Queer: A Graphic History
Queer: A Graphic History | Meg-John Barker
'Queer: A Graphic History Could Totally Change the Way You Think About Sex and Gender' Vice Activist-academic Meg-John Barker and cartoonist Julia Scheele illuminate the histories of queer thought and LGBTQ+ action in this groundbreaking non-fiction graphic novel. From identity politics and gender roles to privilege and exclusion, Queer explores how we came to view sex, gender and sexuality in the ways that we do; how these ideas get tangled up with our culture and our understanding of biology, psychology and sexology; and how these views have been disputed and challenged. Along the way we look at key landmarks which shift our perspective of whats normal Alfred Kinseys view of sexuality as a spectrum, Judith Butlers view of gendered behaviour as a performance, the play Wicked, or moments in Casino Royale when were invited to view James Bond with the kind of desiring gaze usually directed at female bodies in mainstream media. Presented in a brilliantly engaging and witty style, this is a unique portrait of the universe of queer thinking.

A bit more dense than I expected from a graphic history—but that‘s because it‘s a history of queer theory and theorists, rather than of the gay liberation movement like I expected. It was pretty interesting and definitely informative. Queer theory is very complicated and entangled.

The Development and Engagement director at Lambda Literary posted on Instagram that they‘re looking for shelfies! They are sick of using stock images only to crop/zoom and see books with titles relating to extraneous topics. If you have a shelf or stack of exclusively queer books, why not snap a pic and send it in- they‘ll credit your photo as well if you‘d like. Here‘s the link: https://forms.gle/vYNvpddVe684kAhH8

I'm concentrating on reading my library books so I can get them returned and then concentrate on reading my owned TBR books.
This was informative, thoughtful and thought provoking, and I wouldn't mind having it in my personal library.

TieDyeDude I saw this at my library yesterday, but opted to reread Gender Queer. I'll make sure to check this out next time! 2y
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude They're quite different books, Gender Queer being, as you obviously know, a biography, whilst this book is more academic, being an introduction to Queer Theory. Both good in their different ways 🙂 2y

I‘ve signed up for #lmpbc . This is my first time doing a book club or anything like this. I started a group for LGBTQ+ books, if anyone is interested in joining. Signup is over at @suvata ‘s page. 🏳️‍🌈

Reggie I just signed up a minute ago. 1 1/2 years ago we did one of these right before pride in June and it was great. 3 of us were queer and the 4th was straight and we all had good choices and great comments. Looking forward to this 2y
psalva @Reggie glad to have you join in. That sounds like it was a good time. 2y

Really love Barker's collection of non-fiction graphic novels. I look forward to reading Sexuality, another book in the same set. I also fully recommend Webtoon for anyone looking for very casual reading 💕

This graphic novel was an indepth look at Queer Theory and how it seems to discuss and dive into various Social topics surrounding queer culture, activism etc. The title is a little misleading as I thought I was getting a history of what it means to be Queer. Overall, this is a well done and depth look at Queer Theory that makes it accessible to the masses.

A very VERY informative book about Queer Theory but it did feel a bit more like a brain dump than a graphic history 3.5/5 Read as part of the @bookriot #ReadHarderChallenge2021

This was very cool. Super informative, gave me a good overview of queer theory and history, with a lot of research left to do on many topics. I really enjoyed the pictures as well as the humor mixed in. Definitely unique and fun.

I know it‘s 2 days too late for pride month, but in my defense I had this on hold at the library for a couple of weeks. And honestly it‘s never to late to learn about this subject! How is everyone‘s summer going? It‘s 91 degrees here in Chicago today!! 🙀🙀🌞🌞🌈🌈

Still trying to regain some balance with migraine/fatigue cycles, but feeling good enough this afternoon to challenge my brain a little. It‘s tricky; I tend to want to read comics quickly, but I really have to slow down, reread and process new ideas pretty much every page. Makes me wish I had taken any college courses in gender studies or sexuality.⬇️

Mindelan I wanted to get a general broad understanding of queer theory to help me discuss these subjects more readily, and a foundation for future reading, which I think I am getting, but I feel like I could probably get even more out of it with some guidance. Have to start somewhere though, and at least I have an excellent research assistant. 6y
ReceiptsForBookmarks I really liked this book as it provided me with an introduction to key theories and theorists in a highly readable and digestible format. I found a second read meant I took in the information more as there is a lot of info in such a short book! 6y
Mindelan @ReceiptsForBookmarks Glad I‘m not the only one who felt like there was a lot of info! Just finished it and I really liked it too. Definitely going to re-read soon- I think I will take in a lot more now that I have the context of the whole book! 5y

Hi littens! Had a really heavy migraine/fatigue spell at the end of the school year, but I‘m think I‘m starting to get back on my feet with some help from a new preventative. Have been reading a bunch of stuff that I hope to post on, this is one of my #currentlyreading pile to start pride. So far I think it‘s a good overview of the *boatload* of queer history that I definitely did not learn in school. ⬇️

Mindelan Sometimes when there is a 1pg spread on a philosophy or person, I feel like I‘m not able to fully understand the main idea, but as a broad overview/introduction to queer theory, I think it‘s pretty good. Hoping to finish it this week! 6y

So. I get heckin' tired of the ubiquity of hetero-normative and binary assumptions of the culture at large and amongst my friends. Yet LGBTQIA etc. gets to feel like reciting pi. This book wasn't what I thought it was. I expected a graphic exploration of queer experience: it turned out to be an illustrated, text-heavy summary of queer theory. Very academic. Much went over my head as I was reading more quickly than I'd have liked (Overdrive book).

A fun foray back into academia! I'm not really the intended audience for this graphic introduction to queer theory ("history" is a bit of a misnomer) as I've read a fair number of the primary texts by Foucault, Butler, etc. So I doubt myself a bit when I say I think the concepts are clearly explained and that the book is pretty accessible. I especially liked how they addressed the lack of attention to race and bisexuality in most queer theory.

alimabean I think it was pretty well explained! I had a very basic background of queer theory when I read it, but I still found that the new material was easy to understand. 6y

queerbookreader I knew 0% walking into it and I felt like it was helpful for a total beginner. I'm wondering if you know of any other sources where I could read about how queer theory stemmed from black feminist theory? And/or how they are related 6y
queerbookreader Also ya I was way confused when I opened this comic I thought would be on queer history and it was like surprise it's queer theory 101!!!!! A misnomer for sure 6y

A pretty good intro to Queer Theory, I think the authors did their best to make a very complicated subject matter as accessible as they knew how. The illustrations really helped break up the text into more understandable tidbits, as even though each entry was around one page, it did get dense at points.

First of all a little more apt title for the book might be "Queer Theory: A Graphic History". It does cover other things but a examination of queer theory/ theories lies at its heart. If you know this, I think, you get a nice introduction which shys not away from showing contradictions. Some takes in this book l are at least debatable, but the book gives you a lot of starting points for further discussions and readings.
