Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel
Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel: A Novel | Sara Farizan
44 posts | 60 read | 55 to read
NOW IN PAPERBACK! Farizan exceeds the high expectations she set with her debut, If You Could Be Mine, in this fresh, humorous, and poignant exploration of friendship and love, a welcome addition to the coming-out/coming-of-age genre. Publishers Weekly, starred review Leila has made it most of the way through Armstead Academy without having a crush on anyone, which is a relief. As an Iranian-American, shes different enough; if word got out that Leila liked girls, life would be twice as hard. But when beautiful new girl Saskia shows up, Leila starts to take risks she never thought she would. As she carefully confides in trusted friends about Saskias confusing signals, Leila begins to figure out that all her classmates are more complicated than they first appear to be, and some are keeping surprising secrets of their own.Farizan fashions an empowering romance featuring a lovable, awkward protagonist who just needs a little nudge of confidence to totally claim her multifaceted identity. Booklist, starred review A David Levithanstyle romance in which a characters sexual identity is neither problematic nor in question, and coming out is just one of many obstacles affecting the course of true love. The Horn Book Magazine Funny, heartwarming and wise. Kirkus Reviews Leilas coming out to her friends and family and her fear of disappointing her parents will resonate with all young adults. This book was adorable, predictable, uplifting, saccharine, and exactly what I wanted out of a book at this exact moment. The dialogue and character development was great. There are some aspects of the plot that were resolved too quickly for real life but I appreciate what the author was doing. My only complaint is the very last sentence. It comes across as trying too hard, it feels trite, and doesn‘t fit with the overall narrative style.

I agreed to pick my aunt up from the airport, but her flight was delayed until 1 am. Looks like I‘ll be reading for a while... loving this book so far. Leila knows she likes girls and she‘s not ready to tell anyone. Which is fine. Because she doesn‘t have a crush at school...until a new student transfers to Armstead Academy.

For my “crush” space of the summer challenge. I wanted to love this, but it ended up falling flat.

Leila learns the hard way which girls she should--and shouldn't-- fall for when her crush almost ruins everything. Really enjoyed this cute lgbtq romance about finding acceptance--and learning to accept yourself--even when it seems impossible.

It‘s not easy being different in school. Leila already stands out because of her Iranian background, but she also holds close to her a secret – she likes girls. It‘s a lighter read yet it discusses some complicated issues that face many teens out there – discovering their own identity, standing up for themselves and what they believe in, relationships with family and friends, and learning that it‘s ok to be different.

writerlibrarian Lovely throw and it fits perfectly. 💜 6y

This one gets mixed reviews here and on goodreads, but I thought it was good! I liked the characters, and while the student who causes the problems is a tad unbelievable I still enjoyed the story. Pic is from a geocaching adventure we took today that involved a sad old tourist trap down the road.

Jinjer What is that adorable sad tourist trap???? 6y

More from my queer YA lit, with diverse voices. Its kind of a heartbreaking but fulfilling novel, that matches the tone of high school love and heartache.

HOTPock3tt Hi!! :) can you recommend a few books with female/female relationships? It doesn‘t have to have a complicated story just something where they fall in love etc... 6y
broughtyoubooks @HOTPock3tt i haven't read a lot of more recent ones, but I would recommend Carol/The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, She Loves You, She Loves you Not by Julie Anne Peters and The More I Owe You by Michael Sledge. I'm power reading wlw fiction for uni, so Ill probably have more after that 😊 6y
HOTPock3tt Wow! thanks for so many recommendations!! ☺️❤️ New or older doesn‘t matter. I really appreciate it. I have been looking around but couldn‘t find anything, and I really wanted to read a female+female love story! I just placed a library hold on ‘the price of salt‘!! Thanks again :) (edited) 6y
broughtyoubooks No problem. These ones all have some sort of heavy stuff, so Ill look around for some more fluffy wlw. 💜 6y

I've read and loved both of these sweet, diverse YA novels recently, neither of which I had heard of until Litsy, and I'm in the market for more! I love the uplifting quality, the fun, easy reading, and the diverse perspectives and experiences! Any recommendations? 😊 #weneeddiversebooks

Caterina @AmandaL Thank you, that sounds really good! 7y
Caterina @Lacythebookworm I read Everything, Everything by Yoon and thought it was just okay, but The Sun Is Also a Star sounds better? 7y
leslieisreading Seconding Aristotle and Dante, that's what I was going to say! It's a little angstier than Simon, but it's so beautiful and ultimately uplifting. 7y
leslieisreading Also Becky Albertalli has a new book coming out that I'm really excited about and sounds like it will also fit in this category. 7y

I'm all for cute YA contemporary this week! This one is about an Iranian American girl who knows she's a lesbian but doesn't know how to come out. It's got a cute F/F friendship to relationship romance coming out story. The characters were cute and friendships relatable. I found it really enjoyable!

Listening to the audio book at my desk and trying not to let anyone see my cry at how beautiful this book is. I'm not saying anything else because spoilers but if you don't read this book you're missing out. 10/10 would recommend.

Despite some weak dialogue and secondary characters, this is a touching and realistically complicated story about falling in love and coming out in high school. It touched on emotional abuse and cultural intersections enough to be complex, but lightly enough for an overall fun and romantic story. I 💜LGBTQI stories, and wish this has been out when I was in high school! Also: my first completed read of 2017 😎🌈📚

First #biblioweekend book down. This was my recommendation from @Liberty and I enjoyed it. It's awkward and sometimes painful but without tons of drama; it felt realistic and especially reminiscent of high school life.

I really enjoyed this! I started it on a 5-hour car ride and got sucked right into Leila's world of NE private school, Iranian-American culture, toxic friendship/crushes, and high school theater. Not perfect, and a bit wrapped up in a bow, I still laughed and cringed and was thoroughly entertained.

Super fun and cute read. It's pretty cliche, but I didn't care cause I'm a sucker for lgbt books. These seriously need to be more popular. Very fluffy, and exactly what I needed at the time I read it. 4 stars!
