This book is a Historical Fiction book that was published in 1969. The book was great and interesting throughout. The length of the book is great for those who are starting to read chapter books, and allows for one to reflect on the history within the book.
The book explains the struggles of black family. One of the struggles that the reader is introduced to in the beginning is that the father in the family is imprisoned because he stole a ham.
*Unpopular opinion* I read this to my 8 and 10 yr daughters. It's the October pick for my classic lit book club. Honestly, I didn't love it. The writing was seriously lacking for me. The author failed to illicit any emotion from us; I think we didn't care that much bc there is no character development to speak of. I'm really not sure what we were supposed to take away from this book. It wasn't even about the dog at all. #kiddielit #overdrive
#24in48 Hour 18 Challenge - What‘s on your nightstand? I keep my library checkouts on the shelf at the bottom (some are on my desk as they are my stack for the readathon) and any current reads. The mug has some of my bookmarks, an eyeglass cleaning cloth, and a lip balm.
Sounder by William H. Armstrong a Newbery Medal Award Book.Sounder a NF story about an African-American family in the 19th century who had very little food. The father was a sharecropper, goes hunting for food for his family with Sounder , their dog . One day he stole a hog. He gets arrested and the mean sheriff shoots at Sounder. Sounder was no where to be found. The mom used to tell the children Sounder will return as soon as he is better.
Read this in 6th grade—never forgot it and can still cry to this day (so many, many moons after 6th grade) thinking about the ending

I‘m on my lunch hour so I finally have time to get started on the #throwbackreadathon! First up is Sounder. I can‘t remember if I read this as a kid. It‘s a Newberry winner and sounds wonderful.
Young boy's father is a sharecropper who has trouble putting food on the table. Every night he and the dog Sounder go out hunting. One morning the boy wakes to the smell of ham. Later some men come calling. They take his father to prison for stealing the meat.
The story follows what happens to the family after the father's arrest. It never flinches from the difficulties, but also the reader sees the boy knows no other reality.
Next up in my kid reads is this one. Although I think I read it many years ago.
