Mehso-so

This book was very engrossing and I liked the communist attitude and the various attitudes regarding religion. It‘s definitely an unflinching look at the lives of child criminals. But I was pretty disturbed throughout by the racism, sexism, and pervasive sexual assault.

Last book of January as there‘s 30 min left & I need to go to sleep & work tomorrow.😵My 2nd book for #FoodandLit #Brazil that I was drawn to when it was called a Brazilian Lord of the Flies. Not quite but interesting, written in 1937, about abandoned boys living on the streets in Salvador, Bahia, in Eastern Brazil. A gang of 100-ish, led by Pedro Bala “Bullet” the MC. Some triggers of violence, racism & sexual assault, but compulsively readable.

Butterfinger Sounds interesting. 3y

Trying to get it in gear for #FoodandLit Brazil this weekend. Popped in for an Acai Bowl at my local coffee shop (& non Brazil-ish Hawaiian Honey Latte).🤷🏻‍♀️Going to make Brazilian Black Bean Soup tomorrow for #SouperSundays. Still reading The Three Marias but trying to fit this one in too.

Song of the moment from my Spotify Brazil FoodandLit playlist is Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars). Nice way to start my Saturday.

Nute @DebinHawaii @BookBudget19 I feel like I should have joined the Litsy Love penpal community by now as well, but I‘m worried that I wouldn‘t be able to keep up with all of that wonderful mail from so many people. I love seeing the letters go back and forth between folks! 3y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I try to respond within a day or two of receiving a letter. Otherwise, it does stack up and become an overwhelming project. 3y
DebinHawaii @Catsandbooks Thanks! It was! 😋 3y

#Aprella Day 16: My time in #Brazil is unforgettable. I delivered a keynote alongside the Deputy Minister of Educ in Finland (lady in yellow) and Deputy Minister of Education in Brazil (lady in white beside me upper left photo) among a group of over 700 educators from whole of Brazil. I also delivered a keynote with the Ayrton Senna Institute among ministers of education in different regions of Brazil in Sao Paolo. Read tagged book on the plane.

#ReadingResolutions Day 27: I was on several #Planes (thankfully on business class, thanks to conference organizers) from Singapore to Dubai, Dubai to Sao Paolo. Total of over 22 hours on the plane, not counting layover. Naturally, I had to read Amado, reputed to be a classic Brazilian novelist. I also managed to finish Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon‘s De: Tales (Stories from Urban Brazil), and Ken Liu‘s Paper Menagerie. Long flights. :)

TrishB The only good thing about them! Although food and drink in business class is good too!! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Nice! I'm glad you had a lot of reading time. 6y
GatheringBooks @TrishB sadly i don‘t drink but the chocolates are heavenly, food exquisite, and the toiletries are designer-labels. the layover in dubai, too, was decadent. was able to take a bath! :) 6y

GatheringBooks @Mdargusch agreed! it truly is! :) 6y
GatheringBooks @Cathythoughts and @RebelReader ordinarily i would join you back in coach, myself - this was just a super sweet deal for two keynote presentations i have done in sao paolo and santa catarina. very generous hosts (ayrton senna institute). :) 6y
