Newbery Honor author Kathryn Lasky's A JOURNEY TO THE NEW WORLD is now back in print with a gorgeous new package! Twelve-year-old Remember Patience Whipple ("Mem" for short) has just arrived in the New World with her parents after a grueling 65-day journey on the MAYFLOWER. Mem has an irrepressible spirit, and leaps headfirst into life in her new home. Despite harsh conditions, Mem is fearless. She helps to care for the sick and wants more than anything to meet and befriend a Native American.

This HF, LC book would be a wonderful story to read with small groups. This book touches on the story of the Mayflower and New World through the eyes of a fictional protagonist. Students can learn about the life and struggles of the new settlers in North America through diary entries of a young girl. #UCFLAE3414SP21

This great resource from scholastic includes a discussion guide that can be used in your LC. the UDL Principle 8.1 about setting goals and objectives will help to facilitate a successful LC. The ESOL strategy 22 about providing ELs with extra time to answer questions will allow them to effectively engage in a LC discussion.

Continuing to help out in the library and was blasted by nostalgia when I got to this series on the shelves. I LOVED these when I was a kid! Did anyone else read these? I couldn‘t even tell you which ones I have read, I just remember they had the little ribbon and pseudo old paper to make them feel like authentic diaries. #nostalgia #middlegradelit #historicalfiction #viloniareads #vhsreads

BennettBookworm I remember these so vividly, too! 6y

@BethM here are the ones I have so far. 😊 The bottom two that are somewhat cut off are (Left) So Far From Home: Mary Driscoll and (Right) A Journey to the New World: Remember Patience Whipple. Thank you for keeping an eye out for me! I still have to send off a goodie thank you package to a couple of people that have donated some, but I will add one for you as well ❤️ We are in the middle of moving so life has been a bit hectic 😬

freyaheart I remember these!! 8y
Chelsibno So jealous! I loved this series as a kid and read all the ones my school and public library had in their collections. I still have a some on my bookshelf. Wish I had more though. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @freyaheart I still haven't read all of them, but the ones I did read always stuck with me! @Chelsibno I have been lucky because a few Littens and Bookstagrammers sent me some, I started with 5, and another Litten showed me an online site that has them as well 😊 8y

BooksTeasAndBookishThings @BethM Add two more I just got an email from my Mom that she found these two: I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly: Patsy a Freed Girl; Hear My Sorrow: Angela Denoto a Shirtwaist Worker. (edited) 8y
Chelsibno @BooksTeasAndBookishThings That's amazing! I love how generous and helpful the Litsy community is. Right now, I own seven: A Journey to the New World, I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly, A Picture of Freedom, Color Me Dark, Standing in the Light, Voyage on the Great Titanic, and Westward Home. I also own three of the TV series episodes on VHS, a gift from my 5th grade teacher for working hard to improve my math skills. 8y
Chelsibno @BooksTeasAndBookishThings Oh! I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly was the first one I ever read! It instantly got me hooked on the series. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Chelsibno That is awesome!!! And I agree, I still remember one line that made me laugh so hard as a kid from that one. When she said, "My wits aren't half as dim as hers" lol I have no idea why I thought that was so funny back then but... definitely one of my faves! 8y
Chelsibno @BooksTeasAndBookishThings Lol! I remember reading some real zingers in that book as a kid and thinking "ooooh buuuuuurn!" each time I came across a really good one. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Chelsibno exactly! I love how quick she was 😂 8y
Chelsibno @BooksTeasAndBookishThings Looking back, my favorite protagonists in this series were always the quick-witted and sassy ones. There's just something endearing about a young girl or woman who is intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind or point out when others are wrong or acting like fools. I think that's what pulled me to this series as a kid. So many of these books had female protagonists who were unashamedly smart and quick-witted. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Chelsibno exactly! And teaches girls reading these it is okay and all about history in the process ❤️ 8y
raelaschoenherr I loved the royals ones too! 8y
ashley_liz I read a few of these books when I was a kid! I was partial to the Dear Canada books though. 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @raelaschoenherr I only read two, but now I have two more to read 🙌 @ashley_liz I didn't even know they had U.K., Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand ones! Until I started looking into them. 8y
ashley_liz @BooksTeasAndBookishThings I loved the Canadian ones! I recently picked up about five used ones just because I wanted to add them to my collection! There was one about the Halifax Explosion that always impacted me as a kid! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @ashley_liz that sounds amazing! Maybe when I collect all of these I will start globally lol 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @ashley_liz sweet! I will definitely do that! ❤️ Thank You! 8y
Jinjer Wow! Never heard of the series! 8y
8leagueboot This is a photograph of my childhood 🤗 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Jinjer They were some of my first loves ❤️ It made me even more fascinated with history and made me love memoir/diary type reads. I read Anne Frank very young because I was so in love with this format. They really are great for kids 😊 @8leagueboot Right??? So many memories ❤️ 8y
Reviewsbylola I am so envious of your collection! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Reviewsbylola Thriftbooks.com has a lot of them for very cheap! A Litten exposed me to that and you get to choose the condition of the book if they have them ❤️ 8y
Reviewsbylola Yes, I try to always add one or two on when I make an order. I have been slowly collecting them for when my daughter's are older. I hope they love the series as much as I did! 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Reviewsbylola omg are you the one that told me about Thriftbooks? I couldn't remember for the life of me lol Yes! I am so ready for Kaysen to be old enough to read these 😍 8y
Reviewsbylola Idk, it's possible! If so, you're welcome. 😂 8y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @Reviewsbylola haha yes! Thank you ❤️ I was going to go back in my posts to see if I could find the one with the link. 8y
Emily92Bibliophile Oh my goodness I LOVE the dear America and Royal Diaries!!! When I was 8 they were 2 out of 5 series that got me hooked on reading and not despising reading - I grew up with a fascination of all things historical and these were a gold mine to me! Now as I librarian I highly recommend them to any young reader who loves learning about historical figures or interested in America's history. 8y
CrowCAH WOW AWESOME COLLECTION!!! So happy for you, it's looking great! 😍 8y
