WanderingBookaneer @RadicalReader : By ending the word with an "o" Liv's mamma is essentially acknowledging that Liv is male. 7y
lovelybookshelf Ohhhhh nice catch! I'm embarrassed I didn't notice this, ha! His moms do mention they knew but weren't 100% sure. And Mamma seemed especially perceptive. With Liv not really being an Italian speaker as far as we know, I wonder if this is an indication that Mamma knew and it shows in her language...(or could be an editing error, but my theory makes me happy!!) 7y
lovelybookshelf 😶 I didn't read your earlier comment closely enough, lol 7y

Suet624 Yes. I remember my twin boys talking with each other about this. 7y
saresmoore I appreciate the video game analogy. Every time our kids have hit some intangible milestone, my husband and I have called it a "Level Up". That's right, future world leaders are currently being raised by the first of the video game generations. ? 7y

Just finished this through #NetGalley and it was a solid middle grade book about a transgender boy navigating 6th grade. Not earth shattering but solid. I agree with another Litsy reviewer who noted that the writing was a bit too cheery to feel totally authentic. There was a secondary character with an interesting story (wish it had been featured more) and the MC Liv has 2 moms, which is another point of interest.

lovelybookshelf Hmmm I haven't requested this one because I'm kind of tired of this theme when written by cis authors, but you have me intrigued. (That being said, cheery isn't always inauthentic when it comes to being trans!) 😄 7y
LiteraryinLawrence @lovelybookshelf You're totally right! Cheery might not be the right way to describe it. I guess what I meant was that being always mistaken for the wrong gender didn't feel that high stakes for the main character's identity. 7y

lovelybookshelf Hmmm yeah that does sound kinda off. Your review inspired me to request it from Netgalley though. Thanks! 7y
LiteraryinLawrence @lovelybookshelf Cool! I'll be curious to hear what you think! 7y
RadicalReader @LiteraryinLititz what an awesome book because of the analogies 7y
lovelybookshelf @LiteraryinLititz I just posted my review. I loved it and read it straight through! I think the cheeriness is great, especially considering the audience (and the cis author, afaik) - trans kids need uplifting rep, too! 😄 7y
lovelybookshelf Just re-read the earlier thread. I didn't find his reaction to being misgendered out of the norm. Especially since he hadn't yet come out. 7y

Mehso-so

The message in this book is incredibly important. Unfortunately, the fact that it's written for middle grade students caused the writing to feel a little too cheery and the major plot points seemed to work out too conveniently.

LiteraryinLawrence Good to know. This is on my TBR but maybe I'll temper my expectations. 7y

Not as good as Gracefully Grayson, but a solid look not just at a trans boy finding his way but also growing up with two moms, starting middle school, and all the changes that entails

Battling my election-eve anxiety with this goodie I got on netgalley today. I'm very excited to read this; I love the way middle grade books have been handling glbt issues in the last few years, and I've heard good things about this one. All the other trans middle grade characters I've read have been mtf, but this main character is ftm.

DogMomIrene Looking forward to your thoughts on this one. I have a friend who teaches a Queer Lit class and he's always looking for diversity. 7y
Bette I love Cat Clarke, thanks for the early tip! 💕👍 7y
