Literary Brooklyn
Literary Brooklyn: The Writers of Brooklyn and the Story of American City Life | Evan Hughes
10 posts | 2 read | 12 to read
For the first time, here is Brooklyn's story through the eyes of its greatest storytellers. Like Paris in the twenties or postwar Greenwich Village, Brooklyn today is experiencing an extraordinary cultural boom. In recent years, writers of all stripesfrom Jhumpa Lahiri, Jennifer Egan, and Colson Whitehead to Nicole Krauss and Jonathan Safran Foerhave flocked to its patchwork of distinctive neighborhoods. But as literary critic and journalist Evan Hughes reveals, the rich literary life now flourishing in Brooklyn is part of a larger, fascinating history. With a dynamic mix of literary biography and urban history, Hughes takes us on a tour of Brooklyn past and present and reveals that hiding in Walt Whitman's Fort Greene Park, Hart Crane's Brooklyn Bridge, the raw Williamsburg of Henry Miller's youth, Truman Capote's famed house on Willow Street, and the contested streets of Jonathan Lethem's Boerum Hill is the story of more than a century of life in America's cities. Literary Brooklyn is a prismatic investigation into a rich literary inheritance, but most of all it's a deep look into the beloved borough, a place as diverse and captivating as the people who walk its streets and write its stories.

When your current read mentions a book you have on your shelf and definitely haven‘t read yet. 🖤

mrozzz @Leftcoastzen it‘s really the perfect spot too. Very accessible by multiple train lines and has a huge park protected from traffic. @AmyG It‘s my first time! Can‘t believe I‘d never been before. 6y

When your grandmother, who is 92, gives you a file folder of papers that include her school report cards, diplomas AND this library card gem! Nana was always a voracious reader and she thinks she's cool because she can use her Kindle to read now!!! #luckyashell #Nanisthebest #everyoneneedsaNana

Angitron Wow! This is so cool!! 7y

Wouldn't it be fun to take Lillian Boxfish's walk around Manhattan? Great walks around Brooklyn are featured in this tagged book. I did the one that includes Truman Capote's house when our daughter lived in the neighborhood. So much literary history makes it a fun read, even if it's only a virtual tour. I'd go back in a #NewYorkMinute ! #rockinmay @Cinfhen

Cinfhen What an amazing book! Thanks for posting & sharing 😍😍 8y
Hollie This looks like a book I need!! 8y
lynneamch Absolutely @Hollie whether you live in or visit Brooklyn, or just love learning about these fascinating writers. 8y

#fictionnonfictionpairings Read Thomas Wolfe, Truman Capote, Henry Miller, H.P. Lovecraft, W.E.B. DuBois, myriad other authors who lived in Brooklyn then see their homes with guidance from Literary Brooklyn. Can't get there? It's still a fascinating read. Brooklyn Heights tour can be seen here. http://www.nycgo.com/articles/brooklyn-literary-tour-nyc
