Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe
Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe: A Novel | Jenny Colgan
17 posts | 18 read | 8 to read
New York Times Bestseller! For fans of Jojo Moyes (Me Before You) and Sophie Kinsella (the Shopaholic series) comes the perfect holiday storya moving, funny, utterly delightful novel about love, loss, and baking. How many times can your life change? Once upon a time, Issy Randall was the girl nobody wanted. But when she opened the Cupcake Caf, her life changedand now Issy is happy, confident, and in love with a wonderful man raising his young brother after the death of their parents. Is life about to change again? With the holidays approaching, cracks show in Issy's perfect world. Her boyfriend Austin has been scouted for a possible move to New York City. Her colleagues at the Cupcake Caf are suffering heartbreak. And as Christmas looms ever closer, Issy finds forced to decide what she holds most dear. From an author whose work Sophie Kinsella describes as 'sheer indulgence', and featuring delicious holiday recipes, Christmas at the Cupcake Caf is a novel that will make you laugh, cry, and long for sugar.

Final book of 2022!
Charming sorry that felt like it got ahead of itself. Izzy, a cupcake cafe owner in London. Austin, upstart banker who gets an offer in New York City. How can they cope? I was expecting a book more upon compromising for the other, but got one of crazy holiday people and a relationship that doesn‘t feel stable. Not enough real-feel romance for this Christmas romance story. The “sacrificing” didn‘t feel right.

In my haphazard sequence of reading of JC books, I‘m back to Issy‘s story. It‘s the same characters as Book 1 which was nice. Maybe I couldn‘t resolve the funds wasted on multiple trans-Atlantic airline tickets or maybe I prefer JC stories snuggled quaintly in a UK setting, but the NYC dilemma didn‘t seem well thought out to me.

I read this back in 2013. If my review on Goodreads is anything to go by, I didn‘t think much of it. Stereotypical characters and implausible plot are the key points of my review. Shame, as I normally quite like Colgan‘s books.

#ChristmasQuotes #Blizzard

“It was barely light at all, with the blizzard and the clouds so close to the ground. People passing by on the main road had their scarves over their mouths and their hats pulled over their eyes, and were leaning into the wind at an angle, grimly set on their destinations. It was an extraordinarily cold storm out there.”

Aww such a cute little christmas story. Love the contrast between New York and London. The plot is cute and simple with an ending as expected for the story. The plot is slow and steady with the clever addition of the other characters adding to the story. A sweet Christmas read. 4*

LibrarianRyan @kezzlou85 Hope she is feeling better. I have about 5 books I need to finish (letter Q picture book, x and z graphic novels, a @mrBook temptation and a listen author.) I can do it, but the boys come tonight so it is going to be hard. I have one audiobook left, but it will not go far. 4y

Day 10 #SeasonsReadings2017 #Twinkle These lights don't twinkle, they just shine and glimmer but they were handy and pretty. Paired with a Christmas book by Jenny Colgate that is on my Kindle. I don't know if I'll get to it this year as I still haven't read the original "Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe" (also loaded on my Kindle) and if you know me at all, you know how I am about reading books in order.??

TricksyTails I am all about the order of books! 6y
Pamwurtzler I like to read in order too! There was another post about these specifically that said they‘d be better if you read them in order. 6y

I think my favourite thing about Colgan's books is how her characters build communities. Nobody stands alone, no matter how peculiar they are, and nobody is completely unsympathetic, no matter how many times they mess up. It delights me, but it also makes for more than a few teary moments as everyone tries to sort themselves out, with plenty of support from those around them.

I also love how this Christmas book acknowledges other winter holidays.

I planned to read some Deep, Meaningful Literature today, but decided to go with more Jenny Colgan instead. The mountains approve of my choice.

I read about 3/4 of the book on my journey, and now I'm ready to tuck up in bed and try to finish it--after I catch up on Litsy, of course!

(Sorry for the blurry pic. The plane was small and bumpy, and the only clear photo I got barely showed the mountains.)

Austin & Izzy where the only characters that interested me. The rest of the characters couldn't hold my attention. Austin's younger brother Darny quickly got on my nerves. First book it was cute after awhile it's just a bratty kid.
Loved the Recipes. Verity Deli Hot Chocolate Brownies look yummy.
I really wish books like this had a recipe index.

Zelma This one sounded cute until you mentioned the bratty kid. Pass! 👍 7y
