A treat for those facing The Great Waterloo Tangent in our #LesMisBuddyRead. This book was taken from the Tuileries when Napoleon deposed Louis XVIII March 1815. The handwritten notes were made by the French King himself shortly before (see the date 19 January 1815 in the top left). Blücher took it from Napoleon's carriage at Waterloo and gave it to the British liaison Sir Henry Hardinge who presented it to Lady Edgcumbe #RareBooks

UwannaPublishme What a fascinating piece of Waterloo history! So cool 😍🙌🏻 6y
Moray_Reads @UwannaPublishme it's not every day you get to hold a book that has been annotated by a king, travelled with an emperor, looted by a count and inherited by a marquess! 6y
UwannaPublishme Mind blowing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y

The Nursery "Alice". Rare find at an Antiquarian Bookstore. Alice and all of her whimsy have always inspired that magic essence in my own life.

A Book of Good Poems | C. T. (Charles Taylor) Fyfe
post image

This came to mind for both #LostBooks & #RareBooks. I credit this as one of the school textbooks that reignited my love for poetry. I had tracked down a copy after high school, but I lost it in a house fire. It took over 15 years to find another copy! Half the book has notes pencilled in, but that just adds to the charm. #OldCoolBooks

Linsy Whoa, what a story! I love how faithful you were to your book love. 💗💗💗 (edited) 6y

The State Library Of Victoria on the east coast of Australia houses many rare publications. We learnt about some of them while attending a World of the Book tour at the library in October last year.

A page from the lavishly produced Book of Hours c 1480 by the Catholic Church is pictured here.

Rage | Stephen King, Richard Bachman
post image

As far as #rarebooks go Rage by Richard Bachmann definitely qualifies. Stephen King pulled it from publication after the school shootings in the 80s and 90s. Now copies, if you can find them, can go for $500 on Amazon. I found the story in one of the old copies of The Bachman Books: Four Early Novels. Even in newer copies of that Rage is absent.

I own no books that could be called rare, but did you know you can read some of the books in the Library of Congress Rare Books and Special Collections in their online Reading Room? Here's the link to the children's titles available-including this beautiful copy of Beauty and the Beast. Reading online isn't the same, but it's still interesting to look at.

DebinHawaii @Suelizbeth I think he's a pointy-nosed bear thing but he does look rat-like in this picture, 🐻🐭 6y
Suelizbeth @DebinHawaii I thought I saw a long tail. 6y
Austen_Nerd thank you 6y
Victory1 Hello, I'm new here and trying Litsy out for the first time. The animals tail looks possibly braided or twisted. 6y
DebinHawaii @Victory1 Welcome to Litsy!! 🎉📚👍Hope you enjoy it here! @Suelizbeth from looking at the other pictures and a passage about him 'throwing his bear skin' off when he transformed, I'm still leaning to bear and wonder if the tail-looking thing is an unfortunately placed twisted tree root or part of his outfit or something else since it isn't shown in the other couple of illustrations. But I could be wrong! 😆👍 (edited) 6y
Victory1 Thanks DebinHawaii although, I could say, Deb in my favorite state to visit! I'm enjoying my first day looking around Listy and wondering how I didn't see Litsy before, what a perfect site for book people! I vote, twisted tree root, rope or ? 😀👍 6y

Salome | Oscar Wilde
post image

If a #rarebooks genie granted wishes, I‘d ask for the 1st illustrated/translated Salomé. According to ABAA, Wilde would be disappointed in my choice:

“Although Wilde commissioned [Audrey] Beardsley to illustrate his translation of Salome, he was shocked by the end result and felt that the images overpowered his text. Beardsley mocked Wilde in several of the illustrations.”

MAY 12 PROMPT: Rare Books

This 1885 Allegheny Edition of Theodore Roosevelt‘s Hunting Trips of a Ranchman: Sketches of Sport on the Northern Cattle Plains I think qualifies as a rare book. It was originally my great-grandfather‘s, I believe. My grandfather told me his father had hunted with Teddy a time or two, but “a bit of a bigot, he is(Teddy).” Continued 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

ReadZenRites While that‘s not what a kid wants to hear about a US President and one of the “great men” at Mount Rushmore, as an adult I realize he was right. Grandfather also implied that Teddy was not very politic when it came to the rise of the Nazis in Germany, which my grandfather enlisted in the Marines to fight in WWII. History has a very different look as an adult. 😊 6y
